Faculty Profile: Marjaneh Fooladi

Full-time professor at the Florida State University, College of Nursing Marjaneh Fooladi has joined the Hariri School of Nursing for ten months as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar.

Fooladi comes with a long list of achievements, including specialties in two areas of nursing—women's health and family health.

Shortly after receiving her BSN in 1973 from Isfahan University in Iran, she met her husband, leaving with him to the United States. Between 1975 and 1996 she took post-graduate courses and completed her graduate and post-graduate degrees, before earning her PhD in 2000.

Published in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and monographs, Fooladi’s wide-ranging research includes studies on gender influences on nursing, barriers to breastfeeding among black American women, therapeutic effects of tears and the endocrinology of postpartum blues. Previous research work has also included smoking cessation among college students.

Fooladi serves on the editorial board of directors for numerous international nursing journals and has been the leader of two large research projects.

At AUB, she has been giving lectures, writing research grant proposals, attending charitable clinical practice sites and assisting with developing the nursing program and improving its curriculum.

Fooladi was one of six nurse practitioners in the United States to be awarded by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals for her "exceptional contributions" to US health care. She is also the founder and president of World Wide Nursing Service Network (WWNSN), which provides global professional leadership and training.

An avid bird-watcher, who studies birds “even when pregnant and in their post-partum periods,” Fooladi is also fascinated by the “power behind the planets and stars, orchestrating the wondrous order of our dynamic universe.”
Such wonder, fueled by strong faith and an ability to connect with a higher force, encourages Fooladi to read about God and nature, in any religion. She admires the Dalai Lama and likes to explore his ideas through his books.

Bicultural and multi-lingual, Fooladi enjoys listening to the traditional music of other cultures; she also loves classical music, enjoys gardening and sewing, and meditates for “40 minutes at the dawn of every day.”

A keen, creative prose and poetry writer, Fooladi describes words as “powerful, carrying great significance.”

Her professional contributions aside, Fooladi considers being a “proud mother of two married sons and a grandmother of two beautiful grand-daughters” to be among her grandest accomplishments. She sums up her life’s defining wisdom with this advice: “Always be true to yourself; for there is greatness in you.”
