Message from: VP for Development and External Relations

August 4, 2006

Dear AUB faculty and staff,

Many of you are involved in some of the initiatives that AUB has launched in recent weeks to help Lebanon and its people cope with the effects of the war.  In addition to volunteering your time and skills to provide assistance to some of the hundreds of thousands of people who have been displaced by the war, some of our faculty and staff members and their families participated in a campaign to clean up Bliss Street on Thursday, July 27.

AUB has recently established and is seeking funds for the AUB Medical Emergency Fund to help pay for the care that we are currently providing-and expect to be providing for some time.  Faculty and staff members from several AUB faculties are involved in the University's efforts to provide a comprehensive approach to care that includes evaluation of environmental and individual status, education, support, screening, prevention, and-when required-early diagnosis and treatment. Check the most recent photos about some of the volunteer efforts: www.aub.edu.lb/challenge/gallery/

If you want to make a financial donation to support these efforts, you can do so online by going to the following link http://www.aub.edu.lb/php/media/give where you can make a direct salary donation from your August salary. You can also drop off a check payable to the AUB Medical Emergency Fund at the Development Office on the third floor of College Hall.  If you are interested in volunteering, please email: famed@aub.edu.lb

I am reminded, particularly at times like this, that our mission statement describes AUB as an institution founded "to serve the peoples of the Middle East and beyond." Although the people associated with this institution-its students, its faculty, its staff, and their families-do this every day, the need and appreciation for our skills and experience is particularly great in times like this.

Thank you

W. Stephen Jeffrey
Vice President for Development and External Relations
