Faculty Profile: Marc Bassim

Ear specialist Dr. Marc Bassim joined AUBMC in September with the purpose of “giving back to the community.” As assistant professor of clinical otolaryngology, “head and neck surgery,” Bassim says that lots of people have ear problems in Lebanon and sees the need for developing a Balance Center at AUBMC, to be the largest comprehensive center and the first of its kind in the area,” claimed Bassim.

Coming from a family of doctors, Bassim obtained his degrees from AUB—BS, 1997 and MD with distinction in 2001. He then did research for one year at the Hearing Research Laboratories at Duke University before completing his internship in general surgery, followed by a residency in otolaryngology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he stayed until 2007. Between 2007 and 2009, Bassim pursued a fellowship in otology-neurotology (comprehensive study of the ear) at the House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles.

Throughout his studies at AUB, Bassim earned places on the Dean’s Honor List, elected to the AUB chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as a junior, and received the Penrose Award and the Naji Sahyoun Memorial Award upon graduating. Now back at his alma mater, Dr. Bassim is teaching Med IV students, instructing residents, and giving lectures, in addition to conducting his clinical practice.

Over the last few years, Dr. Bassim has been academically active—producing over 18 publications in peer-reviewed journals and several talks at international conferences. His research interests include all diseases of the ear, dizziness, and hearing loss and its correction via different implantable prostheses. Bassim sees many opportunities for exciting research in ENT [ear, nose, and throat], and says patients should become more aware of possible available cures.

Away from work, Bassim enjoys time with his wife and two children. He reads mostly history and philosophy, and whenever possible goes hiking and biking. A swimmer and a skier, he also enjoys listening to classical music, French varieties, and hip-hop, believing that people should always “keep all options open and relax, take a step back and enjoy life.”
