  • Research Ethics Talk at International College (November 4, 2010)
On November 4, 2010 Dr. Thalia Arawi, founding director of the SHBPP gave an interactive presentation to students of the 4th College Preparatory Program at the International College, Ras Beirut Middle School about the importance of Research Ethics. If you wake up one day and discover that you were paralyzed from the neck down, what would you do in order to walk up again? All students agreed that they would do ANYTHING. By the end of the session, students changed their mind: There are certain things they would not do. Research, they understood, have certain guidelines and regulations that ought not to be transgressed. They learned about the history of research abuses, the rise of research ethics, the role of Institutional Review Boards, the rights of research participants and the face that research ethics applies too in the case of animals. Most importantly, they agreed with Einstein that “many people say it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character.”

  • Director of SHBPP at AUB FM Holds a Workshop on the Teaching of Biomedical Ethics at the University of Damascus (August 5, 2010)
Towards the end of the workshop, the following recommendations ensued:
    • Participants unanimously agreed that there is a need to promote the teaching of medical ethics to students of medicine and that this needs to be more emphasized during the clinical years than during the basic sciences years.
    • It was agreed that medical ethics is an interdisciplinary field and that professors from different disciplines will be involved in teaching. For that purpose, a number of workshops and training sessions will be held.
    • The possibility of creating an online biomedical ethics discussions forum between students and professors was also raised. The possibility of holding such forums between the medical students of Damascus University and the American University of Beirut was also discussed

  • White Coat Ceremony (June 15, 2008)
The ceremony and oath of dedication to the care of patients is a reminder to students of the commitment needed to complete their medical education as well as the responsibilities that come with the profession of medicine. The AUB FM White Coat Ceremony the class of 2010 was held in Issam Fares Hall, reminding students that the white coat is not a sign that they have arrived, but that they have begun the journey that will last the rest of their lives.
Parents and faculty members attended the ceremony which was followed by a reception.

This White Coat Ceremony was supported, for the first time, by a grant from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, a foundation committed to promoting humanism in medicine.
