  • Al-Liwa and Al-Akhbar of January 1 published an article by Mohammad Jaber, highlighting the most significant events in the universities of Lebanon over the year 2007. They included protests, clashes among students from different political parties and strict administrative decisions. The paper said that 2007 included many protests by AUB and USJ students condemning the new raise in the tuition fees, particularly in AUB on November 8. Pointing out that AUB postponed the student elections until January 11 concluded the article.

  • As-Safir of January 1 announced that a Lecture: "Armenia Through the Ages", will be given by Dr. Arda Ekmekji, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Haigazian University, at Assembly Hall on January 7. The paper said that the lecture is organized by the Women's League.

  • Al-Jazeera Magazine of January 2 published an article by Rami Khoury, the director of the Issam Fares Institute (IFI) for Public Policy and International Affairs at AUB, highlighting the acts of terrorism and violent operations that took place over the year 2007 in many countries of the Arab world and South Asia, like Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Sudan, Somalia, Lebanon, Pakistan and Algeria.

  • An-Nahar of January 3, the Daily Star of January 4 and Al-Anwar of January 6 reported that AUB Office of Information and Public Relations published AUB's 2008 calendar, featuring a selection from the Blatchford Collection of photographs, which is held at the University's Jafet Library. The Blatchford Collection consists of 800 images from the region shot between 1800 and 1900 by important photographs in the Middle East, such as Bonfils, Dumas, Sarrafian, Dupre and Amodi. The 2008 AUB Calendar, which surveys the history of the Blatchford Collection, highlights photos taken by the Bonfils family who took more than 179 indoor scenes, landscapes and portraits from Europe and the Middle East. Photos from the calendar were included in the newspapers.

  • Al-Akhbar of January 3 reported on the forthcoming concert by Walid Howrani to be held on the same day at Assembly Hall in support of the Scholarship and Research Fund.

  • Al-Qabas (Kuwait), Al-Jarida (Kuwait), Ar-Rai (Kuwait), As-Siyasa-Arab Times (Kuwait) of January 2 reported on the early meetings of the International Consultancy Council of the National Bank of Kuwait. Papers carried the statement by the Executive Director of the Bank Ibrahim Shukri Dabdoub, who declared the names of the members of the Council, which included AUB President John Waterbury.

  • Emirates News Agency (UAE), Al Ittihad (UAE), the Gulf Today (UAE), Dar al-Hayat (Lebanon) and Dar al-Hayat (Britain) of January 3, Ash-Sharq al-Awsat (Saudi Arabia) of January 5, Jaridat aj-Jarida of January 7 and Middle East on-Line (Britain) of January 10 reported that Abu-Dhabi's Committee for Culture and Heritage in coordination with Peabody Museum for Natural History in Yale University will be running a land survey for the Western Area of Abu-Dhabi, looking for fossils that go back to the Modern Myosin age of 6 to 8 million years ago. The committee took samples from the earth layers with the help of Geologist Ali Haidar from AUB.

  • Adab Wa Fan (Others) of January 3 reported on the launching of an exhibition for renowned Iraqi Architect Zaha Hadi in London. The paper included a brief biography of Zaha Hadid, saying that she was born in October 31, 1950 in Baghdad and that she graduated from AUB in 1971 with a BS in Mathematics.

  • Al-Waqt (Bahrain) of January 3 published an article about the late Leila Fakhro, known as "Mama Huda" from Dhufar in the Sultanate of Oman, outlining her accomplishments and achievements as a teacher. The paper said that Leila studied Mathematics at AUB and that her family lost contact with her when she was at AUB in September 1969, when she joined the Dhufar rebellion.

  • Al-Waqt (Bahrain) of January 3 reviewed Sunallah Ibrahim's novel Warda (rose) published by Dar Al-Mustaqbal Al-Arabi on 2000. The book features the author's memories of several rebellions in Dhufar, and a woman known as Warda who used to study medicine at AUB during the sixties.

  • Dar al-Hayat (Britain) of January 3 published an article by Jihad al-Khazen, reviewing the Dictionary of Correcting the Language of Media by the Moroccan Intellectual Dr. Abdul-Hadi Bou Taleb. The paper said that the book recounts the history of a whole generation of Palestinian and Arab intellectuals, students and professors from AUB, including Nicola Ziyadeh (who used to be the author's teacher at AUB).

  • Ar-Rai (Kuwait) of January 3 announced that the Kuwaiti Banks Federation will be celebrating its 25th anniversary on January 6 with the participation of the former American Minister of Treasury John Sinno, and that the ceremony will include a seminar on the role of the banking sector in Kuwait. The paper said that the Vice-Prime Minister Nasser Abdullah Ar-Radwan and Dr. Youssef Abdullah al-Uwadi would be among the participants. The paper added that Al-Uwadi got his BA in economics from AUB and his PhD in Philosophy and MA in economics from Colorado University in the US.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of January 4 and Al-Liwa and Al-Mustaqbal of January 8 reported on the several lectures related to the Helicobacter pylori given respectively by Dr. Alaa Sharara, the chairman of the Gastroenterology Department at AUBMC, and pharmaceutical representatives. The paper said that the lectures were organized by the Lebanese Order of Physicians in coordination with the Lebanese Society of the Stomach and Intestine Diseases.

  • Ar-Rai (Jordan) of January 4 and Al-Bayan (UAE) of January 10 reported the death of Sharif al-Alami, presenter of the TV show "Seen wa Jeem" (question and answer). The paper included a brief biography of Al-Alami who was born in Haifa and who graduated from AUB in 1953.

  • Middle East Times (Britain) of January 5 published an article by Rami Khoury, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at AUB, addressing events in Pakistan, the US and Israel, as well as the most recent recorded message of Usama Bin laden.

  • An-Nahar, Ad-Diyar, Al-Akhbar, Al-Liwa, As-Safir, Al-Balad, Al-Mustaqbal, Ash-Sharq and Al-Anwar of January 5 reported on the ceremony held by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) on December 6 at Issam Fares Hall, to celebrate the designation of the Nutrition and Food Sciences Department as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for research, training and outreach in nutrition and food science. Papers excerpted the addresses by the participants including AUB Provost Peter Heath, WHO Country Representative Hussein Abu Zaid, FAFS Dean Nahla Hwalla, Farid Karam, representing the Ministry of Public Health and Sawsan Wazzan Jabri, who is an AUB graduate and the co-owner and general manager of the Nutrition and Diet Center.

  • Ad-Diyar, Al-Mustaqbal and Al-Anwar of January 5 reported on the meeting of the University Sports Federation, announcing the schedule of the federation championships for the coming year. The papers said that AUB would be hosting the Dahyeh Race on January 12, 2008 (2000 m for women and 3000 m for men).

  • Al-Akhbar of January 5 published a corrigendum, announcing that the concert to be given at Assembly Hall by AUB Alumni Association will be on Thursday January 31 and not on Thursday January 10 as mentioned by the paper before.

  • Al-Waqt (Bahrain) of January 6 reported on the ceremony held by the Lebanese Singer Fares Karam in support of the CCCL, at AUBMC.

  • Kuwaiti newspapers Aj-Jarida and Ar-Rai of January 6 and Arab Times of January 7 reported on the conclusion of the workshop held by the Gulf for Investment Institute in coordination with AUB. Papers excerpted the addresses by the participants including Dean of AUB Olayan School of Business George Najjar, who supervised the workshop along with his team from AUB, and who expressed his pleasure in cooperating with the institute.

  • Al-Anbat (Jordan) of January 6 reported on the marriage of Dr. Nadim Al-Mounla, the former general manager of Future TV Station and former Miss Lebanon Norma Naoum on January 5. The paper included a brief biography of Dr. Al-Mounla saying that he graduated in economics from AUB in 1974, got his PhD from North California in LA in 1986 and worked as an associate professor there from 1980 to 1985.

  • Ad-Diyar and Al-Mustaqbal of January 6 reported on the annual meeting of the American Faculty of Surgeons-Lebanon branch, held in Rotana-Gefinor Hotel, electing the new administrative council. Papers said that Dr. George Zaytoun of AUBMC was elected as vice-president, and Dr. Bassem Safadi also of AUBMC was elected as member.

  • Dar al-Hayat (Britain) of January 7 reported on exhibition by Lebanese Artist Mona Basilli Sihnawi, on the theme of birds. The paper included a brief biography of Sihnawi saying that she studied arts in Alexandria and pursued her studies in AUB and the United States.

  • Al-Moheet (Egypt) of January 7 reported that CASAR will be launching its Second International Conference entitled "Freedom and Justice: America and the Middle East" from January 7 to January 10.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Akhbar, As-Safir Al-Anwar, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar and Al-Bayraq of January 8 carried the announcement by AUB Information and Public Relations Office that reviewing the university records confirms that Mohammad Rida Taymour Mohammad who killed an exchange agent in Anjar in the Beqaa, is not an AUB student.

  • The Daily Star, An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Liwa, Al-Anwar and Al-Mustaqbal of January 8 reported that AUBMC has formally received full accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI) on January 2. Papers published parts of the congratulations letter addressed to Dr. Nadim Cortas, AUB's VP for Medical Affairs and Raja N. Khuri Dean of Faculty of Medicine, by JCIA Executive Director Ann K. Jacobson .

  • The Free Patriotic Movement website (tayyar.org), As-Safir and Al-Mustaqbal of January 8 reported on the news published in Distinction Series Magazine, that Lebanese Physician Abbas Shamseddine had been chosen to be the best Radiologist and best Surgeon in the United States for the year 2007. Papers said that was born in Joun in the Chouf area of Lebanon and graduated from AUB Medical Center, before starting his work in Emory Hospital in Atlanta.

  • Al-Liwa and Al-Akhbar of January 8and An-Nahar, Al-Anwar, Al-Bayraq, As-Safir, Al-Liwa and Al-Mustaqbal of January 9 reported on the AUB student elections campaign and the preparations by AUB administration and students � for the event, planned for January 11, with 186 candidates competing on 95 chairs.

  • Middle East on-Line of January 8 published an article by Rami Khoury, AUB's ISI director, about the coming visit of US President George W. Bush to the Middle East. Khoury described the visit as worrying.

  • Tishreen (Syria) of January 8 reported on the missions of the Tartous Division for Exploration, investigating 17 archeological sites. The paper reported on the exploration by the AUB team in Tell Kazel, and the discovery of many archeological objects that date back to ancient historical eras.

  • Bahrain Tribune of January 9 published an article about the coming visit of US President George W. Bush to the Middle East. The paper included the opinion of AUB Political Science Professor Hilal Khashan.

  • An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Akhbar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Anwar and Al-Liwa of January 9 reported on CASAR's Second International Conference entitled "Freedom and Justice: America and the Middle East" which was held from January 7 to 10, mainly in West Hall. Most of the papers excerpted the addresses by the participants in the opening session, including CASAR Director Patrick McGreevy, Provost Peter Heath and the Representative of Walid Bin Talal Foundation Latifa al-Basir, Most of the papers also reported that the launching sessions included a debate meeting with the participation of Dr. Jalal Qadeer (Pennsylvania University), Dr. Stanley Katz (Princeton University), AUB IFI Director Rami Khoury and Scott Lucas (Birmingham University) and Dr. Melanie Macalister (George Washington University).

  • An-Nahar, Al-Akhbar, Al-Bayraq, Al-Liwa and Al-Mustaqbal of January 9 reported on the results of the seventh round of the Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship, held as part of the tournament organized by the university Sports Federation. Papers said that AUB lost to LAU (42/48) and that a contest will be held on January 11 between AUB and NDU on the latter's field.

  • Gulf Today (UAE) and Emirates News Agency (UAE) of January 11 reported on the progressive work done by Abu-Dhabi's Committee for Culture and Heritage in coordination with Yale University looking for fossils that go back to ancient times. Papers said that Geologist Ali Haidar of AUB was among the members of the study.

  • Free Patriotic Movement (tayyar.org) of January 11 published an article by Zeina Birjawi about the preparations in AUB for the SRC elections, describing the tension among the coalitions.

  • Aljazeera.com (UAE) of January 11 published an article entitled "The Best and the Worst for America this Week" written by Rami Khoury, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at AUB. In his article, the writer highlighted the outcome of the US President George W. Bush's  visit to the Middle East.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Balad, As-Safir, Al-Liwa and L'Orient-Le Jour of January 11 reported on the forthcoming AUB student elections, which will take place on the same day, where 174 students will be competing for 83 seats. Papers described the strategies adopted by the coalitions and included the opinion of several students representing different political parties and others who are independent.

  • Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Akhbar, Al-Anwar and Al-Liwa of January 11, AME (UAE) of January 13 and L'Orient-Le Jour of January 14  reported on the ceremony during which 985 students from AUB received scholarships of $ 3 million from the US government. Papers said that VP of the Commission in the US Embassy Bill Grant, the Director of USAID in Lebanon Raouf Youssef and Provost Heath were among the participants. Papers also carried the statement by Grant, who said that the American people, through the congress had supported the education in Lebanon by $ 90 million since 10 years.

  • Arabianbusiness.com, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Bayraq, Al-Akhbar, Al-Liwa, Al-Hayat and Al-Anwar of January 11 announced that the Worldwide AUB Alumni Association will be launching its first international convention at West Hall on January 12. Papers said that the event will be attended by more than 100 participants from more than 17 countries in the Middle East, Europe, America and Asia and that AUB President John Waterbury, former Prime Minister and AUB Board of Trustees member Najib Mikati, WAAAUB Executive Committee President Khalil Mekkawi, WAAAUB Alumni Council President Faisal Al-Mutawa and Provost Peter Heath will be among the participants.

  • The Daily Star of January 11 reported on CASAR  Second International Conference entitled "Freedom and Justice: America and the Middle East" which was launched from January 7 till 10 in Rotana Gefinor Hotel, with the participation of 60 participants from 15 different countries. Most of the papers excerpted the addresses by the participants of the launching sessions including CASAR Director Patrick McGreevy, Provost Peter Heath, the Representative of Walid Bin Talal Foundation Latifa al-Busseir, Most of the papers also reported that the launching sessions included a debate meeting with the participation of Dr. Jalal Kadir (Pennsylvania University), Dr. Stanley Katz (Princeton University) AUB IFI Chair Rami el-Khoury and Scott Lucas (Birmingham University).

  • Al-Liwa of January 11 reported on the forthcoming concert by Walid Horani to be held on the same day at Assembly Hall in support of the Scholarship and Research Fund.

  • Lâ?? Orient Le Jour of January 11 reported that AUBMC had formally received full accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI).

  • An-Nahar (Youth supplement) of January 11 published a lengthy report by Karim Abu Merii about the universities of Lebanon and the strategies and policies of the student elections in them. The paper talked about the important role played by AUB SRC elections and carried the statement by Dean of Student Affairs Maroun Kisirwani about AUB's persistence in running the elections despite the current difficulties and the tense political situation in the country.

  • Al-Qabas of January 12 reported on the death of Sharif al-Alami, the Presenter of the TV show Seen wa Jeem (question and answer). The paper included a brief biography of Al-Alami who was born in Haifa and who graduated from AUB in 1953.

  • Nowlebanon.com of January 12 included the opinion of AUB Professor Paul Morkos, who teaches business law in AUB, regarding the law which prohibits the Central bank from selling its gold.

  • Los -Angeles Times (US) of January 12 published an interview with the LAU Joseph Jabra about the role of his university in Beirut and the role played by universities adopting the American system of teaching in the Middle East. Jabra said that in the future we will witness more and more graduates from LAU and AUB.

  • Al-Ittihad (UAE) of January 12 published an article about the latest visit of Amr Mousa, the Secretary General of the Arab League to Lebanon, trying to reach a settlement among the opposing political parties of the country. The paper included the opinion of several experts including Professor of Arabic as a Foreign Language in AUB, the Canadian David William, who wished Lebanon and the Arab countries peace and who was optimistic about Mousa's visit.

  • An-Nahar, Ash-Sharq, Al-Liwa, Al-Akhbar, L'Orient Le Jour, the Daily Star, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Anwar, As-Safir, Al-Balad, Al-Bayraq and March 14 of January 12 and Ad-Diyar of January 13 reported at length on the results of AUB SRC elections.

  • An-Nahar of January 12 reported on the gala dinner held in Hotel Ritz Carlton in Qatar in support of the CCCL at AUBMC.

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of January 12 announced that two conferences will be launched by the Lebanese-German Association under the theme "Knowing Germany" in the Kulturgalerie of the Kultuzentrum in Jounieh on  January 14. The paper said that Political Science Professor Theodore Hanff of AUB and Fribourg University and Professor Jean Salem of USJ will be among the participants.

  • Al-Liwa and Al-Anwar of January 12 reported on the forthcoming first-ever convention of the Worldwide AUB Alumni Association to be held on the same day at West Hall.

  • Al-Anwar, An-Nahar, Ad-Diyar and Al-Mustaqbal of January 13 reported on the Worldwide Alumni Association of AUB first international convention, which was held at West Hall on January 12, aiming at adopting a set of objectives that will help its Board of Directors achieve its mission. Papers excerpted the addresses by the participants including former Prime Minister Najib Mikati (the keynote speaker at the event), AUB President John Waterbury, WAAAUB President Khalil Mekkawi, WAAAAUB council chair Faisal Al-Mutawa, who is also on the Olayan School of Business advisory board.

  • Dar al-Hayat (Britain) of January 13 reported on the speech given by Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati during the first convention of the Worldwide Alumni Association of AUB.

  • Al-Akhbar of January 14 excerpted the lecture given by Dr. Mounir Bashshour on the development of the Western Universities in the Arab Countries in Marbouta cafe in Hamra. The lecture is part of a series organized by AUB Sociology Department as part of the Sociology Monthly Cafe.

  • Al-AKhbar of January 14 published an article by Layal Haddad, reviewing AUB Professor Rami Olleyks autobiographyThe Route of Bees: The Government of Rami Olleyk. In his book, the author recounted his life as a student at AUB. He also talked about his experience as a member of Hizbullah party.

  • Al-Akhbar of January 14 announced that a Debate: "Are public health professionals employees of the system or agents of change?" will be held West Hall on January 15. The paper said that the event is organized by AUB FHS.

  • The Daily Star, Al-Bayraq, Al-Liwa, As-Safir, Ash-Sharq and Al-Anwar of January 14 reported at length on the conclusion of the Worldwide AUB Alumni Association first international convention. Papers excerpted the addresses by AUB President John Waterbury, Former Prime Minister and AUB Board of Trustees member Najib Mikati, WAAAUB Executive Committee President Khalil Makkawi, WAAAUB Alumni Council President Faisal Al-Mutawa and Provost Peter Heath.

  • Al-Liwa of January 14 reported on the workshop held on strategic principles including ones to limit the danger of drugs, held in Padova Hotel in Sin el-Fil.. Papers excerpted the addresses by the participants including Dr. Mustapha al-Naqib, representing the Lebanese Minister of Health Mohammad Jawad Khalifeh and the Director of the National Program of fighting AIDS. Dr. An-Naqib talked about a number of national studies conducted by the ministry and several NGOs and in coordination with an academic team from AUB Medical School, to asses the situation of the addicted people. The event was organized by the Health Care society, supported by WHO.

  • Al-Liwa and As-Safir of January 14 reported on the results of AUB students � elections, where both coalitions (March 14 and March 8) claimed victory.

  • Ad-Diyar of January 14 reported on the gala dinner held in Hotel Ritz Carlton in Qatar in support of CCCL of Saint-Jude affiliated with AUBMC. The paper said that the event was held under the sponsorship of the General Manager of Qatar Institute for Education, Science and Society Development Sheikha Moza Bint Naser Al-Musned and with the participation Sheikh Bin Hamad Al-Thani.

  • Al-Qabas of January 14 reported on an article written by Late Intellectual Edward Said, when his university (Colombia University) gave him a grant to spend one year at AUB in 1972. The paper talked about the effect of this visit on Edwards acquaintance with the Arab heritage.

  • Emirates News Agency (UAE) and Al-Bayan (UAE) of January 14 reported on the two-day workshop by Al-Qodra Holding in Abu-Dhabi on corporate governance. The paper excerpted the addresses by the participants including Dr. Asem Safeiddine of AUB who talked about the importance of corporate governance in making the future of big corporations prosperous.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Liwa, As-Safir and Al-Bayraq of January 15 reported on the results of AUB SRC elections and carried the announcement by Dean of Student Affairs Maroun Kisirwani, assigning the AUB USFC elections on Friday January 18.

  • An-Nahar, Ad-Diyar, Al-Anwar, As-Safir, L'Orient Le Jour, Al-Balad, and Al-Bayraq of January 15 reported on the results of the eighth round of the Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship, held as part of the tournament organized by the university Sports Federation. Papers said that AUB beats to NDU (40/10) in the first round (14-4) and that a contest will be held on January 19 between AUB- Jounieh on Amin Abdulnour Field in Bhamdoun.

  • Al-Anwar of January 15 reported on the conclusion of the Worldwide AUB Alumni Association first international convention which aimed in adopting a set of objectives that will help its Board of Directors achieve its mission.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of January 15 reported on the new inauguration of the Ghandourieh Clinic in South Lebanon by Lebanon United in collaboration with International Medical Corps (IMC). The paper also talked about the collaboration done by Lebanon United with Brave Heart Fund affiliated with AUBMC, in helping children suffering from congenital cardiac diseases.

  • Middle East on-Line (Britain) of January 15 published an article by Rami el-Khoury, the director of Independence and Sovereignty. In his article, El-Khoury talked about the US President George W. Bush's visit to the Middle East and the Gulf Area, highlighting the attitude of the Arab countries towards that visit and revealing the US foreign policy in the region.

  • An-Nahar of January 16 published an article by George Nasif, about the last car blast which went off in an American Diplomatic car accusing the US policy behind these acts. The writer called on protecting AUB from falling apart and from the sectarianism of the country. He highlighted the ancient role of AUB who adopted the Arab national secular intellect, saying that if AUB falls apart, then there will be no country.

  • An-Nahar, Ash-Sharq, Al-Akhbar, Al-Anwar , Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa and As-Safir of January 16 reported on  AUB USFC elections held on January 15.  Paper also reported on the postponement of the Student's Government Elections. (Henry, I am keeping this for you as per agreed).

  • Al-Anwar of January 16 reported on the book signing ceremony of Najib al-Bainis new book Lebanese Pioneer Journalists and Creative Writers, during the 51st Arab Book Festival. The book compiles the memoirs of distinguished Lebanese women writers and journalists. The paper said that Al-Baini found difficulties in gathering information about the biographies of these well-known Lebanese women and that he depended on several libraries including AUB library. The book is published by Dar Nawfal Press 2007.

  • Al-Anwar of January 16 reported on exhibition launched by the Lebanese Artist Mona Basilli Sahnawi, holding the theme of the birds and their gracious role in cruel places. The paper included a brief biography of Sahnawi saying that she studied arts in Alexandria and pursued her studies in AUB and the United States.

  • The Daily Star of January 16 published an article by John Jeha, 17 year old ACS student and an editor of the latter's newspaper, about AUB SRC elections and their importance, lauding AUB administration role in enhancing democracy.

  • As-Safir of January 16 published an article by Zeina Birjawi, who reported on the results of AUB SRC elections and outlined the history of leftist parties in AUB including the Communist Party, the Democratic Leftist Movement, the People Movement and Bila Hodoud. The paper talked about their foundation, evolution and  national role.

  • As-Safir and Al-Balad of January 16 announced a workshop will be launched by AUB's Journalist Training Program (JTP) about the coverage of elections on February 5 until 8. The workshop will be in Arabic.

  • Ash-Sharq al-Awsat (Saudi Arabia) of January 16 reported on the Chocolate Week launched in Italy. The paper reported on the lecture given by AUB Professor in Nutrition Rami Zureyk on the benefits of the local Lebanese products.

  • Al-Qabas (Kuwait) of January 16 announced that the first meeting of the International Consultancy Council of the National Bank of Kuwait will be held on January 29 and 30. The paper included the names of the members of the Council, which included AUB President John Waterbury.

  • An-Nahar, Ad-Diyar, Ash-Sharq, Al-Bayraq and L'Orient Le Jour of January 17 reported on the inauguration of the Walid Bin Talal Center for Studies on the Arab World in Saint-Joseph University with the participation of VP of Walid Bin Talal Foundation Leila Solh and the University President Father Rene Shamousi. Papers excerpted the addresses by the participants including the Director of Walid Bin Talal Foundation for Educational and Social Affairs Abdul-Salam Marini, who talked about the different academic centers for research founded by the foundation in different universities including the Center for American Studies And Research (CASAR) at AUB.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Akhbar, As-Safir and the Daily Star of January 17 carried the statement by Dean of Student Affairs Maroun Kisirwani, declaring that the misunderstanding between two student groups during the SRC elections had been amiably resolved. Papers said that newly elected AUB SRC chose 17 students to represent it on the USFC, which is headed by AUB President. The USFC election had been scheduled for Tuesday January 15 and was postponed due to the bomb blast against the US embassy convoy.

  • An-Nahar of January 17 published an article by Karim Abu Merii about the recent SRC elections held at AUB and the tension among the different coalitions. The paper described the elections as a reflection of the tense political crisis in Lebanon and AUB society as a reflection of the Lebanese society.

  • Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Bayraq, Al-Liwa, As-Safir and Al-Anwar of January 17 reported on the conclusion of the Lebanese Universities meeting in Saida organized by its municipality. Papers excerpted the addresses by Saida municipality head Abdul-Rahman Bizri and said that AUB was among the participants.

  • As-Safir of January 17 reported that the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) (the Nutrition and Food Science Department) has been appointed as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for research, training and outreach in nutrition and food science.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of January 17 announced that a lecture in French by Asaad Seif, the coordinator of archaeological excavations, Directorate General of Antiquities (DGA) will be given at AUB Museum on January 23. The paper said that the lecture is entitled "New Archaeological Discoveries in Beirut: The DGA Approach" and that the event is organized by the Society of the Friends of the AUB Museum.

  • Al-Akhbar of January 17 reported on the Seat Belt campaign launched by Kun Hadi (Be Calm) Society in NDU and AUB. The paper said that the campaign included a petition (Make Road Safe) signed by the students, which will be sent to the United Nation for supporting Lebanon's road safety.

  • An-Nahar of January 17 published an article by Nafisa Rifai about her memories with the Writer Nazeq Saba Yared. In her article, Rifai included a review of the content of Nazeq's autobiography entitled "Incomplete Memories" published by Dar As-Saqi. The paper said that Nazeq got her PhD in Arabic literature from AUB.

  • Al-Liwa of January 17 published an article by Suzan Mnassa about AUB SRC elections and how they were carried out in "an almost perfect way".

  • Al-Qabas (Kuwait) of January 17 published an article about the Lebanese Buisnessman Nicola Hayek, founder of Swatch watches, who is well-known in the industry of Swiss Watches. The paper said that Nicola Hayek's father was a dentist at AUB and that he himself was an AUB student.

  • Middle East Times (Britain) of January 17 published an article by Rami el-Khoury, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at AUB, about the US foreign policy and the ideologies of President Bush administration in encouraging the war against terrorism.

  • Ar-Rai (Kuwait) of January 17 reported on the speech given by Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati during the first convention of the Worldwide Alumni Association of AUB.

  • Tayyar.org of January 17 published an article about the bomb attack on a US embassy vehicle on January 15 that killed three Lebanese. The paper included the opinion of AUB Professor in political science Ahmad Moussali as saying that "Al-Qaeda is now unleashed in Lebanon and they are here to stay."

  • The New York Times of January 18 published an article entitled "Multimedia Makeover for F.B.I.'s Most Wanted", by Patrick J. Lyons. The paper outlined the role of multimedia in helping F.B.I. achieving their goals. The paper added that at any given time, F.B.I says it is looking for about 12, 000 fugitives from justice, only 10 at a time get the full Most Wanted Treatment, not counting the burea's separate list of most wanted terror suspects. The paper said that the article notes the 16th anniversary of the murder of Former AUB President Malcolm Kerr, by Islamic Jihad militants.

  • Al-Liwa of January 19 published a lengthy report by Walid Zahreddine on the dangerous and contagious diseases that are threatening Lebanon, like Bird Flu, cancer, AIDS etc. The paper included the opinion of several experts including Haifa Khalifeh and Dr. Sima Jeha of Saint-Jude's CCCL affiliated with AUBMC. Khalifeh said that the number of children suffering from cancer is increasing in Lebanon and outside it. Dr. Jeha said that the percentage of treatment of Leukemia reached 90%.

  • Al-Liwa, Al-Bayraq, As-Safir, The Daily Star, An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal and Al-Anwar of January 19 reported on the lecture entitled "Talking with Islamists: An overdue task or an experience in appeasement? Lessons learnt for 30 years of work with conflicts" given by Alastair Crooke at AUB. According to Crooke, most Islamists are not radicals, but individuals who have profound disagreements with the West about issues like modernity and the composition of social life. The lecture was organized by AUB's Issam Fares Institute (IFI) for Public Polices and International Affairs.

  • As-Safir and Oman Observer (Oman) of January of 19 reported on the workshop launched by the Arab Thought Foundation (ATF) and AUB on January 18 through 20, and which is related to research aiming for school-based educational development in Arab Countries . As-Safir said that Provost Peter Heath, Dr. Hala Sader and Dr. Saouma BouJaoude were among the participants.  Oman Observer excerpted the speech of the latter.

Dr. Moussawi said that Lebanon should have political reform in Lebanon and that is what Hizbullah is trying to do.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of January 21 published an article by Nabil Abu Ghanem, reviewing George and Henriette Tohme's book "Lebanon's Photographed Plants", which documents 2600 different kinds of plants available in Lebanon. The paper included an interview with the couple and said that 2607 kinds of plants had been documented in Lebanon as per the Dr. Mustapha Nehme in his book "The Derivative Dictionary for Plants" and as  documented by the Grassy of Priest Post at AUB.

  • As-Safir of January 22 published an interview with the Lebanese Writer Leila Bissat about her new travel book entitled: "About Characters and Stones". The paper said that in the book Leila recalled her trips to very special places of the world that she visited with the Friends of the AUB Museum Society when was the editor-in-chief of their newsletter.

  • Middle Ease Times of January 22 published an article by by Rami Khoury, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at AUB, about the Arab-Israeli struggle since 1948 and the latest Israeli actiions in Palestine, the reasons and the consequences.

  • An-Nahar of January 23 published an article by Samir Atallah about the tense  political, social and economic situation in Lebanon. Atallah expressed his anxiety that Lebanon is going into war with no values. He said that Farid El-Khazen, used to be the chair of AUB Political Sciences department and he listed some historical figures of AUB, such as Charles Malek, Emile Bustani, Gibrail Abdulnour, Antoine Ghattas Karam, Saeb Salam, Adel Osseiran, and Saeed Takeiddine.

  • An-Nahar of January 23 published an article by George Nasif about the importance of the Lebanese Patriarchy and the role it played since the independence day and the foundation of Greater Lebanon. Nasif said that as a reply to an article which he published in An-Nahar, he received comments from different AUB students, who belong to leftist and democratic parties, that there is no fear for AUB's role, freedom and diversity and that they were proud of their election results.

  • An-Nahar of January 23 announced a workshop will be launched by AUBâ??s Journalist Training Program (JTP) about the coverage of elections on February 5-8 and that the workshop will be in Arabic.

  • An-Nahar, Ad-Diyar, Ash-Sharq, Al-Balad, Al-Bayraq, Al-Anwar and Al-Mustaqbal of January 23 reported on the results of the ninth round of the Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship, held as part of the tournament organized by the university Sports Federation. Papers said that AUB beats Jounieh (29/18)), in the first round (16-12). Most of the papers included a picture of Wael Harb of AUB and his group during the game on Amin Abdelnour Field in Bhamdoun.

The papers said that the conference is organized by the Center for Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies (CAMES) at AUB.

  • An-Nahar, As-Safir, Ad-Diyar, Al-Liwa, AL-Bayraq and Al-Anwar of January 24 and Al-Akhbar of January 25 reported on the results of the table tennis, chess and swimming tournament organized by LAU and the Lebanese University Sports Federation. Papers said that in the tennis table contest for women, Joelle Tohme of AUB beat Christi Chalikian of NDU (3/0). Papers added that in the swimming contest Dana Suleiman and Lamya Bawwab of AUB were among the winners.

  • The Central News Agency, As-Safir, the Daily Star, Al-Bayraq and Al-Anwar of January 24 and An-Nahar of January 25 carried the statement by AUB, announcing that the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at AUB is launching a two-year graduate program in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Papers said that this new program, which leads to a Master of Engineering degree, was developed with a $ 700,000 grant from the European Union's TEMPUS program in collaboration with Munich Technical University in Germany, the University of Southampton in Britain, and German Multinational Siemens A.G. The launching ceremony will be held on the same day at West Hall.

  • Middle East on Line (Britain) of January 24 published an article by Rami Khoury, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at AUB, reviewed the content of two books, the Collection of Martin Luther King, jr, and The Miserable of Babel.

  • Arab Times- Al-Hadaf (Kuwait) of January 24 published the translation of an article in English by Graham Fuller. The article said that all the catastrophes of the 20th century were founded by strict secularism. The article talked about George Habash, the founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, saying that he was a Christian Orthodox, a Marxist and studied at AUB. The article was translated by Alfred Asfour.

  • The Daily Star of January 25 published an article by Michael Bluhm about the tense political crisis in Lebanon and the general strike of Thursday January 24 in the country as a result of the opposition calls. The paper included the opinion of several experts including AUB Professor Ahmad Moussalli.

  • The Daily Star, L'Orient-Le Jour, Ash-Sharq, Al-Bayraq, An-Nahar and Al-Anwar, of January 25 reported on the study lead by a team of AUB scientists, which succeeded in discovering that climatic changes and global warming are the main causes behind the outbreak of a cedar needle-eating sawfly, Cephalcia tannourinensis which threatens the cedar forests of Lebanon. The papers said that AUB scientists Nasri S. Kawar and Nabil Nemr, respectively project director and assistant director, had been involved in studying Cephalcia tannourinensis since it first appeared toward the end of 1997, in collaboration with technical experts from Europe. Papers added that the Integrated Management of Cedar Forests in Lebanon Project was funded by the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Environment Program and other Middle Eastern countries and was implemented by AUB, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment.

  • Al-Liwa and Al-Akhbar, of January 25 reported on the general strike in Lebanon called for by the opposition parties. Al-Liwa said that many private universities were obliged to open including AUB since their students had to sit for their exams. Al-Akhbar said that AUB and LAU witnessed a high percentage of attendance.

  • Theater-Denver Post Theater Critic of January 24 published an interview with Tom Sutherland (Colorado State University professor) and Terry Anderson (Associated Press war correspondent) as former Beirut hostages. The two Americans talked about their experiences when chained, recalling how they fought to keep each other alive.  The paper said that Anderson was a dean at AUB, when he was kidnapped by Iranian-backed Shiite Hezbollah terrorists, aiming to force US military forces out of the Lebanese Civil War.

  • Daily Times (Pakistan) of January 25 carried the statement by PM Mohammedian Soomro, mourning his school teacher Abdul Hameed Wayne, who died in Sargodha at the age of 83. The statement or the message was addressed to the daughter of Abdul Hameed, Nurdat Nisar. The paper included a brief biography of Abdul Hameed Wayne saying that he got his MA in Mathematics and English, as well as his MA in education from AUB.

  • Chicagotribune.com of January 25 published an article entitled: "Beirut Political Vacuum Stirs Alarm: Fears mount that frustrations with deadlock could spill into streets", by Liz Sly. The paper described the tense political situation in Lebanon, mainly the pending Presidential issue and the consequences of that on the country and its future. The paper included the opinion of several experts including AUB Political Science Professor Hilal Khashan who said: "If we do not have a president soon, we will run the risk of open warfare".

Ar-Rayess recalled his memories when he came back to Bahrain in the mid-sixties and recounted his incidents with Yousef Chirawi and how the latter talked about Ras-Beirut and his beloved Protestants whom he met at AUB. The paper said that Chirawi graduated from AUB in 1951 and was among the Kuwaitis and Bahrainis who went to Beirut seeking education at AUB in the 1940s and 1950s.

The paper included the opinion of Timur Goksel, a former UN consultant and a lecturer of political science at AUB, as saying that "the last three blasts showed a clear disregard for the civiian life."

  • Middle East Forum (US) of January 27 published an article by Nizar Hamzah, an AUB assistant professor of political science and public administration, about the Islamic fundamentalists, their groups and their respective roles in Lebanon and the region.

  • An-Nahar of January 27 published an interview with two Lebanese inventors, Habib Haddad and Imad Jreidini, about their new invention, the website yamli.com, which helps using the Internet and the typing in Arabic language without a keyboard with Arabic letters. The paper included a brief biography of both saying that Habib Haddad, 27 years old, graduated from AUB with a degree in CCE before leaving to Boston and pursuing his MA in South California. The paper said that both Jreidini, who is a PHD holder from MIT and Haddad contributed in founding the Internet Network Lebanese Entrepreneur and Technology (INLET) in 2005.   • An-Nahar and the Daily Star of January 28 carried AUB Suleiman S. Olayan School of Business announcement regarding the acceptance of applications for its EMBA program (spring 2008 and fall 2008-09).

  • Middle East Online of January 28 published an article entitled " The Tragic Political Geography of Fleeing" by Rami Khoury, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at AUB. Khoury reported on the latest Israeli attacks on Gaza, criticizing the US policy towards the Gaza situation. Khoury noted: " It is ironic but not unexpected that 3500 years after the Hebrews fled their dismal life in Egypt and escaped to freedom across the miraculously stilled Red Sea, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians should be fleeing the modern day descendants of the Hebrews."

  • An-Nahar of January 29 announced that a workshop will be launched by AUB's Journalist Training Program (JTP) about the coverage of elections on February 5-8. The workshop will be in Arabic.

  • An-Nahar of January 29 announced that a piano recital by Walid Howrani will be held at Assembly Hall on January 31. The event is organized by AUB Alumni Association.

  • Al-Liwa, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Bayraq, Al-Anwar, Ad-Diyar, Ash-Sharq, An-Nahar and L'Orient Le Jour of January 29 reported on the results of the tenth round of the Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship, saying that LAU had won the championship. Papers added that AUB ranked the third in the contest scoring 8 points.

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of January 29 announced that Indian professor Ramachandra Guha will give a lecture at West Hall on January 31, and that the lecture will be entitled : "How the world's largest democracy forged national unity from diversity: Reflections from India". The paper said that the event is organized by Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs in cooperation with the Embassy of India in Beirut.

  • Al-Anwar of January 29 reviewed the content of the book "Gabby Iskandar Haddad: Fourty Roses for a Crazy Love", which was published by AUST Publication Division. The book included the memoir of the well-known Lebanese Poet Gaby Iskandar Haddad. The paper said that Haddad was born in Beirut in 1925, from a rich father (Iskandar, the owner of Haddad Bank). The paper also added that Gaby studied Engineering at AUB and chose to teach Mathematics and English for a period of his life, before starting his practice of journalism.

  • Al-Liwa of January 29 reported on the verdict declared by Beirut Criminal Court, upholding the innocence of Hassan Mohammad As-Salamah (Syrian) , who was accused of killing Dr. Asaad Ghandour. Dr. Ghandour was found injured (hit on his head) in his clinic in Corncihe Mazraa, and was transferred to AUBMC ER, in a Coma.

  • Arabianbusiness.com of January 29 reported that AUBMC has formally received full accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI) on January 2. The site published parts of the congratulations letter addressed to Dr. Nadim Cortas, AUB's VP for Medical Affairs and Dean of Faculty of Medicine, by JCIA Executive Director Ann K. Jacobson.

  • Arabianbsuiness.com of January 29 carried the announcement by Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR), declaring its offer of grants ($ 350 000) for two teams of Collaborative Researchers from Middle East Region, under the Collaborative Research Program.  The site said that the co-investigators for the first research grant are Dr. Rose-Mary Boustany, chair of the Abu Haidar Neuroscience Research Institute, AUBMC, and Dr. Susan Cotman, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and member of the Center for Human Genetic Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. The project is under the titled " Galactosylceramide as Potential Treatment for Juvenile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis."
