Digital and Media Literacy: New Directions

• When should I arrive and leave?

To take full advantage of the pre- and post-conference activities, especially the excursions and workshops, we recommend you arrive early Thursday Oct 27, the latest, and leave late night on Tuesday November 1, the earliest. You are welcome to come earlier and stay later, of course.  Fall is lovely in Lebanon. There is mild weather, it is the off-tourism season, and it is less crowded as well as it is less expensive.

• Who is the conference for?

The conference targets media researchers, scholars, experts, professionals and advanced graduate students interested in presenting at AUSACE 2011. It also aims to include top executives in the media industry.

• Do I need to be a member of AUSACE to submit a proposal?

No. Any media scholar, professional, student, or activist can submit a proposal without being a current member of AUSACE. You can also participate in the conference without presenting. If the proposal is accepted, individuals will need to register and pay the conference registration fee before the registration deadline. The registration fee includes a full year membership in AUSACE.  

• What is the typical weather in Lebanon around the end of October?

Fall in Lebanon is mild and the warm summer often extends well into November. Last year, tourists were still going to the beach in mid November. You can expect temperatures during the day between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius (68 to 85 F) in Beirut and 15 to 25 C (60 to 75 F) in the mountains with lots of sunshine and intermittent rain. It gets colder by around 5-10 degrees C at night, and even a bit colder in the mountains. Skiing season usually does not begin until December; so, don’t count on skiing in October. Bring at least one piece of mild winter clothing in case you venture into the mountains, but otherwise warm fall attire should suffice. Definitely bring swimming attire. The Mediterranean remains warm most of the year and AUB is right on the beach facing the beautiful Manara Corniche, where you can walk, jog, or bike.  

• How can I make sure I get updated information about the conference?

• Can I volunteer to work at the conference?

Yes, we will be recruiting volunteers. We’ll post more information as it becomes available. AUB students are especially welcome.

• How many papers may I propose?

You may propose up to three papers for the conference.

• May I serve as chair for more than one panel?

Yes. You are welcome to suggest chairing as many panels as you like, subject to the approval of the conference organizers.

• What if someone has to drop off my panel after I submitted it or after it was accepted? Can I substitute another presenter and paper?

No. All proposals must go through the review procedure. You cannot substitute someone at a later point. It is useful to have a full complement of four presenters on panels so that if an individual does have to drop out you will still have a panel of three. We will not allow under any circumstances non-authors to present any paper.

• What kind of facilities should I expect?

AUB conference rooms are fully equipped with modern audio-visual equipment, including projectors and sound systems. Internet access is limited, but available if you request it in advance. If you have any special request, please e-mail us the soonest.
