REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS TO THE POSTGRADUATE ORTHODONTIC PROGRAM AT THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF BEIRUT
1-COMPREHENSIVE PRACTICAL EXAM July 29-31,2008
Weight of exam: 60%
A-Wire Bending-July 29
The applicant will be given wires of different sizes (round & rectangular) & asked to bend the wires according to real size drawings, as well as archwires of maxillary or mandibular arches.
B-Case Presentation-July 30-31
The applicant will be given records of patient(s) including dental casts & x-rays (panoramic and cephalometrics), & asked questions on
-diagnosis of malocclusion & need for treatment
-cephalometric landmarks & interpretation including the possibility of tracing the x-ray(s)
-dental cast (space)analysis
General comprehension questions also are asked.
C-General questions on multidisciplinary treatment & patient management may be asked-coordination of treatment with other specialists [periodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, etc.], behavior management of patients, etc.
2- Written examination- July 31, 2008
Weight of WRITTEN EXAM:40%
The orthodontic questions are(mostly)multiple choice on topics usually covered in predoctoral education at dental schools, including growth & development of:body, craniofacial complex, & dentition; classification & etiology of malocclusion; orthodontic treatment planning; biology/mechanics of tooth movement; orthodontic techniques & stages of treatment; retention of orthod. results; early orthod. treatment of occlusal problems (sagittal,transverse,vertical) & dental arch problems (space maintenance, space gaining, guidance in alignment & occlusion); management of oral habits; removable appliances; functional appliances; dental vs orthopedic movement; considerations in orthod. treatment of adults; combined surgical and orthodontic treatment; TMJ considerations in orthodontic treatment; diagnosis & treatment of craniofacial anomalies. General questions on periodontics, occlusion, & other disciplines pertinent to the evaluation of a dentist's knowledge base may be asked.
Important information
An English examination, tailored after the TOEFL format, is given to help establish the candidate's need for more studies in English-required for proper communication skills. This examination will not count towards acceptance. However, TOEFL, EEE, or IELTS scores will be required for the Master's studies.

Contemporary Orthodontics, William R. Proffit and Henry W. Fields, Jr., 3rd or 4th edition (2000-2005), Mosby Inc.
Material needed for comprehensive exam:
-pliers for bending round and rectangular wires, including light wire pliers, bird beak (#139) pliers, cutting pliers, and other as the applicant may deem necessary
-material to trace cephalometric x-rays and measure distances and angles
-calipers to measure dental casts
