  • 14 March, Al-Liwa', As-Safir, and Al-Akhbar of December 2 announced the AUB University Student and Faculty Committee (USFC) elections were postponed until Wednesday December 3 since a quorum was not present.

  • The Central News Agency, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, An-Nahar, The Daily Star, Al-Balad, and Al-Anwar of December 2 announced that AUB celebrated on December 1 the 142nd anniversary of its founding on December 3, 1866. The papers said that during the ceremony, which took place at Assembly Hall, Professor Huda Zurayk, former dean of AUB's Faculty of Health Sciences, was the keynote speaker. The paper also said that the three recipients of the Founders' Day Student Essay competition were announced during the ceremony. Paul Ramia, the winner of the first prize, read his essay during the ceremony.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of December 2 reported on the book reading session organized by the German Arab Encounter, a joint project between the Goethe Institute and the Safadi Foundation, which entails reading excerpts from the book "The Old Child" authored by German writer Jenny Erpenbeck. The paper said that AUB professor of Arabic Asaad Khairallah moderated the session.

  • As-Safir of December 2 announced that the insurance company Med Gulf and Bankers Insurance have suspended their medical insurance contracts with AUB Medical Center due to the increase of billing fees at the hospital.

  • An-Nahar of December 2 reported on the inauguration of the "Seeds of Today Hope for Tomorrow" campaign at the National Orthodox School in the village of Sheikh Taba, Akkar. The campaign, organized by AUB's Center for Nature Conservation and Sustainable Futures IBSAR, will plant 1300 trees in numerous villages in Akkar, North Lebanon.

  • The Daily Star of December 3 published an article by staff writer Nicholas Kimbrell in which he describes his experience while running the Beirut Marathon on November 30. The author mentions that he had to run past AUB to Downtown Beirut during the race.

  • Al-Akhbar of December 2 published an article discussing the recent graffiti on the streets of Hamra and next to AUB saying the Lebanese youth support Disney's character Mickey Mouse, following a recent fatwa by a Saudi sheikh demanding the killing of this cartoon character.

  • An-Nahar of December 3 carried the announcement by AUB that a memorial service in honor of late AUB Trustee Kamal Al-Shair will be held on the same afternoon at Assembly Hall.

  • The Daily Star of December 3 reported on the recent AUB Olayan School of Business Salim Kheireddine/Al Mawarid Bank lecture for fall 2008 by John A. Quelch, entitled "Greater Good: How Good Marketing Makes for Better Democracy," given on December 1. The paper said that John A. Quelch is Senior Associate Dean and Lincoln Filene Professor of Business Administration Harvard Business School.

  • www.cyberia.com and the Central News Agency of December 4 reported on the lecture given by Harvard Business School Associate Dean John A. Quelch on December 1 at AUB on the role marketing could potentially play in politics--as it does in the private sector. The paper said that the lecture, entitled "Greater Good: How Good Marketing Makes for Better Democracy," was organized by AUB's Olayan School of Business and was given at Bathish Auditorium.

  • The Central News Agency of December 4 carried the announcements by the AUB that Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at AUB Majid Fakhry will be giving a lecture entitled "Dialogue of Civilizations: Islam and the West." The paper said that the lecture is organized by the Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies and the Department of Philosophy. The paper also announced that the second annual commemoration of the passing away of poet Jawdat Haidar will be held at Assembly Hall on December 4 and that this event is organized by the Anis Makdisi Program in Literature.

  • The Daily Star of December 4 published a political piece discussing the significance of the recent visit of Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun to Damascus to meet the Syrian politicians and president Bashar Assad. The paper quoted AUB professor and chair of political studies Hilal Khashan as saying that recent polls show that support for Aoun has plummeted in Kisirwan following this visit.

  • As-Safir, Al-Akhbar, and Al-Liwa' of December 4 reported that the Vice President for AUB's University Student and Faculty Council was elected and he belonged to the No Borders (Bila Hudud) leftist party.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, Al-Balad, and L'Orient Le Jour of December 6 reported that a few AUB faculty were among the participants in a in a conference organized by the Industrial Research Institute and the Lebanon Soft-Shore company on enhancement and modernization of the industrial sector in Lebanon.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of December 6 reported on the illustrated lecture by historian Nina Jidejian entitled "Beirut, City of Contrasts." The paper said that the lecture was followed by a signature session of Jidejian's new book Beirut, City of Contrasts.

  • The Daily Star of December 6 reported on the election of Hisham Tohme as Vice President for University Student and Faculty Council at AUB. The paper said that Tohme belongs to the AUB leftist student group Bila Hudud (no frontiers).

  • Al-Mustaqbal and Al-Anwar of December 7, and L'Orient-Le Jour and the Daily Star of December 11 carried the announcement by the American University of Beirut that the US 39th president Jimmy Carter will be lecturing at Issam Fares Hall on December 12. The papers said that the title of his lecture, that is organized by the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy, is "30 years after Camp David: A memo to the Arab World, Israel and the Quartet," and is part of the Issam Fares Institute Bill and Sally Hambrecht Distinguished Peacemakers Lecture series.

  • Al-Anwar of December 7 published an interview with Omar Fadel, president of the Arab Cultural Club. In the interview, Fadel describes the early activities of the club the first of which was an Arabic book fair held in West Hall in 1956.

  • An-Nahar of December 8 reported on the lecture given by Harvard Business School Associate Dean John A.   • Al-Liwa' of December 8 reported that AUB participated in the roaming exhibit of Lebanese private universities held in Hasbayya. The paper said that the exhibit was organized by the Lebanese Forum of Private Universities.

  • Ad-Diyar of December 8 reported that Paul Marcus, a professor at AUB, gave a lecture at a conference in Istanbul on the issue of money laundring in the Arab world. The paper said that the lecture was organized by the Arab Banks Federation.

  • Al-Bayraq of December 8 reported on second annual commemoration of the passing away of poet Jawdat Haidar. The paper said that the event, held at Assembly Hall on December 4, was organized by the Anis Makdisi Program in Literature. The paper also said that during the ceremony prizes for the best Jawdat Haydar essay were distributed.

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of December 8 and December 12, and An-Nahar of December 11 carried the announcement by AUB containing the schedule for Christmas concerts at Assembly Hall. The paper said that the concerts include: Fayha Choir on December 12, AUB Choir on December 15 and 16, Ayadina concert on December 19, and Hamazkayin Cultural and Educational Society concert on December 21.

  • Al-Anwar of December 8, and As-Safir of December 11 carried the announcement by AUBMC clarifying the recent conflict with two insurance companies.

  • An-Nahar of December 11 reported on the Oriental and classical music concert by Edgar Aoun and his choir given at Assembly Hall on December 5. The paper said that the concert was presented by the Orthodox Youth Movement, under the auspices of Archbishop Elias.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, and Al-Bayraq of December 11 published an AUB obituary  for professor of urology and surgeon Dr. Kamal Hamadeh, who passed away on December 6.

  • Al-Liwa' of December 11 and the Daily Star of December 12 published an article featuring the AUB Center for Nature Conservation and Sustainable Future, IBSAR. The papers surveyed its mission, current activities, and history.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of December 11 carried the announcement by the Society of Friends of the AUB Museum whose children program is holding an event around the theme of masks across the ages. The announcement also included the Museum's forthcoming Christmas Exhibit on December 11 and 12.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', As-Safir, Al-Anwar, and Ash-Sharq of December 12 announced that the Lebanese President Michel Suleiman received AUB's newly appointed President Peter Dorman and discussed with him recent issues pertaining to the University.

  • Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', As-Safir, Al-Bayraq, and Al-Anwar of December 12 carried the announcement by AUB that three new members were elected to join the University's Board of Trustees. The papers said that the new members are Eisa El-Eisa, MP Saad Rafic Hariri, and Riad Burhan Kamal.

  • Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Akhbar, and Al-Anwar of December 12 reported that Lebanese Minister of Education Bahia Hariri received a delegation from AUB's Zaki Nassif Music Program and discussed with them the possibility of starting an annual choral competition among schools.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of December 12 carried the announcement by AUB that Ayadina foundation is holding a benefit Christmas concert on December 19 at Assembly Hall featuring the IC Senior Choir, the IC little Cherubs, and the ACS Saxophone Quartet. The paper said that every ticket sold entitles a sick and/or needy child to attend the concert, and that all proceeds go to Ayadina and Toufoula associations.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', As-Safir, Al-Bayraq, The Daily Star, Al-Anwar, and Ash-Sharq of December 13 reported on the lecture given by the 39th US president Jimmy Carter at Issam Fares Hall on December 12. The papers said that the title of his lecture, organized by the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy, was "30 years after Camp David: A memo to the Arab World, Israel and the Quartet," and was part of the Institute's Bill and Sally Hambrecht Distinguished Peacemakers Lecture series. The papers also said that his lecture at AUB was part of his five-day visit in Lebanon in which he was investigating the possibility of sending a delegation from the Carter Center to monitor the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Lebanon.

  • An-Nahar and The Daily Star of December 13 carried the announcement by AUB that three new members were elected to join itts Board of Trustees. The papers said that the new members are Eisa El-Eisa, MP Saad Rafic Hariri, and Riad Burhan Kamal.

  • Al-Akhbar of December 13 published an article featuring the recent conflict between various hospitals in Lebanon, including AUBMC, and medical insurance companies. The papers said that as a result of the conflict many contracts between the two have been annulled.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of December 13 published a review of Anissa Rafeh's newly published book Miss Guided: How to Step into the Lebanese Glam Lane, whose protagonist is a Lebanese American women who traveled to Lebanon to pursue a degree in political studies at AUB.

  • Al-Akhbar of December 15, and Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, and Al-Akhbar of December 16 reported that 14 student clubs at AUB have started a solidarity campaign with the people of Gaza and against the Israeli blockade on the city. The papers said that the campaign included a minute of silence in front of AUB's Main Gate on Monday at 12:30 pm, and screening of a series of movies raising awareness on the dire conditions at the occupied territories.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', L'Orient Le Jour, and Al-Anwar of December 16 reported on the Human Rights Day 2008 held at AUB's Issam Fares Hall and organized by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Middle East. The papers said that the event celebrated the 60th year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - Dignity and Justice for All under the theme "In Their Words."

  • An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Akhbar, The Daily Star, and Al-Anwar of December 16 and Al-Liwa' of December 18 announced that AUB's fifth-year architecture student Haig Papazian won the 2008 Fawzi Azar Architectural Award for outstanding academic achievement in design, after participating in a competition to design an architectural museum for Beirut. The papers said that Nabil F. Azar, General Manager of Builders Design Consultants, announced the winner during a dinner reception he held at the Biel to celebrate 35 years of his company's "Passion and Commitment to Architecture."

  • An-Nahar of December 16 reported on the closure of Ras Beirut bookshop on Bliss street after 50 years of service. The paper said that it was founded by late Dr. Antoine Ghattas Karam, professor of Arabic literature at the American University of Beirut, in 1949.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, Al-Balad, Al-Akhbar, and Al-Anwar of December 16 announced that AUB will compete against the University of Balamand on Saturday during the fourth round of the Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of December 16 carried the announcement by AUB containing the schedule for Christmas concerts at Assembly Hall. The paper said that the program includes: Ayadina's concert on December 19, and Hamazkayin's concert on December 21.

The papers said that the lecture was organized by the Society of Friends of the AUB Museum and was followed by a signature session of Jidejian's book "Beirut, City of Contrast."

  • Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, Al-Akhbar, Al-Anwar, and Ash-Sharq of December 18 reported on the luncheon held in honor of patients at the Children Cancer Center in Lebanon at the Lebanese Presidential Palace. The papers said that the lunch was held under the auspices of Lebanese first Lady Wafa Michel Suleiman and it celebrated the holidays.

  • Al-Liwa' and Al-Anwar of December 18, and An-Nahar of December 19 reported on the annual gala dinner organized by the Lebanese South Heritage Club at AUB at As-Saha restaurant. The papers said that the dinner was held under the auspices of political member of Hizbullah party Ghaleb Abu Zaynab.

  • Al-Bayraq and Al-Anwar of December 18, and Al-Mustaqbal and Ad-Diyar of December 19, and Al-Balad of December 20 announced that AUB participated in the Haigazian University Tournament for Table Tennis which was held under the supervision of the Lebanese Universities Sports League.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, Al-Balad, and Al-Anwar of December 19 reported that that an AUBMC oncologist-hematologist, Dr. Ali Bazarbachi, was named Laureate of the French National Academy of Medicine 2008 and received the Prix Aimee et Raymond Mande for his work on targeted therapy on human leukemia.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, and As-Safir of December 19 that the AUB Choir and Choral Society will participate in the Musiqa al-'Alam (World Music) music festival which is organized by Solidere and the Beirut Association for Social Development.

  • As-Safir of December 19 reported that a group of AUB students participated in a peace march in support of Gaza while protesting the Israeli blockade that has kept all kinds of vital resources from reaching civilians.

  • As-Safir of December 19 reported that the Lebanese University Sports League announced the schedule for the new season in AUB will compete in soccer.

  • The Daily Star of December 19, and Al-Mustaqbal of December 22 reported that PepsiCo Lebanon donated $100,000 to the Children Cancer Center in Lebanon (CCCL). The papers said that present at the check donation were Chair of Pepsi Lebanon Walid Assaf and Chair of the CCCL Board of Trustees Saleem Zeenni,  Vice Chair Ali Ghandour, and Treasurer Farouk Jabre.

  • An-Nahar and As-Safir of December 20, and Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat (KSA) of December 22 reported on the Eleventh Science and Math Education Conference held at AUB on December 6. The paper said that the conference was organized by the Science and Math Education Center (SMEC) at AUB and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and sponsored by UNESCO-Cairo, and that it has become a landmark for regional educators, attracting over 400 participants and speakers, this year, from the United States, Europe, and the Arab World.

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of December 20 published a review of AUB professor of graphic design Zeina Maasri's newly published book "Off the Wall: Political Posters of the Lebanese Civil War".

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar, Al-Anwar, and Al-Balad of December 21, and Al-Bayraq, Ash-Sharq, and L'Orient Le Jour of December 22 reported that a group of students from the AUB visited the general secretary of the Lebanese Free Patriotic Movement and MP Michel Aoun to discuss the forthcoming Lebanese parliamentary elections.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar, Al-Anwar, www.tayyar.org, Dar Al-Hayat (Britain), Al-Qabas (Kuwait), Al-Bawaba (Britain), Jaridat Al-Bayan (UAE), Al-Rai (Kuwait), Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat (KSA), and Al-Awan (Kuwait) of December 21, and L'Orient-Le Jour of December 22 reported that an AUB student was taken into police custody after his bike, on which a video camera was installed, was found parked across from MP Walid Jumblat's house on Clemenceau Street.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of December 21, and An-Nahar and Al-Anwar of December 22 reported that the AUB Choir and Choral Society participated in the Musiqa al-'Alam (World Music) music festival which was organized by Solidere and the Beirut Association for Social Development at Down Town Beirut.

  • The Daily Star of December 22 reported on a workshop developed and implemented by AUB's Regional External Programs (REP) and funded by the US State Department aimed to help displaced Iraqi professionals in Lebanon to find jobs.

  • Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', As-Safir,  Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, Al-Balad, Al-Akhbar, Al-Anwar, and L'Orient Le Jour of December 23 reported on the results of the fifth season of the Rugby League Beirut Bank Championship in which the AUB team lost to Balamand University. The papers also said that AUB is due to play against Jounieh Team on Bhamdoun stadium in the sixth season.

  • Ad-Diyar of December 23 reported that two students from Haigazian University won the first and third prizes in the Jawdat Haidar Essay Competition respectively. The paper said that they were given the awards during a ceremony at AUB, organized by the AUB Anis Makdisi Program in Literature.

  • L'Orient Le Jour and the Daily Star of December 23 reported on the farewell reception for Ras Beirut bookshop which was closing its doors for good due to a planned demolition of its building. The paper said that many AUB faculty and staff attended the reception.

  • The Daily Star of December 23 and L'Orient-Le Jour of December 27 published an editorial featuring the social phenomenon of Lebanese women "racing" for marriage when male bachelors visit Lebanon for the holidays. The paper quoted director of AUB's Center for Behavioral Science Samir Khalaf as saying "This is the time when many young men come back for the holidays and the women want to find that catch."

  • Al-Liwa' and Al-Mustaqbal of December 24 and An-Nahar of December 27 carried the announcement by the AUB of the death of Tom Weaver, an English and music teacher at International College, and an organist who performed on many occasions at AUB's Assembly Hall.

  • Al-Akhbar and Al-Anwar of December 24 and Al-Mustaqbal of December 27 announced that AUB issued its latest issue of the university magazine Main Gate which featured arts at the University.

  • Al-Liwa' and Al-Akhbar of December 27 carried the announcement by AUB that it is holding the inauguration of Pierre Aboukhater (Fahed) Ambulatory Care Center and the Graham and Meredith Rooke Wound Care Center on Monday, December 29, 2008 at 10:00 am at Pierre Aboukhater Building, Clémenceau Street.
