News Blaze of October 4 reported that the U.S. State Department's Office of the Middle East Partnership Initiative announced the launch of the second phase of its Tomorrow's Leaders Scholarship program. People’s Daily Online of October 8 published a political piece arguing that Syria and Hizbullah have been exerting pressure on Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri to reject the Special Tribunal for Lebanon probing the assassination of his father, former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri. Campus Watch of October 10 reported that an interest in Arabic-language studies has grown over the past decade among westerners and that Arabic language programs in the Middle East and North Africa are thriving. The paper gave the example of Steven Koh, 27, who started studying the language while at Cornell three years ago and just completed an intermediate-level intensive summer course at the American University of Beirut. Oregon Public Broadcasting News of October 13 published a political piece commenting on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s controversial visit to Lebanon. South Asian Media Net of October 16 published an article on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad’s visit to Lebanon and the speech he gave in southern Lebanon. The Week of October 19 reported on the completion of the new Dhofar University (DU) campus in Salalah in Oman. International Herald Tribune and The New York Times of October 28 published a political piece commenting on Hizbullah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah’s call to boycott the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Global Exchange of October 28 reported on the formation of a new student group called the Tufts Chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) that hopes to foster discussion and expose students to the Palestinian perspective. The paper said that Sean Smith, who studied at the American University of Beirut last year, hopes the group will help open up a more balanced discussion on campus.
