AUBMC 2020 Vision

  • Al-Bayraq, Al-Anwar, L’Orient Le Jour, and Al-Mustaqbal of March 30 and An-Nahar of April 1 reported on a study conducted by professors Fida Afiouni and Charlotte Karam, and research assistant Hussein El-Hajj from the Olayan School of Business at the American University of Beirut, and funded by the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research. The study examined weaknesses and strengths of human resources management in the Arab banking sector.

  • Al-Akhbar and The Daily Star of April 1 and An-Nahar of April 2 reported on a lecture given at the American University of Beirut by Dr. David Malone, the president of Canada’s International Development Research Center, in which he argued that corruption and absence of democracy are not necessarily obstacles to economic growth.

  • The Daily Star of April 1 reported that the Lebanese Navy will have a fully functioning radar system capable of monitoring the entire coastline by the end of the summer thanks to assistance from German experts and soldiers who have helped train the Lebanese Navy. The paper quoted the German Ambassador to Lebanon Birgitta Siefker-Eberle on the matter and said she is an AUB almuna.

  • Al-Liwa’ and Ad-Diyar of April 1 reported that the American University of Beirut will be hosting a track and field tournament organized by the Lebanese union for the sport and United Sports of Lebanon.

  • Al-Anwar, As-Safir, Al-Mustaqbal , An-Nahar, Al-Bina’, and Ad-Diyar of April 2 and An-Nahar of April 5 reported on a study conducted by the National Council for Scientific Research in collaboration with the American University of Beirut and the University of Saint Joseph on tectonic movements in Lebanon. The study was funded by the French government through its Libris program.

  • As-Safir, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa’, and Ad-Diyar of April 2 reported on the endowment of a scholarship at AUB commemorating late Mohamad S. Dimashkieh. The Mohamad S. Dimashkieh Endowed Scholarship Fund at the American University of Beirut was started by his family in his memory following his tragic death in a car crash.

  • An-Nahar of April 3 reported that the American University of Beirut and the Lebanese University will be competing in the final game of the university futsal competition organized by AUST.

  • Al-Anwar and An-Nahar of April 4 reported that AUB professor Ziad al-Hafez participated in a seminar on economic ethics in Islam and Christianity organized by Pertinence magazine for scientific research of the Antonia University.

  • The Daily Star of April 4 reported on a lecture at the American University of Beirut entitled, “Which role for Islam in the Era of Arab revolutions” given by Tariq Ramadan, professor of Islamic studies at Oxford University.

  • Al-Liwa’ of April 4 reported on the results of the university futsal championship in which the American University of Beirut participated.

  • Al-Anwar, Al-Liwa’, An-Nahar, Al-Jumhuriyya, and Ad-Diyar of April 5 reported that the Saudi rugby team won the under 16 Rugby Middle East Championship that took place at the AUB between March 20 and April 2.

  • As-Safir of April 5 reported that Majed Zougheib will perform a theatrical piece entitled, “Hurr” at AUB following an invitation by the university’s drama and Arab cultural clubs.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of April 5 reported that Ibsar, the Nature Conservation Center for Sustainable Futures at the American University of Beirut, launched the "Nature Conversation" program, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation.

  • Al-Liwa’ and Al-Bayraq of April 5 reported that the AUB Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs is holding a conference on factors defining sexual expression among Arab youth in the region on April 6 and 7 in collaboration with the Goethe Institute.

  • Al-Afkar of April 6 reported on a lecture organized by the Russian Cultural Center in Beirut given by one of the first Soviet Cosmonauts Georgi Mikhailovich Grechko entitled, “First in Space”. The event was organized coordination with the AUB Office of Communications.

  • Al-Anwar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa’, An-Nahar, Al-Jumhuriyya, Al-Bina’, Ad-Diyar, and Al-Bayraq of April 7 reported on the fifteenth round of the Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship in which was won by the American University of Beirut.

  • As-Safir and The Daily Star of April 7 and Al-Akhbar and An-Nahar of April 8 reported that the AUB Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute, launched a two-day conference entitled, “Youth, Sexuality, and Self-Expression in the Arab World” on April 6.

  • As-Safir, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar, and An-Nahar of April 7 and Al-Bina’ of April 8 reported that the American University of Beirut will be hosting a track and field tournament organized by the Lebanese union for the sport and United Sports of Lebanon.

  • Middle East Online, Zawya, Naharnet, and iloubnan.info of April 7 and Peninsula Online of April 8 published a political piece commenting on the uprisings taking place in the Arab world, arguing that “as popular revolts continue to shake the Arab world, the political stalemate in Lebanon is unlikely to end soon because key players Syria and Saudi Arabia are busy on other fronts.” AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan said, “The situation is very tense in the region and everyone is waiting to see how the political landscape is going to change.”

  • The Daily Star and Zawya of April 8 reported on a lecture given at AUB by AUB professor of political studies Karim Makdisi during the “Engaging Change in the Middle East” discussion panel.

  • Al-Jumhuriyya and Al-Bina’ of April 8 reported that the American University of Beirut ranked second in the footsall competition organized by AUST.

  • The Daily Star of April 8 reported on the stand up comedy shows taking pace at the Casino du Liban and said that stand up comedy was born in Lebanon at the American University of Beirut Outdoors of 2003.

  • As-Safir and Al-Liwa’ of April 9 and Al-Anwar of April 11 published an in memoriam piece for Asaad Nasser who taught mathematics and statistics at the American University of Beirut.

  • Al-Liwa’ of April 9 published a profile of late Asaad Naser who taught mathematics and statistics at the American University of Beirut from 1950-55.

  • As-Safir, Al-Akhbar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa’, An-Nahar, and Ad-Diyar of April 11 and Al-Bina’ of April 12 reported on the track and field tournament held at the American University of Beirut sports facilities, which was organized by the Lebanese union for the sport and United Sports of Lebanon.

  • As-Safir of April 12 reported that AUB professor Jad Chaaban will be giving a lecture entitled, “The Bill of the Lebanese Sectarian System.” The lecture is organized by the AUB Secular Club and the Human Rights and Peace Club.

  • Al-Liwa’ of April 12 reported that AUBMC professor Abdel Fattah al-Masri lectured on rheumatic arthritis at the Safadi Cultural Center in Tripoli. The lecture was organized by the Rotary Club, Tripoli.

  • The American University of Beirut Medical Center announces its new AUBMC 2020 vision on April 12:
