Al-Mustaqbal of January 3 published an article on Mohammad al-Qarsifi who suffered serious injuries following an accident during which he fell out of the window of his fifth floor apartment. Following a series of corrective surgeries, Qarsifi joined the American University of Beirut as a student.

Al-Liwa’ of January 3 published an article on the major student incidents that took place at universities in Lebanon during 2010, including student protests over the increase in tuition fees at the American University of Beirut.

The Daily Star of January 3 published a political editorial arguing that a war between Israel and Hezbollah is unlikely to erupt in 2011. It noted however that the ceasefire between the two sides depends on Lebanon’s internal stability and the competence of the international peacekeeping forces. Retired army general and political studies lecturer at the American University of Beirut Elias Hanna said, “Recent intensive military training exercises performed by Israel were a deliberate demonstration that its military was capable of defeating Hezbollah.”

www.tayyar.org and Al-Akhbar of January 5 published an article investigating whether or not the “Healthy Shisha,” which was recently released in the market, is actually healthy. An inquiry conducted by the American University of Beirut found that, unlike its name, this new shisha is equally hazardous to health as the regular one. Al-Mustaqbal of Janu ary 5 reported on the death of Ahmad Hussein al-Yamani, also known as Abu Maher, one of the founders of the Arab nationalistic movement. He met other founders of the movement such as Wadih Haddad and George Habash at the American University of Beirut where he was invited by them to give a lecture. The Daily Star of January 13 reported on the resignation of Lebanese opposition ministers from Cabinet, which led to the toppling Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s government. AUB Professor of political studies Hilal Khashan said, “Whatever the various scenarios for the next cabinet’s formation, in the end the polarized political groups will still in all likelihood reach a deal over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, simply because Lebanon’s delicate confessional balance requires that all sides compromise to keep the country afloat.”

Naharnet of January 21 reported that policeman Youssef Shbaqloa a bodyguard of Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani was killed in friendly fire in the Beirut neighborhood of Aisha Bakkar. Another civilian, Mohammed al-Rassem, was injured in the incident. Rassem was taken to the American University of Beirut Medical Center for treatment.

The Daily Star, Al-Bayraq, L’Orient Le Jour, Al-Anwar, Al-Liwa’, and An-Nahar of January 25 reported that the American University of Beirut received a $1.5 million check from the U.S. Agency for International Development for scholarships. The donation covered scholarships granted to 854 students who were studying at AUB during the 2010 academic year. U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly presented the check to AUB president Peter Dorman in the presence of administrators from AUB and the embassy and some students who benefited from the aid.
