The Daily Star, 14 March, Lebanese Kataeb, and Lebanese News Agency of December 6 reported that the United States launched the Developing Rehabilitation Assistance to Schools and Teacher Improvement (D-RASATI) project. It aims to improve student achievement in all public schools and will target thousands of students and staff across 1,300 different schools. The program will be implemented by the Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), in partnership with the American University of Beirut, AMIDEAST, and several charities. Terra Net and The Daily Star of December 23 published a political editorial commenting on France’s recent shipment of 100 HOT missiles to the Lebanese Army signaling Paris’ political support for Prime Minister Saad Hariri. The money, which will be provided over the next five years, will go to advancing student performance and teaching standards in public schools. The new project will be implemented with assistance from Education Development Center, the American University of Beirut, American NGO AMIDEAST, the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development, and several other local partners. Executive of December 24 published an article on the immigration of nurse practitioners from Lebanon and its effects on the medical sector in Lebanon. The paper quoted a 2007 study by the American University of Beirut showing that 57 percent of nurses who left Lebanon did so for financial reasons. Lebanon Files of December 29 reported on a study conducted by the American University of Beirut that found that most vegetables and fruits in Lebanon are not contaminated by pesticides. The study combined food consumption data along with contamination data. It was conducted by assistant professors of nutrition and food sciences Lara Nasreddine and Zeina Kassaify through a jointly funded grant of $20,000 from AUB and the World Health Organization.
