  • An-Nahar of June 2 announced that the American University of Beirut will be hosting a lecture by Najib Sawiris on "The Role of Economic Legends in National and Regional Politics in the Arab World” on June 2 as part of the Beirut Spring Festival 2010.   • Al-Liwa' and Al-Anwar of June 2 reported that the general manager of the Azm Educational Congregation, Abdallah Mikati, was presented by the AUB Regional External Programs the scholastic curriculum of the Azm School of Tripoli.

  • Al-Jarida Newspaper, The Daily Star, and Al-Mustaqbal of June 2 published an article on the forthcoming Byblos International Festival 2010 and said that the group Mashrou' Leila, a band that formed at AUB in 2008, will be performing on July 9.

  • Terra Net and The Daily Star of June 3 published a political piece arguing that the Freedom Flotilla fallout should keep chances slim for any conflict between Lebanon and Israel in the short term, "while the assault and the resulting outcry are also providing a boost for Hizbullah at home and in the region." The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies, Hilal Khashan, as saying, "Israel must secure U.S. approval for any incursion against Lebanon, and the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama will not let Israel move against Hizbullah because of its interests in promoting diplomatic initiatives on Iran’s disputed nuclear program and pushing the Israeli-Palestinian peace process."

  • Al-Mustaqbal and Al-Anwar of June 4 reported that the National Arab American Association is holding its 24th international medical conference between June 26 and July 2. They said that the conference is organized in collaboration with the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine.

  • As-Safir, An-Nahar, Al-Anwar of June 4 and Al-Liwa' and Al-Balad of June 5 reported on the start of the conference on classical Arabic music to be held at Antonia University on June 4 and 5. The papers said that the AUB Zaki Nassif Program in Music is collaborating on organizing the conference.

  • As-Safir and Al-Akhbar of June 4, Almustaqbal.org and Bint Jbeil of June 5, and Al-Balad of June 7 reported that AUBMC Professor of Endocrinology Sami Azar presented the results of the global International Diabetes Management Study at a the 13th Annual Conference of the Lebanese Society for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Lipids. The study covered 1,630 Lebanese patients and 20,730 patients worldwide and found that diabetic patients in Lebanon do not comply with recommended lifestyles and treatments.

  • Ahrar News, Al-Markazia, Lebanese Kataeb, and 14 March  of June 5 reported on a press conference held by the Lebanese Minister of Education Hasan Mneimneh in which he discussed preparations for the forthcoming official exams. The papers said that the Saint Jude Children Cancer Center in Lebanon at AUBMC will be a test center for students who are patients with special medical needs.

  • Ahrar News, Almustaqbal.org, Dar Al-Hayat, and Al-Bayraq of June 4 and An-Nahar of June 5 reported that the legislative council signed the petition initiated by the AUB Tobacco Control Research Group in collaboration with Free Life Without Smoking and IndyAct. These groups are circulating the petition ahead of sending it to parliament in hopes that it would sign the law to ban public smoking in Lebanon.

  • Ad-Diyar of June 6 reported on the results of a study conducted at the American University of Beirut that yielded that cigarette smoking costs the state about $327 million a year, roughly $55 million more than the profits made from tobacco sales (local net revenue is estimated to be $271.3 million per year).

  • Al-Bi'a wa'l Tanmiya of June 2010 reported on the 16th Annual Science, Math, and Technology Fair hosted at the American University of Beirut on May 1 and 2.

  • The Daily Star of June 3 published an article featuring the diversity among women in Lebanese society where "the hijab and bikini live side by side." The paper quoted AUB professor of sociology Sari Hanafi as saying, “It is difficult to determine whether or not the coexistence between people from different backgrounds will eventually lead to a clash. As long as more radical factions fail to dominate the public and are kept in check by society and not by the state, tolerance will prevail.”

Suleiman was injured in the attack and is currently recuperating at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.

The papers said that the award was created in 2009 by the American University of Beirut and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to help celebrate and develop future leaders from AUB. The winner is offered an opportunity for a job interview at BCG along with an $11,000 cash prize.

  • The Daily Star of June 7, and Pharmacy Choice, AME Info, and Al-Mustaqbal of June 8 reported that the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Tripoli Government Hospital (TGH). The papers said that through this MOU, AUBMC will afford more training opportunities for its medical students and residents-in-training. Furthermore, this collaboration congruently allows AUBMC physicians to transfer their knowledge and clinical expertise to areas outside of Beirut.

  • Tymat of June 7 published an article discussing the Lebanese Ministry of Finance’s plans to raise the Value Added Tax from 10 percent to 12 to 15 percent and the decision by the General Labor Confederation to protest should the plan be approved. The paper referred to a study prepared by the American University of Beirut which examined how imposing 15 percent VAT would negatively affect low income Lebanese.

  • Now Lebanon of June 8 published an article on rising noise pollution in Lebanon and quoted Raja Abdallah, an environmental and safety engineer and instructor at the American University of Beirut, as saying that "whether at peak or off-peak hours, noise levels throughout the city are alarming.” He added, “While the noisiness Beirutis endure during the day may not necessarily lead to hearing impairment as long as sound levels average 70dB, it is stressful, annoying and can affect work performance."

The paper said that the project was initiated by the Youth Association for the Blind, Mercy Corps, and the Lebanese Physically Handicapped Union.

The papers said that the studies are part of a collaborative effort between the Nutrition and Food Science Department at the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences, and said they were conducted in 1997 and 2008.

  • Al-Akhbar of June 13 and SSNP of June 14 published a review of Patrick Seal's recently published book Riyad Al-Solh wa al-nidal min ajl al istiqlal al-'arabi. The paper said that one of the references made to in the book is Surya Al-Jadida newspaper that is available in microfilm at the library at the American University of Beirut.
