The Daily Star, Al-Mustaqbal, and As-Safir of February 1 reported that the results of a study conducted by research teams at the American University of Beirut and Saint Joseph University entitled, “Beirut Air Quality Index” were announced. The study presented data gathered from across the capital during a two-year period measuring the excess in air pollution in the city.

The Daily Star of February 2 published a political piece commenting on the recent uprising in Egypt. It quoted an AUB student named Tarek as saying, “The Egyptian people are unanimously in agreement, but in Lebanon the Cedar Revolution’s components immediately fell apart.”

AUB professor of economics Marcus Marktanner said, “I think [the Egyptian trade freeze] is a short-term issue and not major … it’ll become an issue if Egypt becomes a failed state or something similar.”

The Daily Star of February 3 published a political piece arguing that Lebanon would violate international law and could face U.N. sanctions if Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati’s government withdrew from agreements with the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL). Sari Hanafi, professor of transitional justice at the American University of Beirut, said, “Any Cabinet led by Mikati would seek to end Lebanon’s collaboration with the STL.”

The title of the book is Al Jahiz: A Muslim Humanist for Our Time.

Al-Anwar, Ad-Diyar, L’Orient Le Jour, and Al-Mustaqbal of February 8 reported on the memorial service held in honor of Abdallah Lahoud who passed away in a recent plane crash in the Sulaimanieh region of Kurdistan in Iraq. Lahoud received his higher education at the American University of Beirut.

The Daily Star, As-Safir, and An-Nahar of February 12 reported on the news conference by Zohair Berro, the head of the Consumer’s Lebanon. He said that in late November, his group gathered 23 samples of fruits and vegetables from markets in Beirut and its suburbs in line with adopted scientific standards. Only one out of the 23 samples was found to contain excessive traces of pesticides. The association analyzed water samples, taken from eight wells used for irrigation, in cooperation with labs from the American University of Beirut.
