Faculty Profile: Rabih Jabr

Rabih Jabr, associate professor joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in mid-September. After several years at Notre Dame University (NDU), Jabr is happy to return to his alma mater to continue his academic journey of teaching and research.

Jabr received his BE in electrical engineering with high distinction from AUB in 1997, before leaving for England for specialization. With a thesis focused on the development of novel optimization methodologies for the economic operation of power systems, Jabr received his PhD at the London Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine in 2000.

Jabr then had the opportunity to work in the United Kingdom, but his love for family and country brought him back to Lebanon in 2000 to serve in the army for one year. He worked at Notre Dame University as assistant professor in the Electrical, Computer, and Communication Engineering Department until 2007, then as associate professor until 2009. He also served as the department chair at NDU from 2006 to 2009.

His classes at NDU included introductory courses in power systems, power electronics, electric machines, and circuit analysis. At AUB, he is instructing third-year students in electronics, electric machines, and power fundamentals. He feels that “the [AUB] selection criteria are good,” as AUB students generally have solid educational backgrounds.

Extensively published in the subject, with 34 papers in distinguished journals to his credit, Jabr is a specialist in the field of power systems optimization. He is a member of the international editorial boards of two journals: IET-GTD and Electric Power Components and Systems. His research interests are focused on mathematical optimization techniques, power system analysis and computing, and electric power applications. Currently he is working on a method for optimizing the unit commitment solution to power generation.

Jabr is the recipient of three academic awards, including the prestigious Sebastien De Ferranti Premium, awarded by the UK Institution of Electric Engineers for his best 2003 paper. Jabr is married with a fourteen-month-old baby girl, and in spite of his busy schedule, he still finds time to relax by “reading stories about the lives of scientists.”
