An-Nahar, The Daily Star, and L’Orient Le Jour of November 2 published an ad by the American University of Beirut Medical Center announcing the return of Dr. Marc Bassim from the United States of America to Lebanon. The papers said that Dr. Bassim is a specialist in diseases and surgery of the ear, as well as hearing balance, facial nerve, and cochlear implant, adding that he is receiving patients in the Private Clinics, 3rd floor of AUBMC.

An-Nahar of November 3 reported on a lecture given at AUB by the Lebanese Minister of Culture Tammam Salam on the cultural, educational, touristic, and economic role of Beirut in the Middle East. The paper said that the lecture was organized by the Women’s League of the American University of Beirut.

L’Orient Le Jour of November 3 published an article discussing the adverse effects of obesity among children arguing that they are more susceptible to developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, arterial hypertension, and high levels of triglycerides. The paper quoted a 2003 study conducted by a team of researchers from the American University of Beirut led by the dean of AUB’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Nahla Hwalla. The paper also said that Dean Hwalla, who is also head of the Lebanese Association for Nutrition and Nutritional Sciences, participated in a conference entitled “Current Nutritional Challenges among Children, Youth, and Adolescents” organized by the association, during which she recommended managing and eliminating the “obesogenic environment” that is causing obesity among the young population in Lebanon.

Al-Balad of November 4 published an interview with the head of the cardiac surgery unit at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Beirut, Dr. Victor Jbara, on survival rates of patients treated for congenital heart disorders and other heart diseases. The paper said that Dr. Jbara is an AUB alumnus.

An-Nahar of November 5 reported that head of the AUBMC surgery department Dr. Jamal Hobballah was among the 8000 surgeons worldwide to attend the 95th American College of Surgeons 95th Annual Clinical Congress recently held in Chicago.
