Student Housing Opportunities 

Residents living in the dorms have two major work opportunities:


1. Resident Assistant (RA)

Task

The job of an RA involves a number of functions which aim at maintaining a healthy atmosphere in the Residence Halls.

Term

Though the RA's are appointed for a period of one year, their performance is evaluated at the end of each semester. The evaluation will determine whether the contract with an RA will be renewed or not. The contract may be terminated at any point throughout the semester if the RA is found to be negligent in his/her duties.

Eligibility

For a student to be eligible to apply for the RA position, he/she must be a full-time student in good academic standing and who has spent at least one semester in any of the Residence Halls. A candidate in good standing is defined as one who has enrolled and paid the tuition fees, is not on academic probation or has received a Dean's warning for non-academic violations of the student code of conduct.

How and when to apply?

Pay attention to the RA vacancy announcements posted in each dorm and most importantly the deadline. An application form must be filled out and submitted at the Student Housing Office in West Hall, Room 112. Interviews are usually held starting the first week of May.

2. Monitor

Task

The student Monitor will work as a receptionist in the Residence Halls. You will answer the phone, take messages, answer queries, and the like. Also, you are expected to monitor the entrance area, the balconies and the lounge to make sure no violations are being committed. Monitors work during the day, at night, and during the weekends.

Eligibility

For a student to be considered eligible to apply for the Monitor's position, he/she must be a full-time student in good academic standing. A candidate in good standing is defined as one who has enrolled and paid the tuition fees, is not on academic probation or has received a Dean's warning for non-academic violations of the student code of conduct. This job is open to dorm residents only.

How and when to apply?

Please contact the Head Resident during the first week of the semester to find out about vacancies. Once you secure the approval of the Head Resident, you should submit an application through the Work Study Program at AUB.

Student Monitors Code of Conduct

As a Monitor, you are expected to:

  • Be punctual and observe your work schedule at all times.

  • Never leave the reception desk unattended. Arrange for coverage at least 24 hours in advance in cases where you cannot cover your hours. Only an RA or fellow student Monitor may cover your absence.

  • Answer the phone politely and in a calm manner.

  • Offer to leave a message if the resident is unavailable to take the call or receive the guest. Leave accurate messages including the date, time, your name and the message text.

  • Make sure that the residents' guests are not violating the dorm regulations or behaving in a manner considered inappropriate.

  • Pay attention to the guests coming in and out of the building.

  • Keep the reception desk neat.

  • Invite the guests to wait for their host/s in the lounge area.

  • Make sure that no disturbance is coming from the lounge or the balconies.

  • Report irregularities to the Head Resident, RA's, or Coordinator of Student Housing.

Make sure that no residents or guests are smoking in the lounge or public areas under your supervision. Report violators to the Head Resident or RA's.

Also as a monitor, you must refrain from:

  • Eating at the reception desk.

  • Using the phone for personal calls.

  • Disclosing private  information.

  • Students found to be violating the above code will be subject to measures which may include termination of contract along with further disciplinary measures. Always consult your Head Resident or RA if you have questions.
