Al-Markazia of May 1 reported that the American University of Beirut is hosting a conference to launch AUB Issam Fares Institute's (IFI) new research report entitled, "How Much Does Smoking Cost Lebanon? An Estimation of the Economic Impacts of Tobacco Consumption." The paper said that IFI, in collaboration with the AUB Tobacco Control Research Group, are organizing the event. The Daily Star of May 5 and Terra Net of May 6 published a political piece commenting on Lebanon's current municipal elections arguing that "polls deepen sectarian leaders’ hold on fiefdoms." The Daily Star of May 5 published an article by John Donohue on the forthcoming October 2010 Catholic Bishops and Patriarchs of the Middle East meeting that will convene in Rome for a Synod to discuss the problems of the Middle East region as they affect the church. The paper said that Donohue, s.j. is a Professor at Saint Joseph’s University and has taught at Georgetown, the American University of Beirut, and the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts.

Terra Net and The Daily Star of May 12 reported on a research project entitled, “The Current Status of Academic Women in the Middle East: Scientific Analysis for Human Resource Policy Development," by three professors from the American University of Beirut’s Suliman S. Olayan School of Business: Charlotte Karam, Lama Moussawi, and Fida Afiouni. The paper said that the study tackles the problem that women who are well-educated, and who hold PhDs from prestigious universities, often fail to make promotion in the Middle East. Terra Net and The Daily Star of May 13 reported that Makram Bou Nassar, acting deputy director at the Foreign Affairs Department in the Central Bank of Lebanon announced that bank deposits in Lebanon grew by 24 percent to exceed $103 billion in January 2010 and $105 billion in March of the same year. The Daily Star of May 14 reported that three children with severe health problems have been offered help by the Korean Battalion of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as part of its project to provide medical care for people with limited income.
