Research

In recent years, research has become increasingly important at AUB, where it is encouraged, supported, and rewarded through the advancement of faculty in professorial rank and the graduate degrees earned by Master’s and PhD students. Research energizes the University’s intellectual environment and helps it to attract and retain outstanding faculty who involve promising students in their discoveries.

The Provost’s Office is constantly seeking ways to advance the research agendas of faculty and to increase scientific knowledge in support of the region’s social and economic development. Internal research funding has increased steadily in recent years as have the external grants obtained by faculty with the assistance of the Office of Grants and Contracts, which is one of the provost’s direct reports. AUB is currently home to about fifteen major research centers and institutes that focus the critical mass of expertise and resources needed to address complex research problems and the rapidly changing needs of Arab societies.

The University has ambitious plans that will give new momentum to interdisciplinary approaches to research that foster innovation. One of its goals is to increase the number of interdisciplinary graduate programs in targeted fields of study to ensure that AUB students are ready to face the challenges of the twenty-first century.

“With the reintroduction of PhD programs in eight selected disciplines, AUB has become the only US-accredited university in the Arab world to offer doctoral degrees. The decision to reinstate the PhD after a 20-year hiatus is a measured step in AUB’s transition to a doctoral/research university – a gradual process that will build on our most recent accomplishments and our competitive advantages in relation to peer institutions in the region. It positions AUB as a full-service university and, thus, a necessary reference point for excellence in education, research, and health care in the Middle East.”

A Decade of Research and

Writing: AUB Book Exhibition

The Provost's Office, in coordination with University Libraries, celebrated a decade of research and writing by AUB faculty with the launch of a book exhibition on Thursday, June 23, 2011. The launch included publication of a booklet entitled, A Decade of Research and Writing: AUB Book Exhibition, which describes these scholarly publications, provides the authors' biographies, and quotes from selected reviews. We invite you to browse through the booklet to learn how AUB faculty contribute to the creation and dissemination of knowledge.
