• People’s Daily Online of August 3 reported on the recent clashes between the Lebanese and Israeli armies in southern Lebanon. It quoted AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan as saying, “The Lebanese believe the incident was initiated by Israel and was premeditated.”

• The Washington Post of August 5 published an article featuring Lebanese-based Palestinian rappers. It quoted Angie Nassar, a contributing reporter to popular website Now Lebanon, who is writing her master's thesis at the American University of Beirut on Arabic hip-hop, as saying, “It's a very powerful thing when you don't have a voice in this country to say, 'No, we do live here. We may live in the margins, but we do exist.'”

• Campus Watch of August 6 and An-Nahar of August 9 published an article featuring American junior year students choosing to spend their year abroad at universities in the Middle East. The paper gave the example of Anna Khandros who spent a semester at the American University of Beirut.

• Palo Alto Online of August 13 reported on the death of Ara Vahan Dumanian at the age of 81 on August 5. The paper said that Dumanian enrolled at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon in 1949 and graduated in 1953 with a medical degree. He the immigrated to the United States and began his internship and residency as a surgeon in Chicago.

• Newzglobe of August 15 reported that nearly half of Arab students think the Middle East is very flexible with Internet usage citing a survey by the American University of Beirut, which found that Arab students think web censorship should be buffed up.

• The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of August 18 posted a brief audio interview with Imad B. Baalbaki, assistant vice president for development at the American University of Beirut, in which he described how AUB raised $1 million when Lebanon was at war.

• Seattle Times, War in Iraq, Chicago Tribune, and Stamford Advocate of August 22 and The Hampton Roads Daily Press of August 23 published an article on the recent controversy in the U.S. about the building of a mosque next to ground zero in New York City. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Ahmad Mousalli as saying, “The United States has historically been distinguished by its tolerance, whereas Europe, France, Belgium and Holland have been among those who have rejected the symbolism of Islam. Embracing it [building the mosque] will be positively viewed in the Islamic world.”

• Contra Costa Times of August 22 published an article featuring long-time operating room nurse, Arpee Jones of Vallejo, who has “poured her creativity, skill and attention into making quilts.” The paper said that she was born of Armenian parents, and attended high school in Beirut and nursing school at the American University of Beirut.

• The Huffington Post of August 23 published an article on Lebanon’s thriving art scene. The paper gave the example of Mirene Arsanios who opened a tiny project space with her cousin Marwa in 2007. She studied at Goldsmiths and teaches art at the American University of Beirut.

• The Northern Echo of August 24 reported that Lebanese George al-Ojeili won a framed Newcastle United football shirt, signed by the club’s Coca Cola Championship winning team after signing up to Northern Rock’s dedicated fan site, “Sign the Stripes”. The paper said that al-Ojeili recently graduated with a degree in economics from the American University of Beirut.
