14 March of December 1 reported that a number of Lebanese citizens suffered from salmonella after eating at a restaurant in Akkar. Food samples from the restaurant were sent to the American University of Beirut laboratories to test for the bacteria.

The Daily Star, 14 March, Lebanese Kataeb, and Lebanese News Agency of December 6 reported that the United States launched the Developing Rehabilitation Assistance to Schools and Teacher Improvement (D-RASATI) project. It aims to improve student achievement in all public schools and will target thousands of students and staff across 1,300 different schools. The program will be implemented by the Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), in partnership with the American University of Beirut, AMIDEAST, and several charities.

Ad-Diyar of December 20 reported that the American University of Beirut filed a lawsuit against an anonymous individual after it knew of a fake copy of an AUB certificate and used it to obtain employment.

Ad-Diyar of December 21 reported that AUB Professor Samir Makdisi recently released the results of a research study on democracy in the Arab world in a new book, entitled Democracy in the Arab World: Explaining the Deficit (Routledge), which comprises his own work alongside other renowned scholars.

Now Lebanon of December 22 reported that the “recent televised appearance of Interior Minister Ziad Baroud has brought back to the forefront the sensitive topic of administrative vacancies, estimated by some experts at 80 percent of high ranking civil servants.” AUB professor of public administration Randa Antoun said, “Public sector vacancies are symptomatic of the erosion witnessed by public institutions.”

Terra Net and The Daily Star of December 23 published a political editorial commenting on France’s recent shipment of 100 HOT missiles to the Lebanese Army signaling Paris’ political support for Prime Minister Saad Hariri. AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan said, “Aside from reflecting the pro-Western slant of the Hariri-led March 14 bloc, Paris’ weapons shipment also stems from its long-term support of Lebanon in general, as well as from the strong ties forged by Hariri’s father, five-time former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, with former French President Jacques Chirac.”

Now Lebanon, The Embassy of the United States in Lebanon, Al-Markazia, Beirut Times, Lebanon Files, and Now Lebanon of December 20 and Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa’, An-Nahar, The Daily Star, As-Safir, Al-Bayraq, Al-Balad, Beirut Letter, and Zawya of December 21 reported that Lebanon’s education system received a significant boost with the signing of a $75 million agreement between concerned ministries and the U.S. development agency (USAID). The money, which will be provided over the next five years, will go to advancing student performance and teaching standards in public schools. The new project will be implemented with assistance from Education Development Center, the American University of Beirut, American NGO AMIDEAST, the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development, and several other local partners.

Terra Net of December 21 published a political piece commenting on regional leaders’ efforts to prevent the indictment in the Special Tribunal for Lebanon from breaking Lebanon’s fragile stability. AUB professor of political studies Simon Haddad said, “All the efforts of countries are insisting on stability but it doesn’t appear that indictments could be released without damage.”

Executive of December 24 published an article on the increasing pollution in Lebanon and argued that it remains one of the least addressed issues in the country. AUB professor of environmental health Mey Jurdi said, “In Lebanon we face the total lack of vision and strategy.”

Executive of December 24 published an article on the immigration of nurse practitioners from Lebanon and its effects on the medical sector in Lebanon. The paper quoted a 2007 study by the American University of Beirut showing that 57 percent of nurses who left Lebanon did so for financial reasons. Huda Huijer, director of the School of Nursing at the American University of Beirut, said, “This is a brain drain for us.”

Lebanon Files of December 29 reported on a study conducted by the American University of Beirut that found that most vegetables and fruits in Lebanon are not contaminated by pesticides. The study combined food consumption data along with contamination data. It was conducted by assistant professors of nutrition and food sciences Lara Nasreddine and Zeina Kassaify through a jointly funded grant of $20,000 from AUB and the World Health Organization.
