  • An-Nahar, The Daily Star, and L’Orient Le Jour of November 2 published an ad by the American University of Beirut Medical Center announcing the return of Dr. Marc Bassim from the United States of America to Lebanon. The papers said that Dr. Bassim is a specialist in diseases and surgery of the ear, as well as hearing balance, facial nerve, and cochlear implant, adding that he is receiving patients in the Private Clinics, 3rd floor of AUBMC.
  • An-Nahar of November 3 reported on a lecture given at AUB by the Lebanese Minister of Culture Tammam Salam on the cultural, educational, touristic, and economic role of Beirut in the Middle East. The paper said that the lecture was organized by the Women’s League of the American University of Beirut.
  • L’Orient Le Jour of November 3 published an article discussing the adverse effects of obesity among children arguing that they are more susceptible to developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, arterial hypertension, and high levels of triglycerides. The paper quoted a 2003 study conducted by a team of researchers from the American University of Beirut led by the dean of AUB’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Nahla Hwalla. The paper also said that Dean Hwalla, who is also head of the Lebanese Association for Nutrition and Nutritional Sciences, participated in a conference entitled “Current Nutritional Challenges among Children, Youth, and Adolescents” organized by the association, during which she recommended managing and eliminating the “obesogenic environment” that is causing obesity among the young population in Lebanon.
  • Al-Balad of November 4 published an interview with the head of the cardiac surgery unit at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Beirut, Dr. Victor Jbara, on survival rates of patients treated for congenital heart disorders and other heart diseases. The paper said that Dr. Jbara is an AUB alumnus.
  • An-Nahar of November 5 reported that head of the AUBMC surgery department Dr. Jamal Hobballah was among the 8000 surgeons worldwide to attend the 95th American College of Surgeons 95th Annual Clinical Congress recently held in Chicago.
  • As-Safir of November 5 reported on the first conference held by Lebanese Society of Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disorders (OSTEOS) during which it announced its new osteoporosis prevention and treatment program and fracture risk calculator called FRAX Lebanon. The paper said that FRAX came to Lebanon as a result of the efforts of AUBMC doctor and president of OSTEOS Ghada Hajj Fuleihan and the Lebanese Ministry of Health Dr. Mohammed Jawad Khalifeh, adding that it can be accessed at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.
  • Al-Anwar of November 5 published an interview with Drs. William Zoghby and Huda Habri, two Lebanese doctors living in the United States of America and currently working to find alternative methods to open heart surgery, and treatment of genetically transmitted diseases, respectively. The paper said that Dr. Zoghby attended two years of medical school at the American University of Beirut before moving to the United States in 1980 during the Lebanese civil war.
  • Al-Mustaqbal of November 6 reported on the recent student elections that took place at the University of Saint Joseph. The paper quoted the March 14 student coordinator Samir Al-‘Ashi as saying that he promises “another victory for the party during the forthcoming American University of Beirut student elections.”
  • As-Safir of November 6 reported on the recent statement issued by Hizbullah denying allegations by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in his recent report assessing Lebanon and Israel’s compliance with the UN resolution 1701 in which he accused Hizbullah of violating the terms of the resolution. The paper quoted Hizbullah member Nawwaf Mousawi on the matter while speaking at an American University of Beirut function.
  • Al-Anwar and Al-Bayraq of November 6 reported on the annual dinner organized by the American University of Beirut Cultural Club of the South, held at the Qaryat Al-Saha At-Turathiyya restaurant in Beirut. The paper said that the dinner was attended by Lebanese MP Nawwaf Mousawi along with the AUB Dean of Student Affairs Maroun Kisirwani, and Associate Dean of Student Affairs Talal Nizameddine.
  • Al-Anwar of November 6 reported that a delegation of nurses from the Nursing School of the American University of Beirut accompanied the wife of the Lebanese Minister of Health, Suzie Mohamed Jawad Khalifeh, and the president of Nour Association, Marlene Asaad Hardan, on a tour around a number of schools in Hasbayya and Marje’yun to spread awareness on how to prevent and treat the H1N1 virus.
  • The Daily Star of November 7 published a political editorial by the director of the American University of Beirut’s Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs Rami Khouri entitled, “Turning the Tables on the Arab Security State,” in which he assesses the role of Arab youth and intellectuals in questioning the present political and social order.
  • L’Orient Le Jour of November 7 reported on a lecture given at the American University of Beirut by Iranian graphic designer Reza Abedini. The paper said that the lecture was organized by the AUB Department of Architecture and Design in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in Lebanon, and that Abedini lectured on the influence of Iranian culture and writing on his designs.
  • Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa’, As-Safir, Ad-Diyar, Al-Anwar, Al-Akhbar, L’Orient Le Jour, and Al-Bayraq of November 7 reported that American University of Beirut professors Makhlouf Haddadine and Nisreen Ghaddar have been chosen to join the Lebanese Academy of Sciences as members.  The papers said that outgoing Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora announced their membership during the inauguration of the academy’s first annual symposium entitled, “Sciences in Lebanon: Present Challenges and Future Directions,” held at Crown Plaza Hotel, Beirut.
  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, Al-Anwar, and Al-Bayraq of November 7 reported on a lecture given at the American University of Beirut by the Lebanese Minister of Culture Tammam Salam on the cultural, educational, touristic, and economic role of Beirut in the Middle East. The papers said that the lecture was organized by the Women’s League of the American University of Beirut.
  • Al-Mustaqbal of November 8 published an article presenting a viable future method of farming, such as vertical planting, and discussed subsequent irrigation methods. The paper said that American University of Beirut professor of Biochemistry Mustafa Soufi established a particular irrigation method suited for this kind of farming.
  • Al-Mustaqbal of November 8 reported that American University of Beirut professor Saouma Boujaoude participated in the International Association of Universities and Notre Dame University – Louaize’s jointly organized 2009 IAU International Conference entitled, “The Role of Higher Education in Fostering the Culture of Dialogue and Understanding.”
  • Al-Mustaqbal of November 8 reported that head of the American University of Beirut Medical Center Surgery Department Dr. Jamal Hobballah was among the 8000 surgeons worldwide to attend the 95th American College of Surgeons Annual Clinical Congress that was recently held in Chicago.
  • Al-Mustaqbal of November 9 reported on a recent gun-fight that took place at a nightclub in Beirut and said that those injured in the fight were sent to the American University of Beirut Medical Center for treatment.
  • Al-Liwa’ of November 9 reported on a lecture given at the American University of Beirut by the Lebanese Minister of Culture Tammam Salam on the cultural, educational, touristic, and economic role of Beirut in the Middle East. The paper said that the lecture was organized by the Women’s League of AUB.
  • An-Nahar of November 10 published an article investigating the reasons behind the extreme fluctuations in weather conditions in Lebanon. The paper quoted American University of Beirut professor of land and water resources Nadim Farajallah on this phenomenon.
  • Beirut Letter, Progressive Socialist Party, Lebanese Kataeb, and Al-Khiyam of November 10 listed brief biographies of the members of the new national unity government recently announced by Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri. The papers said the among the new ministers who are American University of Beirut graduates are: Minister of Economy and Commerce Muhammad Safadi, who received a BBA from AUB in 1968; Minister of Information Tarek Mitri who received a BA in Philosophy from AUB; Minister of Energy Jubran Bassil who has a ME  from AUB in 1993; Minister of Industry Ibrahim Dahdahian who received a BE from AUB in 1961; Minister of Finance Raya Muhammad Ali Al Saffar who earned a BBA from AUB in 1987; and Minister of Health Mohamed Jawad Khalifeh who completed his residency in general surgery at the American University of Beirut Medical Center in 1990, and is professor at the AUB Faculty of Medicine.
  • Progressive Socialist Party of November 10 published the biography of the new Lebanese Minister of State Wael Abu Faour and said that he is recipient of a BBA from the American University of Beirut.
  • www.tayyar.org of November 10 published an article commenting on the recent controversy surrounding a modern history book used at International College (IC), which agreed to place opaque stickers over pages of this middle school textbook that label Hizbullah, along with other resistance movements in the Arab world, as a terrorist group. The paper quoted American University of Beirut professor of political studies Ohaness Goktchian during an interview with BBC as saying, “We are raising another generation of children who identify themselves with their communities and not their nation… history is what unites people. Without history we can’t have unity.”
  • Al-Mustaqbal of November 10 reported that American University of Beirut alumna Raghida Haddad, who is executive editor of Al-Bia Wal-Tanmia (Environment and Development) magazine, won this year’s Earth Journalism Award for her report on the effects of global warming on climate change.
  • Al-Akhbar of November 10 reported that the Lebanese American University, Jbeil hosted the Seventh Arab Conference on Antimicrobial Agents. The paper said that the conference was held in collaboration with the American University of Beirut, the World Health Organization, Balamand University, and the Lebanese University.

  • Al-Anwar of November 10 announced that the Women's Auxiliary of the American University of Beirut Medical Center is hosting a presentation by Maxime Chaya who will be lecturing about his daring travel adventures, including trips to Mount Everest and Antarctica.
  • Al-Akhbar of November 10 published an article surveying the reasons of the rising unemployment among Arab women. The paper gave the example of American University of Beirut alumna Hanin who quit her career in Lebanon to join her husband in a Gulf country where she took a job.

  • Saida Online of November 10 published an interview with Dr. Mouaz Hussein Al- Mallah who is head of the Cardiac Imaging Department at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. The paper said that Al-Mallah received an MD from the American University of Beirut in 1998.
  • An-Nahar, Al-Liwa’, As-Safir, and Al-Bayraq of November 10, and Al-Mustqbal of November 11 reported that the Lebanese American University, Jbeil hosted the Seventh Arab Conference on Antimicrobial Agents. The paper said that when naming BAU, Jamal Abdel Nassir avoided naming it the Arab University of Beirut, which would be similar to the name American University of Beirut in word order, to emphasize the Arab identity of the university.

The paper said that Baasiri was lecturer at the American University of Beirut.

  • Al-Liwa’ of November 11 published an interview with Dr. Mouaz Hussein Al- Mallah who is head of the Cardiac Imaging Department at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. The paper said that Al-Mallah received an MD from the American University of Beirut in 1998.

  • As-Safir of November 11 published a profile of new Lebanese Minister of Finance Raya Muhammad Ali Al Haffar. The paper said that Al-Haffar received a BBA from the American University of Beirut in 1987.

  • Al-Liwa’ and Al-Manar of November 11 reported that an international symposium on Edward Said will be held at AUB’s College Hall on November 11. The paper said that the conference is organized by the American University of Beirut Anis Makdisi Program in Literature in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

  • Al-Akhbar of November 11 announced that Shafik Jeha’s book entitled, “Tarikh al-Ta’lim fi Bshamzin 1850-1951,” will be launched at the UNESCO palace on Saturday November 14 by the American University of Beirut and Zahra Association for Literature.

  • Al-Akhbar of November 12 reported that UNRWA Commissioner-General Karen Abu Zayd lectured at the American University of Beirut to discuss the status of UNRWA’s benefits to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon in comparison to other Arab countries, and made recommendations for improvement.

  • Al-Akhbar of November 12 reported that the American University of Beirut’s Women’s Rights Club, in collaboration with the Health Sciences Expertise Club, held a seminar on sexual and reproductive rights. The paper said that the seminar was part of an international campaign organized by the Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies (CSBR) entitled, “One Day One Struggle,” and featured Ghiwa Sayegh as speaker on behalf of the AUB Women’s Rights Club, and Dr. Faysal El Kak, professor of reproductive health at the AUB Faculty of Health Science.

  • Saida Online of November 12 reported on the content of a new report issued by the Chief Executive Officer of the national hospital of Saida Dr. Ali Abdul Jawad in which he mentions that the hospital is a site for training of medical students in Lebanon, including those studying at the American University of Beirut.

  • Elnashra of November 12 reported that the American University of Beirut participated in the university orientation and admission fair hosted and organized by the Safadi Cultural Center. The paper said that the fair gave the opportunity for prospective undergraduate students from various high schools to find out about learning opportunities at universities in Lebanon.
  • Terra.net of November 13 and Al Markazia of November 12 reported on a lecture given by world famous mountaineer Maxim Chaya about his daring travel adventures that included, among other locations, his trip to Mount Everest on May 15, 2006, and Antarctica.   • Al-Markazia of November 13 reported on the opening of the conference entitled “Youth and Democratic Change” organized by the Initiatives for Development organization. The paper said that the organization’s head, American University of Beirut Professor of Political Studies Farid El Khazen, participated in the opening session.

  • Al-Anwar, Al-Markazia, and Al-Mustaqbal of November 13, Al-Liwa’ of November 14, and As-Safir of November 15 reported on the opening of the sixteenth annual scientific conference organized by the Lebanese Association for Advancement of Sciences and the National Council for Scientific Research in collaboration with the Beirut Arab University entitled “Science in the 21st Century.” The papers said that during the opening day of the conference, American University of Beirut professors of medicine Suheil Jabbour and Adel Berbari received awards in recognition of their medical achievements.

  • Lebanon Files of November 16 announced that an awareness campaign to promote the health hazards associated with smoking narguileh will be held at the Aicha Bakkar Public Health Center. The paper said that the campaign is organized by the Public Health Center in collaboration with the American University of Beirut.   • Elnashra of November 16 reported on the opening of the media workshop at the American University of Beirut organized by the University’s Journalism Training Program in cooperation with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. The paper said that the workshop aimed at addressing improving cooperation between the parliament and the media. The paper also said that British Ambassador to Lebanon Francis Guy expressed pride that the British Embassy, through the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, would be taking part in this workshop and stressed the importance of the transparency of all parliamentary actions.
