TerraNet and The Daily Star of January 5 published an article on Lebanon’s inaction in 2009 when it comes to climate change and said that through political delay and disagreement on national environmental legislation, 2009 saw Lebanon weaken its already frail negotiating position it took to Copenhagen. The papers quoted Nadim Farajalla, associate professor of water resources at the American University of Beirut as saying, “Arab countries are so divided and there is not one [single] position that could be taken. The Gulf countries had their own agenda and they pursued it.”

Al-Mustaqbal and Al-Liwa’ of January 5 reported on the screening of Gaza Hospital, a film by Marco Pasquini at the American University of Beirut’s Bathish Auditorium. The papers said that the screening, organized by Umam Documentation and Research, was followed by a discussion with the film director.

Al-Anwar of January 5 published an article commenting on Issam Fares’s recent decision to quit Lebanese politics. The paper said that he is the founder of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut.

SSNP of January 6 published an old interview with late Dr. Anis Sayegh, a writer, editor, founder of the idea of a Palestinian encyclopedia, and founder of the Palestine Research Center, and lifetime staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause who died in Amman at the age of 78. The paper said that Sayegh has a BA in political studies and history from the American University of Beirut.

Lebanese Kataeb of January 7 reported on a recent visit by Lebanese PM Saad Hariri to Jordan where he met with Jordanian King Abdullah. The paper said that there are 750 Jordanian students studying at universities in Lebanon, including the American University of Beirut.

Elnashra of January 10 published an article discussing the effectiveness of trying to enforce a smoking ban in public spaces in Lebanon. The paper quoted a study conducted by the American University of Beirut’s Faculty of Health Sciences, and quoted AUB professor Rima Nakkash as saying, “The solution to prevent harms of smoking is by enforcing smoking bans in public spaces such as schools, universities, and work spaces.”

Khiyam of January 8, As-Safir of January 9, and Lebanon Files of January 11 reported that the American University of Beirut Medical Center and Amel Foundation renewed their collaboration agreement whereby AUBMC would offer medical and preventive medicine care and services to patients at the Foundation’s clinics. The papers said that AUB Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Mohamed Sayegh signed the agreement on behalf of AUBMC.

The paper said that AUB graduate of graphic design Tala Saleh published a book entitled, Marking Beirut: A City Revealed through its Graffiti in which she traces the uniqueness of the Lebanese graffiti style.

The papers said that Sabbagh, who is co-founder of the Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), is an AUB alumnus of the year 1943.

Al-Akhbar of January 13 carried a statement by the American embassy in Lebanon issued to its constituents warning them of thefts occurring in certain taxis operating in Lebanon and asking them to use caution when ordering a taxi. The papers said that Sabbagh, who is co-founder of the Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), is an AUB alumnus of the year 1943, and that he supported many funds and students at the American University of Beirut and its medical center, and started the Diana Tamari Sabbagh foundation in memory of his late wife.

Al-Akhbar of January 14 published a review of the recently published book entitled Bayrut fi qasa’id Al-Shu’araa’: Dirasa wa mukhtarat, by Shawqi Bzei’. The paper said that the book includes a brief history of the development of literature and poetry in Lebanon including the phase during which the Syrian Protestant College, now AUB, was founded, which according to the author constitutes a turning point in the history of Beirut.

As-Safir of January 15 published an update of the events being held on the occasion of Beirut World Capital of the Book 2009. The paper mentioned the launch of a children’s book vending machine at the Children Cancer Center in Lebanon at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. The paper also said that the machine was set up by the National Agency for Children’s books on the occasion of Beirut named World Capital of the Book 2009-10.

Beirut Letter of January 17 published review of AUB professor of graphic design Zeina Maasri’s recently published book entitled Malamih Al-nizaa’ featuring posters from 30 different Lebanese political factions, many produced by well-known Lebanese artists during the Lebanese civil war. Al-Balad of January 18 published an interview and profile of AUB’s new Director of Information and Public Relations Hikmat Beaini featuring his commitment to raise awareness on discrimination and promote human rights and equal opportunities. The paper said that this is a cause he had promoted when living in the United States, and began furthering upon his return to Lebanon two years ago, partly through a new TV show he is preparing and presenting, called Fursa Liljamee' airing at Tele Liban every Sunday, which provides a forum for job seekers to present their cases and be heard.

Al-Markasia of January 19, Terra Net, Arab Economic Financial News, The Daily Star, and Tobacco.org of January 20 and Al-Balad of January 21 announced that the American University of Beirut Tobacco Control Research Group received a two-year grant of $198,258 from the International Development Research Center-Research for International Tobacco Control to support tobacco control research, dissemination, and networking in Lebanon and the region. The papers said that the project is housed in AUB’s Faculty of Health Sciences’ Center for Research on Population Health and is led by Assistant Professor Rima Nakkash.

Tayyar of January 20 reported on the phenomenon of reverse brain drain in Lebanon whereby tens of thousands of Lebanese are returning to Lebanon after having left their jobs or having been laid off. The paper quoted Jenny Zailah, a senior economics student at the American University of Beirut as saying, "There are no more places for fresh graduates. An-Nahar of January 22 reported on the launch of Lebanon Unified (Luban Muwahhadan) group’s “Environment Declaration from Beirut to the World,” at the American University of Beirut. The paper said that the event was held in collaboration with environmental activists at the University and the Lebanon’s Ambassador for the Environment at the United Nations Ragheb Alama.

An-Nahar of January 22 announced that the AUB Zaki Nassif Music Program is holding a concert at the University on January 23 featuring the winners of the 2009 Zaki Nassif choir competition. The paper said that the 2010 Zaki Nassif schools competition will also be also be launched at the event.

As-Safir, Al-Anwar, and Al-Bayraq of January 22 reported on a lecture given by Dr. Muhyieddeen Touq, commissioner general for human rights in Jordan and former chair of the ad-hoc Committee for the Negotiation of the UN Convention Against Corruption, entitled, “Negotiating the United Nations Convention Against Corruption: Lessons and Norms Pertaining to the Arab World.” The papers said that the lecture was organized by the UN Research Initiative of AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs.

Al-Balad of January 22 reported on a lecture given by AUB Professor of Political Studies and Director of the International Center for Human Studies, Theodore Hanf, entitled, “The Political Role of Eastern Christians in their Land of Origin.” The paper said that the lecture was organized by the Eastern Christians Center and took place at the Journalism Club in Chevrolet, Beirut.

As-Safir of January 22 reported on the Beirut Exchange program hosted by the newswire agency Mideast Wire in which foreign students head to Lebanon to learn Arabic and meet with Lebanese politicians. The paper said that those students, unlike students who join AUB for the Arabic summer school program where they only learn language, get to engage in other activities.

Al-Anwar of January 24 and Al-Mustqbal of January 25 reported on the opening of the human rights conference held under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Interior Ziad Baroud, the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Affairs, the Forum for Development, Culture, and Dialogue, the American University of Beirut, and Amnesty International Beirut, entitled “Social Justice and the Role of Human Rights.” The paper said that AUB’s President Peter F. Dorman participated in the forum.

Al-Anwar and Al-Markazia of January 27 and Al-Liwa’ of January 28 reported that the president of the Lebanese Universities League, Hasan Al-Shibli, held a meeting that included the presidents and representatives of member-universities to discuss the role of higher education and the League in influencing strategies and curriculums. The papers said that Provost Ahmad Dallal and Professor Waddah Nasr attended the meeting representing the American University of Beirut.
