  • www.cyberia.com of June 1 reported on a seminar given at AUB entitled "Arab Sovereign Wealth Funds: Growth, Relevance, and Prospects." The paper said that the seminar was organized by the AUB Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and the Carnegie Middle East Center, and hosted Sven Behrendt, Rami Khouri, Danyel Reiche and Ibrahim A. Warde as panelists.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', Al-Anwar, and The Daily Star of June 2 reported that an Ain Mreisseh street in Ras Beirut has been named after AUB Professor Emeritus Ibrahim Dagher, who had performed the first open-heart surgery in the region in 1958. The papers said that the AUB Faculty of Medicine and the Medical Center celebrated the street dedication on May 30 during a ceremony at the Rafic Hariri School of Nursing.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of June 2 reported on the AUB Zaki Nassif Program in Music concert held at AUB Assembly Hall on May 30 by the Lebanese National Orchestra. The paper said that the concert was conducted by Dr. Walid Gholmieh, the head of the Lebanese National Conservatory. The paper also said that concert commemorated the 5th anniversary of the founding of the program in honor of Lebanese Musician Zaki Nassif.

  • Al-Akhbar of June 2 published an article discussing the health threats of potassium cyanide to be used to remove finger print ink during the forthcoming Lebanese parliamentary elections. The paper quoted AUB professor of chemistry Rabih Sultan as saying "Potassium cyanide is a very dangerous chemical and I am surprised to know that it is still in use."

  • Al-Akhbar of June 2 published an article featuring the student club at AUB called the "Lebanese Heritage Club" in light of the forthcoming Lebanese parliamentary elections.

  • The Daily Star of June 2 reported on a new youth media outlet called Youth Voice or Sawt Ash-Shabab that is being distributed as a supplement to An-Nahar and Al-Akhbar newspapers. The paper said Root Space, a social NGO, is behind Sawt Ash-Shabab which includes students from AUB as active members.

  • The Daily Star of June 2 reported on the recent decision of the government to halt the project of converting Beirut's public gardens of Sanayeh and Sioufi into parking lots and included a quotation by Randa Zaiter, one of the residents of Sanayeh, as saying "If these spaces go, the leafy campus of the American University of Beirut will be the only one left."

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, and Al-Liwa' of June 3, and The Daily Star of June 4 carried AUB's announcement that it will award this year's honorary doctorates to four distinguished recipients: Kuwaiti economist Abdalatif Yousef Al-Hamad, Egyptian space researcher Farouk El-Baz, Lebanese singer Majida El Roumi, and Algerian radiologist Elias Zerhouni. The papers said that AUB will award the doctorates at a ceremony in Assembly Hall at noon on Commencement Day, Saturday June 27, 2009.

  • An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Bayraq, Al-Balad, Al-Anwar, and Al-Anwar of June 3, and Al-Liwa' of June 4 announced the final results of the college tennis championship in Lebanon. The papers said that AUB student Alia Khadem lost to Rola Maalouf of the Lebanese University during the tournament's women's semi finals.

  • Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', and Al-Akhbar of June 3, and The Daily Star of June 4 reported on a seminar given at AUB on June 2 entitled "Rising Temperatures, Rising Tensions: climate change and the risk of violent conflict in the Middle East." The papers said that the seminar was organized by AUB's Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy, IndyAct foundation, and the Danish Embassy in Lebanon, and aimed to launch a new International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) report on climate change and security in the Middle East.

  • Al-Akhbar of June 3 announced the results of the Samir Kassir Contest for Journalistic Freedom of Speech 2009. The paper said that serving on jury for this year's contest was AUB professor of sociology Sari Hanafi.

  • Al-Akhbar of June 3 announced AUB's decision to hold final exams on June 6 and 8 despite the Lebanese government's call to suspend businesses and work on those dates.

  • Al-Akhbar and Al-Awar of June 3, As-Safir of June 4, and An-Nahar of June 5 reported that the Balamand School won the Zaki Nassif Choir Competition which was organized by the AUB Zaki Nassif Program in Music and was held at AUB Assembly Hall.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of June 3 reported on the signing by author Paula Schmit of her recently published AUB master's thesis entitled "Advertised to Death, Lebanese poster boys", at the Virgin Megastore.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of June 4 published the schedule of the Beirut Spring Festival being held in honor of late Lebanese journalist Samir Kassir. The paper said that the festival includes a vocal/piano concert at the AUB Assembly Hall on June 19.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, Al-Anwar, and The Daily Star of June 5 carried the announcement by AUB and International College (IC) of the successful sale of the AUB land on which the IC campus is located to IC by AUB. The papers said that since 1936, the IC campus has maintained its facilities on land owned by the University. They said that with IC now the legal owner of its campus, the College can make capital improvements to its structures that are critical to its success as a 21st century school that attracts and retains top quality students and faculty.

  • As-Safir of June 5 published a political editorial in light of the lecture given by Dr. Azmi Bshara on May 14 entitled: "Palestine an Arab Cause or the Palestinian Problem?" held at AUB's Issam Fares Hall. The paper said that the lecture was organized by the AUB Palestinian Cultural Club that, in commemoration of the 61st anniversary of the NAKBA.

  • The Daily Star of June 5 published a political editorial discussing the fierce parliamentary competition between the 14 Marchcoalition and opposition parties in the Batroun area over two seats during the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Lebanon. The paper quoted AUB student of political studies Jeffery Karam, who is researching elections in Lebanon, as saying "Of course March 14 cannot be sure of having both seats."

  • Al-Anwar of June 6 published an article featuring young musicians in Lebanon including Syrian hip hop singer and musician Nasereddine Sharbaji who is an economics major at AUB.

  • Al-Anwar of June 6 published a eulogy in memory of Helen Khal, a former painting instructor at AUB who was a renowned painter, author, and critic, and who died on May 20 of stroke at a hospital in Ajaltoun. The paper said that Khal started her prolific painting career at the age of 21. The paper also said that she was encouraged by the Lebanese artist Aref Rayess and others to hold her first individual exhibition in 1960 in Galerie Alecco Saab in Beirut. Her other one-woman shows took place at Galerie Trois Feuilles d'Or, Beirut(1965); Galerie Manoug, Beirut (1968); First National Bank, Allentown, Pennsylvania (1969); Kaslik, Lebanon (1970); Contact Art Gallery, Beirut (1972, 1974 and 1975) and at the Bolivar Gallery in Kingston, Jamaica in 1975. Her work also appeared in the Biennales of Alexandria and Sao Paulo.

  • The Daily Star and www.cyberia.com of June 6 published a political editorial reflecting on the possible outcomes of the Lebanese parliamentary elections of June 7 arguing that a unity government might be an outcome of the polls. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies and public administration Hilal Khashan as saying "The trend is to keep Lebanon calm pending developments elsewhere in the region."

  • The Daily Star of June 6 reported on the engagement of Lebanese university students in monitoring forthcoming elections. The paper said that the Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE) has over 2,500 observers, and over half of those are students from Lebanon, and that likewise, the Lebanese Transparency Association (LTA) said that 80 percent of their 79 observers are university students. The paper said that students who will be working with LADE and LTA come from seven schools which include AUB, the Lebanese University, the University of Balamand, and Notre Dame University-Louaize.

  • The Daily Star of June 6 published an article arguing that Lebanon's youth will play a crucial role in shaping the results of the forthcoming Lebanese parliamentary elections. The paper quoted an AUB student named Firas as saying that most people old enough to vote are doing their finals [exams] and hence might not be able to participate.

  • Al-Mustqbal of June 7 reported on the graduation ceremony of the American Community School for the class of 2009. The paper said that the keynote speaker at the ceremony was AUB's new president Peter F. Dorman and that the ceremony took place at AUB's Assembly Hall.

  • www.cyberia.com of June 8 published a political piece commenting on the parliamentary elections of June 7 arguing that preliminary results showed the 8,000 vote lead of the Future Movement in the southern port city of Sidon after thousands of voters flocked into the polling stations on Sunday. The paper quoted Hilal Khashan, head of the department of political studies at the American University of Beirut, as saying "even though certain Sidon constituencies dislike Siniora and the Hariris, Siniora might be able to hold off Saad because of support from the city's poorer residents."

  • As-Safir of June 9 published a letter by the Danish Ambassador to Lebanon Jan Top Christensen in view of a seminar given at the AUB on June 2 entitled "Rising Temperatures, Rising Tensions: climate change and the risk of violent conflict in the Middle East." The paper said that the seminar was organized by AUB's Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy, IndyAct foundation, and the Danish Embassy in Lebanon, and aimed to launch an International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) report on climate change and security in the Middle East.

  • Al-Akhbar of June 9 featured a new research and treatment center at AUBMC dedicated to patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of June 9 announced that AUBMC professor of internal medicine and nephrology Adel Berbari lectured during the conference on hypertension and blood pressure held at the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel, Beirut.

  • The Daily Star and www.cyberia.com of June 9 published a political piece arguing that Christian votes mattered less than expected in recent parliamentary elections. The paper quoted AUB professor and chair of political studies Hilal Khashan as saying "Contrary to expectations, it was not the Christian vote that determined the outcome - it was the Sunni and Shiite voters. It was the Sunni vote that ensured the defeat of the [Free Patriotic Movement head] Michel Aoun electoral list."

  • As-Safir of June 11 ran an opinion piece on the way Lebanese politics is reflected on university campuses in Lebanon including AUB.

  • The Daily Star of June 11 published a political editorial discussing how the Sunni bloc turned Zahle into a March 14 district during the recent Lebanese parliamentary elections of June 7. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Kareem Makdisi as saying "allegations have been made of the government moving voters to Zahle in order to cast their ballot. If this was done immorally but legally, than that's the Lebanese game."

  • Al-Jareeda (Kuwait) and Ar-Rouiah (Kuwait) of June 10 reported that a group of employees from the Kuwait National University are undergoing professional training at AUB.

  • The Jordan Times (Jordan) of June 11 published a political editorial which argued that the results of the recent Lebanese parliamentary elections are unlikely to change the political order in Lebanon. The paper quoted Hilal Khashan, head of the department of political science and public administration at the American University of Beirut, as saying "since the election does not alter the relationship between the blocs [government and opposition], the two sides have no alternative but to cooperate."

Sayegh, MD of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts has been selected as the University's next vice president for Medical Affairs and Raja N. Khuri dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the AUB Medical Center. The papers said that Dr. Sayegh is a Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and holds the Warren E. Grupe and John P. Merrill Chair in Transplantation Medicine at Harvard Medical School. The papers also said that he served as the Director of the Schuster Family Transplantation Research Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston, and that Dr. Sayegh will assume responsibilities from Dr. Nadim Cortas, the current vice president and dean of the Faculty of Medicine, on July 1, 2009.

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of June 12, and Al-Liwa' of June 15 reported that the Center for Behavioral Research at AUB announced the winners of the Michel Chiha Essay competition after each of the three finalists gave an oral presentation on June 11 justifying the themes and contexts of their essay, the first prize winner being AUB student Nicholas Saadeh. The other winners were Ruth Bonazza, Nate George, John Hayden, Paul Ramia, Nicholas Saadeh, and Tareq Tutinji. The papers said that the Center for Behavioral Research in collaboration with the Michel Chiha Foundation had announced late February the essay competition based on the recent publication of one of Chiha's book Palestine: Political Reflections, 1945-1954, and that the competition was open to all AUB students.

  • The Daily Star of June 12 published a political editorial saying that fears of Iran helped swing Christian voters away from Hizbullah during the recent Lebanese parliamentary elections, delivering victory to the March 14 coalition in Lebanon, and that US President Barack Obama's outreach to Muslims lingered in voters' minds. The paper quoted AUB professor and head of political studies department Hilal Khashan as saying that "Aoun's alliance with Hizbullah was extremely difficult to justify for the Christian community."

  • The Daily Star of June 12 reported on the 98th graduation ceremony of the American Community School for the class of 2009 was held on June 5 at AUB's Assembly Hall.. The paper said that the keynote speaker at the ceremony was AUB's new president Peter F. Dorman.

  • Dar Al-Hayat (Britain) of June 12, and An-Nahar of June 15 reported that AUBMC professor of internal medicine and nephrology Adel Berbari lectured during the conference on hypertension and blood pressure, held at the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel, Beirut.

  • Al-Bayraq, Al-Akhbar, and Al-Anwar of June 13, and An-Nahar of June 15 reported on the forthcoming conference to launch the project for promoting health and nutrition in rural Lebanese areas by focusing on communicating methods for enhancing nutritional diversity and managing the environment for research and rural development. The papers said that the conference which will be held on June 19 at AREC is organized by AUB's Center for Nature Conservation and Sustainable Futures (IBSAR). The paper said that the project will be implemented by IBSAR in collaboration with AUB's Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and the Ottawa University in Canada, and is funded by the International Center for Development and Research in Canada.

  • The Daily Star and www.cyberia.com of June 13 published an article featuring the anxieties of the Lebanese youth concerning finding job opportunities in Lebanon and their request of new MPs to create jobs in the country. The papers quoted 18 year old AUB student Bassam Safieddine who is majoring in economics and psychology as saying that he is sharing his colleague's anxieties about finding a job in the country.

  • An-Nahar of June 15 reported on the opera concert organized by AUB's Faculty of Arts and Sciences in tribute to its outgoing Dean Khalil M. Bitar. The paper said that this ceremony featured international opera singer Rima Tawil Makdisi and pianist Olga Bolun and was held at Assembly Hall on June 13.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of June 15 reported that Fay Niewiadomsk,i CEO of the International Consulting and Training Network (ICTN) visited the Children Cancer Center in Lebanon at AUBMC on June 9, 2009 to offer the children story book authored by her in both Arabic and English languages. The paper said that the book is entitled The Secret of the Closed Room.

  • As-Safir of June 15 reported that AUBMC pharmacist Ulfat Usta participated in the three day international medical conference organized by the faculty of medical sciences at the Lebanese University on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, where she presented the medical center's latest developments in pharmaceuticals.

  • Al-Anwar of June 15 reported on the graduation ceremony of International College for the class of 2009 held at AUB's Assembly Hall.
    The Daily Star of June 15 reported on the lack of popularity of bagels in Lebanon and gave the example of a handful of shops in Beirut that sell bagels including Euro Deli on Bliss Street that caters to the AUB community.

  • Saba News Agency (Yemen) of June 15 published an interview with the head of the Institute to Counter Racism and Zionism and Jordanian politician Laith Farhan Shbilat on Arab and regional politics the Arab world. The paper said that Shbilat is an AUB graduate with a BE in 1964.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar, Al-Anwar, and The Daily Star of June 16, and As-Safir of June 17 carried the announcement by the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) at AUB that award-winning Washington Post columnist Nora Boustany has been appointed as Writer-in-Residence Fellow at IFI for the year 2009-10.

  • Al-Liwa' of June 16 reported on the graduation ceremony of International College for the class of 2009, held at AUB's Assembly Hall.

  • Al-Akhbar of June 16 published an article featuring the latest cheating methods among university students in Lebanon and gave the example of an AUB student who offered money to another student to sit for his exam.

  • Al-Anwar of June 16 reported on the forthcoming conference to launch the project for promoting health and nutrition in rural Lebanese areas by focusing on communicating methods for enhancing nutritional diversity and managing the environment for research and rural development. The papers said that the conference will be held on June 19 at AREC.

  • An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Anwar, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, The Daily Star, and The Central News Agency of June 17 reported that AUB announced the establishment of the Georges N. Frem Manufacturing Technologies Hub in its Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. The paper said that the hub is a cluster of engineering laboratories and meeting spaces and will be located on the third floor of the Ray R. Irani Oxy Engineering Complex, which is being built on AUB's lower campus. The paper also said that the site will include a meeting and projects room; mobile robotics and computer vision laboratory; a mechanical design laboratory; a mechatronics laboratory; a design for manufacturing laboratory; a control and robotics Laboratory; an instrumentation laboratory; and an intelligent systems laboratory.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Anwar, Al-Bayraq, and Ash-Sharq of June 17 reported that representatives from AUBMC participated in a medical conference organized by LAU. The paper said that the conference was entitled "Implementing Public and Population Health Principles in Educational Curricula: Current Challenges and Future Direction."

  • Al-Akhbar, Al-Mustaqbal, and Al-Liwa' of June 17 reported that the Saint Jude Children Cancer Center in Lebanon at AUBMC will serve as an Lebanese government examination center for students with special medical needs.

  • The Daily Star of June 17 reported on the six day Beirut Spring Festival held to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the assassination of Samir Kassir. The paper said that one of the festival events included a concert at AUB's Assembly Hall entitled "When the Orient inspires French Opera". The paper said that this event was an evening of operatic recital featuring French baritone Remi Van Sam, accompanied on piano by Mahkame Navabi.

  • Al-Hayat of June 17 and As-Safir of June 18 announced that AUBMC's  Women's Auxiliary will be holding their annual Toy Tea Party on June 18 at Marquand House. The paper said that a scholarship award distribution will take place, and that the program will include musical interludes organized in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Lebanon.

  • An-Nahar of June 18 announced that AUB lecturer of law, Nada Abdelsater-Abusamra, was named recipient of The Rising Stars of Corporate Governance for 2009 award granted by the Millstein Center for Corporate Governance and Performance at the Yale School of Management. The paper said the Abusamra received the award for her proving to be among the "global corporate governance professionals under the age of 40 who are making their mark as outstanding analysts, experts, activists, or managers."

  • An-Nahar of June 20 and Al-Mustaqbal of June 21 reported on the Second OSB-Coca-Cola Marketing Seminar entitled "A Market Amplification Model for Today's Global Consumer Environment." The paper said that the seminar was held at AUB's Bathish Auditorium in West Hall.

  • As-Safir of June 20 carried the invitation by AUBMC Nursing Services department calling to join its team at Issam Fares Hall on June 23, 2009 at 3:00 pm as they will gather for a long-awaited phone call from the American Nurses Credentialing Center to know if AUBMC has achieved Magnet accreditation. The paper said that the Nursing Services department has been working toward achieving this prestigious recognition for six years. The paper also said that only five percent of hospitals in the United States are Magnet facilities.

  • Al-Akhbar of June 20 photo-captioned the AUB student rock band called Mashrou3 Leila after they played at the Roman Baths in Beirut.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of June 21 reported that six AUB students were = awarded cash prizes for winning essays they submitted to the Michel Chiha competition about the late editorialist's newest published compilation. The paper said that the Center for Behavioral Research at AUB announced the winners.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of June 21 reported on a concert held at AUB's Assembly Hall as part of the Beirut Spring Festival held to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the assassination of Samir Kassir.

  • An-Nahar of June 22 published a review of former Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Elie A. Salem's recently published biography entitled My American Bride.

  • Al-Akhbar of June 22 carried the announcement by AUB that its Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service (CCECS) and the Gerhart Center at American University in Cairo (AUC) are holding a public panel discussion on "Civic Engagement in Higher Education and Educating Civic-Minded Citizens." The paper said that key speakers from AUB, AUC, and Portland State University will give the panel discussion on Tuesday June 23 at 1:00 pm. The paper also said that the public panel is a part of a regional four-day workshop that AUB/CCECS and AUC/Gerhart are co-organizing at AUB entitled "Expanding Civic Engagement in Arab Universities: A Peer Learning Workshop for Faculty" under the Ma'an Arab University Alliance for Civic Engagement.

  • Al-Bayraq of June 22 announced that AUB lecturer of law, Nada Abdelsater-Abusamra, was named recipient of The Rising Stars of Corporate Governance for 2009 award granted by the Millstein Center for Corporate Governance and Performance at the Yale School of Management. The paper said the Abusamra received the award for her proving to be among the "global corporate governance professionals under the age of 40 who are making their mark as outstanding analysts, experts, activists, or managers."

  • Trade Arabia (Bahrain) of June 23 reported that the American University of Ras Al Khaimah has selected UniversiTools university software for its comprehensive student information system (SIS) and robust scheduling modules. The paper said that regional members of the UniversiTools user community include AUB and the American University of Dubai in the UAE.

  • An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Mustaqbal, The Daily Star, Al-Liwa', and Al-Bayraq of June 23 carried the announcement by AUB of its establishment of the Nadim Anis Makdisi Memorial Scholarship at Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs with a $200,000 dollar donation by Nadim Makdisi's son Richard Makdisi. The papers said that the scholarship will help host an Arab or foreign journalist to give the annual Nadim Anis Makdisi memorial lecture and will fund research in information and media. The papers also said that the first memorial lecture will be organized by AUB's Issam Fares Institute in fall 2009-10.

  • An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, and Al-Balad of June 23 reported that the Bank of Beirut Rugby League team will be traveling to Dubai to compete in two friendly matches against its Emirati counterpart on June 26 and 29. The papers said that the Bank of Beirut Rugby League team includes four players from AUB.

  • Al-Akhbar of June 23 carried the announcement by AUB that its Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service (CCECS) and the Gerhart Center at American University in Cairo (AUC) are holding a public panel discussion on "Civic Engagement in Higher Education and Educating Civic-Minded Citizens." The paper said that key speakers from AUB, AUC, and Portland State University will give the panel discussion on Tuesday June 23 at 1:00 pm. The paper also said that the public panel is a part of a regional four-day workshop that AUB/CCECS and AUC/Gerhart are co-organizing at AUB entitled "Expanding Civic Engagement in Arab Universities: A Peer Learning Workshop for Faculty" under the Ma'an Arab University Alliance for Civic Engagement.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of June 23 reported on the Second OSB-Coca-Cola Marketing Seminar entitled "A Market Amplification Model for Today's Global Consumer Environment." The paper said that the lecture was held at AUB's Bathish Auditorium in West Hall.

  • The Daily Star of June 23 reported that the Women's Auxiliary of AUBMC, in collaboration with Indonesian Embassy in Beirut, hosted a "Toy Tea Party" at AUB's Marquand House Garden Thursday afternoon. The paper said that the party featured traditional Indonesian music and dance.

  • An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Anwar, The Daily Star, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', and Al-Bayraq of June 24 reported that the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program awarded the American University of Beirut Medical Center Magnet designation thus recognizing its excellence in nursing services and care at the medical center, making it the first in the Middle East and third in the world outside the United States to receive Magent designation while only five percent of hospitals in the United States are Magnet recognized. The papers said that the Nursing Services worked hard for six years toward achieving this prestigious recognition and official news of the designation was received at Issam Fares Hall on June 23, 2009 at 3:00 pm where its team along with Minister of Health Muhamamd Jawad Khalifeh and former ministers Karam Karam and Adnan Mroueh joined AUBMC staff and administrators for a phone call from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

  • Al-Anwar of June 24 reported that AUBMC pharmacist Ulfat Usta participated in the three day international medical conference organized by the faculty of medical sciences at the Lebanese University on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, where she presented the medical center's latest developments in pharmaceuticals.

  • The Daily Star and Al-Mustqbal of June 24 reported that professor of comparative literature and now vice president for academic affairs at Lebanon's Notre Dame University Ameen Albert Rihani has been included in the latest edition of the "2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century" published by the International Biographical Center in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The paper said that Rihani was awarded the Suad Al-Subbah Literary Award by the AUB Alumni Association.

  • As-Safir, Al-Anwar, The Daily Star, Al-Mustaqbal, and Al-Liwa' of June 25 and An-Nahar of June 26 carried the announcement by the American University of Beirut that Professor Emeritus Salim Maksoud, an expert on water resources and irrigation in the Middle East and one of AUB's earliest agriculture professors, passed away on June 24.

The papers said that at noon on the same day at Assembly Hall, the University will hold a ceremony for the awarding of honorary doctorates in humane letters to Kuwaiti economist Abdalatif Yousef Al-Hamad, Egyptian researchetrr Farouk El-Baz, Lebanese singer Majida El Roumi, and Algerian world renowned radiologist Elias Zerhouni.

  • The Daily Star of June 26 reported on a concert held at AUB's Assembly Hall as part of the Beirut Spring Festival commemorating the fourth anniversary of the assassination of Lebanese journalist Samir Kassir. The paper said that this concert, entitled "When the Orient inspires French Opera," was an evening of operatic recital featuring French baritone Remi Van Sam, accompanied on piano by Mahkame Navabi.

  • The Daily Star of June 26 reported on the widespread phenomenon among Lebanese youth of using the on-line social utility of Twitter and gave the example of an AUB architecture student who prompted, through Twitter, a dinner among her Twitter friends at a restaurant in Beirut.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of June 27 featured contemporary Arab dancer and choreographer of 35 years, Walid Aouni. The paper said that Aouni was the first male dancer to perform in 1974 in front of the peacekeeping forces at AUB.

  • Al-Liwa' of June 27 reported that AUBMC's Women's Auxiliary, in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Beirut, held the annual Toy Tea Party on June 18 at Marquand House. The paper said that a scholarship award distribution for nursing students with high academic standing at AUB took place, and that the program included Indonesian musical interludes.

The papers said that the keynote speaker at the main graduation ceremony was the outgoing chair of AUB's Board of Trustees Dr. Thomas Morris. The papers also said that among the Lebanese dignitaries and politicians attending the ceremony were MP Bahia Hariri representing Lebanese President HE Michel Suleiman, Minister Khaled Kabbani representing outgoing Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, Minister Michel Mousa representing Speaker of the House Nabih Berri, board of trustees members Prime Minister designate Saad Hariri, and former Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
    Speeches by Dr. Morris, President Dorman and graduating student Lina Kanso were excerpted.
    "Although the picture seems quite gloomy," Kanso said, "this does not discourage us, graduates, from facing our challenges with confidence. The AUB experience not only gives us the knowledge and the analytical ability to help us understand our environment but also builds our communication skills, develops our spirit of initiative and adaptability and teaches us to value diversity and creativity." Kanso called on her her classmates to be "agents of change," not followers of faulty social constructs. And she invited them to reject social stereotyping of women regarding "their interests, their looks, or most importantly their roles.
    Morris left students with three messages. Volunteer and serve the less fortunate. Stay connected with the AUB community. Never stop learning or wondering. "Your diploma will be recognized throughout the world...as a mark of distinction and accomplishment...because you will bring to your future pursuits not only a vast fund of information, but also the qualities which are the hallmarks of AUB...tolerance of others, freedom of expression, and the capacity to think analytically...to wonder," he said.
    AUB President Peter Dorman told the graduates that their AUB degree will be their passport to a remarkable future. "You are graduating at a time when soft new winds of change are beginning to blow from east and west alike" he said. The graduation ceremony also included the announcement of the names of outstanding students who received distinguished awards.

The paper said that the keynote speaker at the event was Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade Muhammad Safadi, and that among the dignitaries attending were HE Hussein Husseini, Minister of State for Administrative Development Ibrahim Shamsedine, and a number of members of parliament.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of June 30 announced that the Society for Progress and Innovation in the Near East (SPINE) and Boston University, in collaboration with AUB and other Lebanese universities, are holding on July 2-4 their second annual meeting in Beirut to present their most current concepts and techniques in the management of vast array of spinal disorders such as degenerative and traumatic conditions, adult and pediatric spinal deformities (Spine division), sport related injuries, early arthritis and minimally invasive options (orthopedic division) as well as the most current concepts and innovative options for management of acute and chronic painful conditions (Pain management division).

  • Al-Mustaqbal of June 30 published an opinion piece surveying the history of the Lebanese Iranian relations at the political and cultural levels. The paper said that a substantial number of Iranian dignitaries have studied at AUB.
