  • Ahrar News, Lebanese Forces, El-Nashra, and Lebanon Files of December 1 published a political editorial discussing the influence of Lebanese political parties on student bodies at universities in Lebanon. The papers said that despite their prior confidence in winning the student elections at the American University of Beirut, the student section of the Free Patriotic Movement lost this year’s student elections, the fact which is indicative of a decrease in the movement’s popularity.

  • An-Nahar, Beirut Letter, and Khiyam of December 2 published an article surveying the history of Al-Hamra sector in Beirut and the secret of its popularity. The papers said that there are different theories explaining the origin of the name of Pavillion Street in Al-Hamra including claims that it was named after a castle built by one of the earliest professors at the American University of Beirut.

  • Lebanon Files of December 2 published the result of a study sponsored by the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health and partially funded by the World Health Organization on the enforcement of hygiene rules at restaurants in Lebanon. The paper said that the study is based on a survey conducted by Rana Basheer who is a specialist in epidemiology at the American University of Beirut.

  • Al-Anwar of December 2 reported that Paul Tergat, a Kenyan runner who held the world record in the marathon from 2003-07, visited Lebanon upon receiving an invitation from the Beirut Marathon Association. The paper said that Tergat will meet with AUB students as part of his tour.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of December 2 reported that MP Bahia Hariri received Dr. Mouaz Hussein Al- Mallah, head of the cardiac imaging department at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, before his trip to Saudi Arabia where he will be visiting professor at the King Abdul Aziz University in Riyadh. The paper said that Al-Mallah received his MD from AUB in 1998.

  • The Syrian Social Nationalist Party of December 2 published an announcement issued by its American University directorate stating the fact that six of its candidates won seats in the recent American University of Beirut student elections indicates that there is hope for a Lebanese future free of sectarianism.

  • Al-Mustabqal and Al-Manar of December 2 carried the announcement by The Lebanese Association of Women Researchers (Bahithat), which is holding, in collaboration with AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, Ford Foundation Cairo, and Heinrich Böll Foundation, a workshop on December 11-12 focusing on the research findings to be published in Bahithat’s 14th annual book, on the subject of "Cultural Practices of Arab Youth."

  • Al-Markazia and Al-Mustaqbal of December 2 reported that dean of the AUB Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Nahla Hwella will participate in a seminar entitled, “Civil Forum on the United Nations Conference on Climate Change: The Copenhagen Summit.” The papers said that the seminar, which will take place on the afternoon of December 4, is part of the Seminars on Public Policy series organized by the youth sector of the Lebanese Democratic Progressive party.

  • TerraNet and The Daily Star of December 3 reported on the recent visit of Special Tribunal for Lebanon Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare who met with Lebanese President Michel Sleiman and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri last Wednesday to ensure that the new Cabinet would continue its coordination with the tribunal. The papers quoted AUB professor of sociology Sari Hanafi, who also teaches about transitional justice, as saying that “the sort of justice practiced by international tribunals and similar prosecutions requires patience,” giving the example of the indictment of former Chilean dictator August Pinochet some 10 years after the establishment of democracy in Chile.

  • Now Lebanon, Al-Anwar, Al-Mustaqbal, www.tayyar.org, Lebanon Files, Elnashra, and Lebanese Kataeb of December 3, and TerrNet and The Daily Star of December 4 carried the announcement by the Board of Deans of the American University of Beirut, which said that student cabinet elections at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the University Student-Faculty Committee elections have been postponed until further notice. The papers said that the decision came after allegations were made by various student groups who competed in the Student Representative Council elections of November 17.

  • Al-Akhbar of December 3 published a review of a recently published book entitled, “George Habash: Ath-Thwaruyyun la Yamutuna Abadan” (George Habash: Revolutionaries Never Die), by French journalist George Malbrunot, featuring the late head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), George Habash. The paper said that Habash was named Al-Hakim, meaning the doctor, because he was a medical student at AUB.

  • TerraNet and The Daily Star of December 4 published an article featuring a new Lebanese party called the Green Party of Lebanon (GPL) whose mission is to promote a green Lebanon, stressing that this green movement needs decisive political action to bring about fundamental change regarding the environment. The papers said that more than 900 people joined the party in one year and that GPL’s winning of seats at the American University of Beirut’s recent student elections was also a major boost.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of December 3 published an article discussing the social and medical status of AIDS patients in Lebanon. The paper said that the Rita Wahhab organization tries to provide medical facilities for AIDS patients in Lebanon and that the social services office in the American University of Beirut helps them with that.

  • Al-Markazia and Elnashra of December 3 reported that the Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Nahla Hwella met with the Lebanese Minister of Agriculture Husein Hajj Hasan to discuss ways to nurture collaboration with UNDP and to microfinance Lebanese farmers.

  • Lebanon News, www.tayyar.org, and Lebanon Files of December 4 reported that the Lebanese customs police confiscated a shipment at Beirut’s port arriving from Egypt due to worries that it might contain toxins and carcinogenic agents. The papers said that samples from the shipment were sent for testing at the American University of Beirut Medical Center’s laboratories.   • tayyar.org of December 4 reported that the opposition students at the American University of Beirut are holding a press conference at the headquarters of the Free Patriotic Movement to discuss trespasses during the recent student elections at the University. The paper said that the Board of Deans of the American University of Beirut suspended student cabinet elections at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the University Student-Faculty Committee until further notice.

  • Al-Liwa’ of December 3 reported that AUB Dean of Student Affairs Maroun Kisirwani called for an urgent meeting between students of the March 14 coalition and the opposition to try to resolve the recent conflicts that emerged between the two parties after the SRC elections and preceding the USFC elections.

  • An-Nahar of December 4 reported on an illustrated lecture held on December 2 and entitled “The Temple of Echmoun: New details of architecture and sculpture,” by Professor Rolf A. Stucky, Former Director of the Institute of Classical Archaeology in Basle. The paper said that the lecture was organized by the Society of the Friends of the AUB Museum.

  • Now Lebanon of December 4 reported that Lebanese Grace Jalkh, whose husband has been working abroad for more than ten years, poisoned and killed her three children in their Behsaf-Metn home before committing suicide. The paper, which shed light on the phenomenon of single parenting in Lebanon due to one of the spouses working abroad, quoted AUB professor of sociology Sari Hanafi as saying, “In many such cases, the whole family moves abroad, but then the mother brings the children back while her husband stays overseas and sends money. This is more likely to happen if the parents are conservative and want to raise their children in Lebanon, close to the extended family and in an environment that reinforces their own beliefs and traditions.”

  • Elnashra of December 4 carried the announcement by the American University of Beirut that it will celebrate its 143rd Founders Day on Monday December 7 and that AUB president Peter Dorman and Professor Emeritus Makhluf Haddadin will be giving speeches at the ceremony.   • Now Lebanon of December 5 reported on the high rate of Lebanese citizens suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of years of war and violence. The paper cited a study conducted by the American University of Beirut, which concluded that rates of PTSD and depression reach 30 percent in some areas of southern Lebanon. The paper, which said that despite the prevalence of mental health problems in the country, said there are currently no government programs that adequately address the situation, and quoted AUB professor of psychiatry Laila Farhood as saying that “as far as I’m concerned, the government has nothing [for mental healthcare] in Lebanon.”

  • Nahar Net of December 6 reported on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s recent visit to Beirut and commented that while the presence of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon was supposed to be temporary, their chances of returning to their homeland is dwindling with every failed attempt to settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Farid El Khazen as saying, “A permanent settlement of the Palestinians in Lebanon is a real demographic, political and security threat.”

The papers said that the ceremony, whose theme focused on embracing and enhancing diversity on campus, included the announcement of the winners of the student essay contest on tolerance and diversity.

  • The Daily Star of December 8 reported on the recent explosion of a bus containing Iranian pilgrims in Syria killing three and injuring dozens. The paper said that the explosion coincided with the visit of Saeed Jalili, the head of Iran's Security Council, to Syria. The paper also quoted Simon Haddad, professor of politics at the American University of Beirut (in Spring 2010), who noted the significance of the intended targets – Shiite Muslims, as saying, “There is a history of explosions in Syria, they were mainly attributed to Sunni groups, but this time the targets are different.”

  • The Daily Star of December 12 published the results of a recent medical experiment that can cure sickle cell disease among adults through bone marrow transplant, a procedure that is already used among children to cure the disease.
