- Research Ethics Talk at International College (November 4, 2010)
On November 4, 2010 Dr. Thalia Arawi, founding director of the SHBPP gave an interactive presentation to students of the 4th College Preparatory Program at the International College, Ras Beirut Middle School about the importance of Research Ethics. If you wake up one day and discover that you were paralyzed from the neck down, what would you do in order to walk up again? All students agreed that they would do ANYTHING. By the end of the session, students changed their mind: There are certain things they would not do. Research, they understood, have certain guidelines and regulations that ought not to be transgressed. They learned about the history of research abuses, the rise of research ethics, the role of Institutional Review Boards, the rights of research participants and the face that research ethics applies too in the case of animals. Most importantly, they agreed with Einstein that “many people say it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character.”
