  • Terra Net and The Daily Star of April 1 published an article commenting on Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat’s March 31 visit to Damascus. The paper quoted AUB Professor of Political Studies Hilal Khashan as saying, “Despite Jumblat’s willingness to do whatever necessary to ingratiate himself again with Syria, [Syrian] President Bashar Assad still appears not to be welcoming Jumblat back into the ranks of Damascus’ allies.”

  • 14 March, Al-Haraka, and Lebanese Kataeb of April 1 reported that the National Fund for Social Security in Lebanon appointed a new medical consultation committee. The papers said that Dr. Mahmoud Shoucair of the American University of Beirut Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Department is among the new members.

  • The Daily Star and Al-Anwar of April 1 and Al-Liwa’ and As-Safir of April 2 reported that Bicharaf for Academic Integrity and Business Ethics and the Civil Welfare League at AUB developed a book exchange and loaning drive to help students borrow university textbooks.   • Al-Markazia and Al-Liwa’ of April 1 and Ad-Diyar Journal of April 2 reported on the Lebanese Medical Informatics Association’s third annual regional conference during which the members of the Grand Medical Consultation Committee for the National Social Security were announced, including Dr. Mahmoud Shoucair, representing the American University of Beirut Medical Center.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of April 1 reported on a concert by Omaima Khalil and a poetry recital by Zahi Webhbe commemorating the “Palestinian Land Day,” held at the American University of Beirut and organized by its Palestinian Cultural Club.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of April 1 reported on the AUB Zaki Nassif Music Program concert held at the American International School in Egypt, Cairo featuring Salim Sahhab, saying that the program also launched its 2010 coral school competition.

  • L’Orient Le Jour of April 2 announced that Kulturzentrum–Jounieh in coordination with the American University of Beirut is holding a Piano recital by Malek Jandali on April 6, 2010 at AUB’s Assembly Hall.

  • Al-Akhbar of April 3 published an editorial commenting on the mixed reactions generated by the visit of Mexican tycoon of Lebanese origin Carlos Slim to Lebanon and referred to his lecture at the American University of Beirut.

  • Beirut Letter and An-Nahar of April 4 published a profile of young female Lebanese football player, Dima Krayyim, who said that she joined the American University of Beirut football varsity team for two years when she was studying economics at the University.

  • Now Lebanon of April 5 published an article highlighting the water problems in the Akkar region in northern Lebanon as it suffers water shortages in the summer and a polluted supply of water throughout the year. The paper quoted Nadim Farajallah, an AUB professor of hydrology and water resources, as saying, “Had the people in Akkar been given the facilities or the ability to purchase a tank to collect this rainwater, at least part of the problem in summer would be solved.”

  • Now Lebanon of April 6 reported on the recent debate over the possible increase in the value added tax (VAT) and its subsequent effects on the low income population in Lebanon. The paper quoted AUB Professor Jad Chaaban as saying, "At the time, instituting the VAT was seen as an easy and effective way to generate treasury income and help lower the massive public debt, which has decreased from 180 percent of the GDP to 160 percent over the last five years."

  • An-Nahar and Beirut Letter of April 8 reported that the Lebanese University will be granting honorary doctorates to a number of distinguished personalities this year. The papers quoted the Dean of the Faculty of Information at the University, George Klas, as saying that honorary doctorates that are being granted by universities in Lebanon, including the American University of Beirut, need to conform to specific criteria.

  • Now Lebanon of April 7 and The Daily Star of April 8 reported that in its monthly report on the violation of freedom of expression and thought in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan, the Samir Kassir Eyes (SKeyes) Foundation called for drafting a modern law to organize the work of the media outlets in Lebanon. The papers said that SKeyes condemned the campaign against Sari Hanafi, an assistant professor of sociology at the American University of Beirut, after he was accused of normalizing relations with Israel after he co-edited a book with two Israeli academics.

  • Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Bayraq, and Al-Anwar of April 7 reported on a lecture given at AUB by Hamilton E. James, president of Blackstone Group, one of the world's largest private equity investment firms. The papers said that the lecture, entitled, "A Fireside Conversation on Current Challenges in the Global Economy," was organized by the AUB Suliman S. Olayan School of Business on March 29. 

  • Al-Balad of April 7 reported on the results of the 16th round of the Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship during which the American University of Beirut team won over that of Jounieh.

  • Al-Liwa' and Lebanon Files of April 7 and An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Akhbar, Lebanon Files, The Daily Star, Al-Anwar, Al-Mustaqbal, and Aaram News of April 8 reported that the American University of Beirut held a reception on April 7, 2010, to celebrate the launch of the Bioethics and Professionalism Program named after former Prime Minister Selim El-Hoss. The papers said that the program will provide an interdisciplinary resource for faculty, students, and members of the community involved in bioethics education, research, and consultation in Lebanon and the region.

  • An-Nahar of April 9 reported on an illustrated lecture organized by the Society of Friends of the AUB Museum by Bassam Ilias, a specialist in precious stones. The paper said that during the lecture Ilias surveyed the historical progression of making beads from precious stones.

  • The Progressive Social Party, Future Newspaper, and Al-Mustaqbal of April 9 published an article surveying the problem of lack of green spaces in the city of Beirut and the expansion of concrete structures throughout the city. The paper quoted AUB Professor of health sciences, Mey Jurdi, as saying that the diminishing of green spaces in Lebanon causes health problems, namely respiratory diseases.

  • Beirut Online of April 9 published an article reporting that Lebanese media has been subject to a number of censorship in March. It said, "In academic circles, a book co-authored by a Palestinian scholar at the American University of Beirut Sari Hanafi, was banned for its editorial collaboration with two anti-Zionist Israeli authors."

  • As-Safir of April 10 announced that a cultural festival bringing Norwegian authors to Lebanon will take place from April 11 to 18.   • Terra Net and The Daily Star of April 12 reported on the breach of a technical fence along the Blue Line by Israeli soldiers on April 9. The papers quoted Timur Goksel, a political science professor at the American University of Beirut, as saying, "The Blue Line doesn’t always follow the [technical] fence.   • The Daily Star of April 12 published an editorial in which the author called for Lebanon's need to manage its resources wisely to achieve sustainable development, and build universities "that can be proud with the contribution of their researchers, rather than with their fancy massive buildings.” On that note, the author made a reference to the founding of the American University of Beirut in 1866.

  • Al-Akhbar and Al-Mustaqbal of April 13 reported that the renovation of the Bayt Beirut building in the Sodeco area of Ashrafieh into a national museum and research venue on the history of Beirut will be officially effective soon and that the renovation will be overseen by Lebanese architect Yuseph Haidar who oversaw the renovation of the AUB archaeological museum.

  • Tymat of April 14 published an article commenting on the adverse effects of raising the Value-Added Tax (VAT) on the low income population in Lebanon. The paper quoted an economic study conducted by AUB professors Jad Chaaban and Nisreen Salti that examined the effects of raising the tax from 10 to 12 percent on the consumer habits of low income population.

  • The Daily Star of April 14 and Terra Net of April 15 published a political piece which argued that the April 15 national dialogue session is not expected to accomplish much, due to the "impossibility of the standing political dynamic allowing for action on substantial issues such as Hizbullah’s arms or Palestinian weapons outside refugee camps." The papers quoted Hilal Khashan, a professor of political studies at the American University of Beirut, as saying, "Even though the dialogue could not affect Hizbullah’s arms, Jumblat’s call [to drop discussions of Hizbullah’s arsenal] represents his gesture of gratitude toward the Shiite party for paving the way for Jumblat to return to Damascus two weeks ago to reconcile with Syrian President Bashar Assad."

  • World News Network of April 19 and The Daily Star and Silobreaker of April 20 reported that the Board of Trustees of the American University of Beirut announced the selection of Talal Shair as the newest member of the University’s board. The paper said that Shair is an AUB alumnus, having studied at the University from 1983-84, and that he then went on to study civil engineering at the American Princeton University. The paper also said that since 2008, Shair had served as chair of Dar Al-Handasah (Shair and Partners) where he started his career years earlier when he joined its Structural Department, later becoming department director after earning a master’s degree from Cornell University.
