Our Commitment To Energy Conservation at The AUB
AUB, as any other organization, has seen its energy costs rise in the last few years. Although, we continue to identify energy conservation opportunities around campus, our energy costs are expected to increase due to rising fuel cost and the introduction of new facilities to our inventory. Our present utility budget, including water and telephone, has exceeded $8 million.

To help reduce our energy consumptions, PPD has identified and implemented the following Energy Conservation Measures (ECM):
- Replacement of single pane windows with double pane glass for sound attenuation and energy conservation
- Replacement of incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent ones
- Replacement of light fixtures with magnetic ballast to higher efficiency fixtures
- The use of infrared occupancy sensors to turn lights ON/OFF automatically
- The use of light sensors to dim lights when the sun is plentiful
- Setting of campus buildings temperature at 76 F (24 C) and 86 F (30 C) during summer occupied and unoccupied periods, respectively
- Setting of campus buildings temperature at 70 F (21 C) and 60 F (15 C) during winter occupied and unoccupied periods, respectively
- Replacement of low efficiency equipment with new high efficiency ones such as motors, air-conditioning equipment, electrical transformers, heating boilers, etc.
- Installing aerating, low-flow faucets and showerheads to reduce water consumption
You can also make a difference and assist in lowering energy consumption in your area by turning off lights, computers and equipment when not in use.
Energy conservation benefits are many and go beyond the AUB; at a Micro Level:
- Our present power and steam infrastructure will not need to be expanded or increased
- Allows us to shift saved funds to academic activities such as research or towards improvements of campus life
- May avoid tuition fee increases
at a Macro Level
- Sustain our planet for next generations
- Cleaner air to breath
- Invest in initiatives that can benefit our society
Champion energy conservation initiatives and help us raise awareness in your department or within your group. For more information check
