| HISTORY OF AUB

1863 Dr. Daniel Bliss
obtains a charter from the State of New York for the Syrian Protestant
College and begins raising funds from private sources in England and the
United States.
1866 The first class enters on December 3. The Faculty of Arts and
Sciences is established.
1867 The Faculty of Medicine and AUBMC, then known as the American
University Hospital, is founded.
1871 The cornerstone for College Hall is laid.
1905 The School of Nursing is established.
1920 The Syrian Protestant College is renamed the American University of
Beirut.
1924 The University becomes completely co-educational.
1945 Nineteen former AUB students are delegates to the signing of the
United Nations Charter.
1950 The School of Agriculture is established; renamed the Faculty of
Agricultural and Food Sciences in 1979.
1951 The School of Engineering is founded; renamed the Faculty of
Engineering and Architecture in 1966.
1954 The School of Public Health is established; renamed the Faculty
of Health Sciences in 1978.
1970 AUBMC relocates to a new facility.
1975 Protracted civil strife in Lebanon begins. AUB remains open
throughout the duration of the civil war.
1989 The Lebanese civil war ends.
1991 AUB commits to rebuilding College Hall after it is destroyed by a
bomb.
1998 Dr. John Waterbury becomes the first president to reside on campus
since 1985.
1999 College Hall reopens, having been restored and modernized through
gifts from alumni and friends worldwide.
2000 AUB establishes its sixth academic faculty, the School of Business.
2003 The Board of Trustees passes a resolution on June 20 naming its
sixth faculty the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business in honor of the
late AUB trustee and friend, Suliman S. Olayan.
