You, and in specific situations your family, have the right to initiate and be involved in the discussion of ethical issues surrounding your care. The Medical Center Ethics Committee (MCEC) can assist you through the process of making difficult decisions.
The MCEC is composed of members of the American University of Beirut, including physicians, nurses, administration, a social worker, a philosopher, a lawyer, and a clinical bioethicist. It meets regularly on a monthly basis, but is available to assemble when needed for urgent consultations.
Requests for ethics consultations should be submitted through the attending physician or the treating team. Alternatively, requests may be sent directly to the Chief of Staff, the Chair/Vice Chair of the MCEC, or the clinical bioethicist. This may be done by paging either one of them or by sending an email if the case is not urgent.
