• Christian Science Monitor of April 1 reported on the recent protests taking place in Syria against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime. AUB professor of political studies Ahmad Moussalli said, “A new regime in Syria will definitely have an effect [on the region], but it depends on the nature of the new regime.”

• Sydney Morning Herald and Brisbane Times of April 8 published an article on the effect of Al-Jazeera on its audience, namely the role it played in the recent uprisings in the Middle East. AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan said, “Al-Jazeera didn’t start the Arab revolutions that have swept the region, but it has played a critical role in advertising the unrest, and promoting and accelerating the process of change … Al-Jazeera has broken down the walls of fear and silence that have existed within many Arab countries.”

• Newsday of April 10 reported that Kenyan Afro-jazz musician and renowned performance poetry artist Asali will perform at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa). The paper said that according to Wikipedia, Asali was born in Jerusalem and studied at the American University of Beirut.

• EurekAlert and PhysOrg.com of April 7 and Medical News Today of April 8 reported that the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has named Youssef Hannun, professor and department chair at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, the winner of the Avanti Award in Lipids. The paper said that Hannun has a BS and MD from the American University of Beirut.
