  • The Media Line and All Headline News of July 4 reported on a recent attack by villagers in southern Lebanon against United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) soldiers. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan, as saying that “the attacks, launched in areas heavily dominated by Hizbullah, were in response to the recently beefed up U.N. sanctions on Iran.”

  • The Boston Globe of July 3 and The Boston Globe Blogs of July 4 published an article by Sam Haselby, entitled, “The Legend of the Founding Fathers.” The paper said that this year, Haselby, a historian at Harvard University, will be a visiting faculty member at the Center for American Studies and Research at the American University of Beirut.

  • Journal of Clinical Oncology of July 6 published a research paper co-authored by AUBMC professor Ali Bazarbachi, entitled, “Meta-Analysis on the Use of Zidovudine and Interferon-Alfa in Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma Showing Improved Survival in the Leukemic Subtypes.”

  • Actualidas Noticias and U TV of July 6 reported on the funeral services of Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Ahmad Moussalli as saying that “Fadlallah was the spiritual authority for Hizbullah, but in reality Hizbullah report to Iran, and Fadlallah, though he agreed with the principles of the Iranian revolution, became an opponent of the Iranian political system.”

  •  Wachovia of July 11 reported that a workshop on bolstering sustainable agriculture in the Arab region was launched at the Rida Said Conference Center. The event was organized by the Faculty of Agriculture at Damascus University in cooperation with Germany's Brandenburg Technical University (BTU Cottbus) and Weihenstephan University of Applied Science. The paper said that the conference included participants from the American University of Beirut.

Abdelnour, a Wall Street banker who “is a deal maker, trader and financier with over 20 year experience in merchant banking, private equity, alternative investments and physical commodities trading.” The paper said that Abdelnour has a BS in Economics from the American University of Beirut.

  • Ekklesia of July 16 published an article about the recent calls for giving Palestinian refugees in Lebanon civil rights. The paper said that American University of Beirut sociologist and Palestinian activist Sari Hanafi “pointed out that whilst Palestinian refugees in Lebanon used to be banned from 77 job categories until 2005, Labor Minister Trad Hamadeh had issued a decree that same year which officially brought the restrictions imposed on Palestinian employment down to 25 categories. However, this decision was not dovetailed by practical mechanisms for implementation.”

  • The Los Angeles Times of July 15 published an article on the question of banning of the niqab in Syrian public schools and quoted professor of political studies at the American University of Beirut, Ahmad Moussalli, as saying, “If people sense that this is a step that will lead to more repressive action by the state against other religious symbolism there may be a backlash, but this act on its own will not lead to a massive reaction.”

  • Bianet of July 20 published an article featuring the problems Lebanese youth face and cited a study at the American University of Beirut in 1998. It found that “nearly 89 percent of the students behave in such a way as to put their health in danger; the most common behavior: unhealthy diets, smoking and alcohol consumption. Moreover, car and traffic accidents are one of the major problems of public health in Lebanon. Above all, they concern youth.”

  • Voice of America of July 21 reported that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has reportedly issued a fatwah demanding that people obey him as the earthly deputy of both the Prophet Muhammad and Shi'ism's mysterious 12th Imam. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan as saying that “Ayatollah Khamenei rules Iran under the Wilayat al Faqih principle, which does give him broad powers to represent Shi'ism's Hidden or 12th Imam.”

  • World Bulletin of July 22 published a political editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, entitled, “Feeding the Prisoner, Paying the Jailor.” He argued that “the United States wants to fund political activism by young Arabs while it simultaneously provides funds and guns that help cement the power of the Arab governments that the young social and political activists target for change.”

  • Seed Quest of July 22 carried the announcement by U.S. Agriseeds that Mohammad Osman was appointed as its Technical Sales Manager for Middle East and North Africa regions. The paper said that Osman has a BS and MS in agricultural engineering from the American University of Beirut.

  • The New York Times of July 22 published an editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, entitled, “When Arabs Tweet.” He commented on the recent “calls for bids by the U.S. Agency for International Development for programs that would, among other things, train young Arabs how to better use the Internet and other digital technologies for political activism, advocacy, greater transparency and accountability, and other such democratic practices.”

  • The Los Angeles Times of July 23 reported on claims that Kuwaiti Minister of Education Moudhi Humoud met with some of the country’s teachers of Islamic studies “to tone down the incendiary religious content of the nation's school curriculum,” especially regarding the companions of the prophet Mohammad and appropriate behavior at a cemetery. AUB professor of political studies Ahmad Mousalli said that the debate has underlying connotations of the differences in Kuwait between its various Muslim sects.

  • TMC.net of July 27 announced that U.S. President Barack Obama announced a number of new key administrative posts. William R. Hambrecht was appointed as member of the Board of Directors of the Presidio Trust. The paper said that Hambrecht is on the Board of Trustees at the American University in Beirut.

  • Media Line and All Headline News of July 28 reported that the vast majority of Middle Eastern Internet users are highly educated, with 69 percent either have a graduate or post-graduate degree. The paper quoted AUB professor of sociology Nabil Dajani as saying, “No matter what is published in the West about the spread of the Internet, the Internet is not as ‘in’ in the Arab world.”
