  • TTN Worldwide of March 2 reported on Lebanese hotel Le Royal’s new plans to be at the forefront of medical tourism, a sector that is on the rise in Lebanon. The paper quoted Joyce Mouawad, corporate director sales and marketing at the hotel, as saying “Lebanon is well-known for its advanced medical services and internationally trained doctors… [including doctors at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.]”

  • Eventseer.net of March 2 published a call for papers for the forthcoming Academic and Industrial Conference entitled, “Practice and Research Techniques” (TAIC PART 2010). The paper said that Wassim Masri of the American University of Beirut is on the program committee of the conference.

  • Petition Online of March 2 published a petition signed by a number of members of the AUB community announcing their rejection of all forms of normalization of relations with Israeli institutions, and supporting the call of Palestinian civil society for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel including the academic and cultural boycott as one of the few non-violent strategies to bring an end to the Israeli military occupation of Palestinian and other Arab territories. The petition also called on the American University of Beirut, its President and Board of Trustees, its Provost, and Deans of the Faculties, to join with the petitioners in acknowledging that the University recognizes that normal academic exchange with Israeli academic institutions and their faculty is not an option for AUB faculty and staff.

  • Common Ground News Services of March 2 and Kuwait Times of March 3 published an article written by Magda Abu Fadil, the director of AUB’s Journalism Training Program, in which she reported on a three-day workshop for bloggers from Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, held from February 15 to 17, 2010 in the Rabat, Morocco.

  • The Huffington Post of March 3 published a review written by Magda Abu-Fadil, director of the Journalism Training Program at the American University of Beirut, of the recently published book entitled What’s Really Wrong with the Middle East by Brian Whitaker.

  • Rabble.ca of March 5 reported that the American University of Beirut observed the Israeli Apartheid Week during which it hosted “a number of students, faculty and staff alike who came together for the first time in 2010 to join the international event.”

  • Official Wire of March 4 published a political piece commenting on Lebanese President Michel Suleiman’s decision to convene a national dialogue session on March 9, even though the meeting will not change the status of Hizbullah’s arms. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan as saying, “Suleiman may be trying to save face by raising the security issue.”

  • The Los Angeles Times of March 4 reported that Palestinians and Israelis are expected to engage in proximity peace negotiations, adding that the US Middle East envoy George Mitchell will meet separately with Israelis and Palestinians. The paper said that the Arab League endorsed the US plan, and quoted AUB political studies Professor Hilal Khashan as saying, "They [Arab League] want to give a boost to [Palestinian President Mahmoud] Abbas but they know the talks will amount to nothing.”

  • ANBA of March 5 reported that Brazilian writer Milton Hatoum, of Lebanese origin, is in Lebanon to release his book Orphans of Eldorado. The paper said that while in Beirut, Hatoum is scheduled to participate in two conferences upon an invitation by the Brazilian Embassy. One will be held at Saint Joseph University and another at the American University of Beirut, both under theme literature and life experience.

  • Press Telegram of March 7 published an article featuring longtime Whittier eye, ear, nose, and throat specialist, Dr. Henry B. Bikhazi, who is a surgeon and a model ship builder. The paper said that Bikhazi received his Medical Degree from the American University of Beirut in 1962.

  • World Focus of March 11 reported that its radio host, Martin Savidge, is inviting on his blog talk radio Director of AUB’s Journalism Training Program, Magda Abu-Fadil to discuss issues of youth and gender in the Arab world and how these issues compare with other nations in the region.

  • Edge Miami of March 11 published an interview with Dr. Ali Harake who is practicing medicine at Fort Lauderdale. The paper said that he received an MD from the American University of Beirut in 1992.

  • UCLA International Institute of March 12 republished, with permission, an article issued in MainGate alumni magazine of the American University of Beirut entitled, “Lebanon Was Going to Stay,” in which Ann Kerr, UCLA Fulbright coordinator, tells the story Naziha, her former roommate at AUB.

  • The Huffington Post of March 12 published an article featuring Sergeant Jed Anderson, a US Army Arabic linguist in Iraq who was the 64th Arabic linguist discharged under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. The paper said that Anderson is now a graduate student at the American University of Beirut.

  • Construction Week Online of March 13 published an interview with Al Falah Ready Mix General Manager, Abdul Traboulsi, in which he discussed his company's shift towards sustainable building and green manufacturing. The paper said that Traboulsi has a BE from the American University of Beirut.

  • The Los Angeles Times Blogs, Wsfa and Mpumalanga of March 17, Dunton Springs Evening Post, The Herald News Daily, Gulf News, Dar Al-Hayat, and KLKN-TV of March 18, and Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa’, The Free Library, and L’Orient Le Jour of March 19 reported on a lecture given by Mexican tycoon of Lebanese origin Carlos Slim Helu at the American University of Beirut entitled “The New Civilization of Knowledge and Technology.” The papers said that the lecture was organized by the AUB Suliman S. Olayan School of Business.

  • Electronic Intifada of March 19 published a book review of Gabi Baramki's Peaceful Resistance: Building a Palestinian University under Occupation (Pluto Press, 2009), which is a memoir of Palestine's flagship university, Birzeit, by its former acting president. The paper said that Baramki studied chemistry at the American University of Beirut.

  • Zikkir, Ethopian Review, and The Los Angeles Times Blog of March 19 and Harry’s Place of March 21 reported that the recent release of a book that includes articles for 16 Israeli academics and three Palestinian academics triggered a wave of discontent and protest at the American University of Beirut, by some faculty members and student clubs, especially since one of the main editors and contributors to the book is AUB Professor of Sociology, Sari Hanafi.

  • Bhutan Today of March 23 published the memoirs of Raana Haider, the wife of the former Bangladeshi secretary and ambassa­dor to Bhutan, Tufail K. Haider. The paper said that Haidar has an MA in sociology from the American University of Beirut.

  • Inside Higher ED of March 23 reported that the recent release of a book, entitled, The Power of Inclusive Exclusion: Anatomy of Israeli Rule in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, that includes articles by 16 Israeli and three Palestinian academics triggered a wave of discontent and protest at the American University of Beirut especially since one of the main editors and contributors to the book is AUB Professor of Sociology, Sari Hanafi.

  • Kentucky Kernel of March 23 reported that Palestinian legislator and political activist Hanan Ashrawi was invited to give a lecture at the University of Kentucky on the Middle East peace process. The paper said that Ashrawi received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in literature from the American University of Beirut.

  • Penn State Live of March 24 announced that David L. Evans, a professor of biology at Pennsylvania College of Technology, was recently appointed to the editorial board of BioScience, the monthly peer-reviewed journal of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. The paper said that Evans had taught at the American University of Beirut.

  • Scottrade of March 25 published a profile of the country of Lebanon and cited in its history section the period of the civil war which included the assassination of American University of Beirut President Malcolm Kerr on January 18, 1984.

  • Eagle World News of March 26 reported on the Arab League summit due to take place in Libya despite tensions between its Libyan President Moammar Gadhafi and a number of Arab leaders. The paper quoted Hilal Khashan, AUB professor of political studies, as saying, “Arab summits invariably invoke the time-honored theme of Arab unity, but that they never seem to achieve that goal.”

  • Blood of March 25 published the results of clinical trials and observations studying the efficacy of deferasirox in reducing and preventing cardiac iron overload in β-thalassemia. The paper said that Dr. Ali Taher of the American University of Beirut Medical Center contributed to the study.

  • Dallas Business Journal of March 26 featured Deloitte and Touche executive, Reem Samra, in its Minority Business Executives section. The paper said that Samra attended AUB as a student and that her mother “sold the only inheritance she had, a part-ownership in her family house, to use the money to send Samra to the American University of Beirut.”

  • University World News of March 28 reported that Sari Hanafi, a professor of sociology at the American University of Beirut, has been criticized for writing a book in collaboration with two academics from Tel Aviv University.

  • Citibizlist of March 31 carried the announcement by Lexicon Pharmaceuticals that it entered into a major financing agreement with Invus LP, of New York , to help fund its strategic goal of transitioning into an integrated biopharmaceutical company. The paper said that Raymond Debbane, who has been a director at Invus since August 2007 and has a BE in agricultural sciences and agricultural engineering from American University of Beirut, is on the team appointed to collaborate with Lexicon Pharmaceuticals.
