Al-Anwar of March 31 published a special supplement about hospitals in Lebanon, with an interview of Mr. Suleiman Haroun, president of the syndicate of private hospital owners in Lebanon. Mr. Haroun attributed the distinction of hospitalization in Lebanon to its excellent staff and low cost. Al-Mustaqbal of March 31 published an article on the H7 bird flu infection found in several villages, in South Lebanon and the prevention measures taken by the government, including the killing of infected birds in these areas. The paper carried the statement by the Ministry of Agriculture that 40 samples of infected birds were lately transferred to AUB lab, and the results of the tests were negative.

Al-Qabas (Kuwait) of March 31 published a conversation with Dr. Youssef Abdul-Mouita who talked about his achievements in education, and the educational projects he founded in Kuwait. The paper said that Abdul-Mouita, born in Egypt in 1927, received his MA in educational administration from AUB in 1972 and then he got his PhD in economics of education and the planning and evaluation of education for development between 1980 and 1981.

Al-Hayat, Al-Bayraq, and L'Orient-Le Jour of March 30 announced that a forum entitled "Education: Reality and Perspective-the Role of the Municipalities in the Educational Policies" will be held at Issam Fares Hall on March 31 and April 1. The papers said that the forum will be held under the patronage of the Lebanese Minister of Education Khaled Kabbani.

Al-Mustaqbal of March 30 reported on the Campaign to Stop Environmental Terrorism, launched by several AUB clubs (UNESCO Club- Environment, Jordanian, Palestinian, and Health Education). The paper said that the campaign is sponsored by the SRC, and in cooperation with the "One Million Tree in Palestine Campaign", organized by the Arab University for the Protection of Environment. The paper said that Khalilzad, who was born in Afghanistan in 1951, met his wife Sheryl Bernard (Australian origin) during his days at AUB. He left in 1975 to Chicago for his PhD in political sciences.

The paper said that Holland visited Beirut upon AUB's invitation to give a talk about Oscar Wilde. Interviewed by Maya Ghandour Hert, Mr. Holland said that he stayed in Beirut for five years just before the war, and was employed in a company selling paper stocks to the Gulf. He also said that he began his effort to document Wilde's history in Beirut.

The paper said that Dr. Abu Jawdeh was born on 9 September 1935 and graduated from both AUB and BAU. He lectured and wrote widely about the environment and, according to the writer, established the Environment Day in Lebanon and the world on 29 June 1962.

Al-Anwar of March 16 reported on a study carried out by Environment Online and published by the Environment and Development magazine. This study determines the levels of noise in Lebanon, pointing out that they exceed the limits set by the World Health Organization in most of Beirut except for places like AUB campus. The study also referred to the dangers behind the Antenna Cell Phone Stations and quoted several experts including Professor Farid Shaaban from AUB, as saying that there is nothing which indicates the level of harm caused by these stations.

The papers said that Dean of Student Affairs Maroun Kisirwani, Associate Dean of Students Talal Nizameddin, and Director of AUB Information and Public Relations Ibrahim Khoury received Mr. Leonov and that Henry Matthews, from AUB's Information Office introduced Leonov to the audience. The papers excerpted the talk by Cosmonaut Leonov who detailed his experience as the first human to "walk" in space. The papers included several pictures of Leonov at AUB and of the photo exhibition organized for him at West Hall.

Al-Bayan al-Iktissadi of March 15 published a letter by Bassam Hael Khweiss, addressed to Marcel Ghanem from LBC TV. Mr. Khweiss, who has a BA in mathematics and an MBA from AUB, discussed the subject Ghanem raised in his talk show Kalam An-Nass (The Talk of the People) on Thursday February 23, regarding the elderly. Mr. Khweiss listed a few facts in his letter. An individual spends 20 years of his life as a retiree; inflation will wipe out a large portion of a retiree's savings; hospitalization for the elderly is increasingly costly.

The address was entitled: "Future States of the University" and the President Waterbury addressed three basic themes: the perils and promise of research, need-based financial aid, and honoring the university's commitment to undergraduate education. The papers quoted the president as saying that AUB must make a positive effort to seek out disadvantaged students from in and outside Lebanon and provide them the financial support they need to come to AUB, and the university should keep focused on the quality of undergraduate education and that it must provide the incentives, time and support to the faculty to assure that this mission is honored.
The papers also said that the President believes that research enterprise at AUB must be re-thought. "I believe in promotion clocks and in productivity. The question for me is how much and how fast?" He concluded by saying: "How we move forward must be a collective decision reached through study and debate."

Al-Mustaqbal of March 6 published a lengthy article about the garbage catastrophe problem in Sidon, where more than 100 tons of solid waste fell from Sidon's garbage dump into the sea. The paper included the opinion of several experts including Wael Hamdan from Greenpeace Lebanon, who recalled that Greenpeace interfered when the ship "Finix 2000" started to dump garbage taken from the Karantina garbage dump in front of AUB Beach.

An-Nahar of March 6 reported on the book signing ceremony for Nada Barakat Khawaja's new book "A Child like other Children" at the Lebanese Book Festival in Antelias. The paper reviewed Khawaja's book which illustrates the life story of Nada with her handicapped son, Antoni. Nada, a mother of three children, graduated from AUB with a BA in education. The book is published by Dar An-Nahar Press.

As-Safir of March 6 published an letter by Ibrahim Hamza, describing his suffering and the problems he is facing in the Ministry of Health and the NSSF in covering the fees of his daughter's medication. Hamza said that his daughter's physician at AUBMC insists that she needs a daily injection and that he was not able to provide her with the medication since four months.

Asharq al-Awsat (Saudi Arabia) of March 6 interviewed Dr. Suleiman al-Habib, the president of Al-Habib Medical Group, about the group's future plans and investments in Saudi Arabia and abroad. Al-Habib talked about the medical center inaugurated in Dubai four months ago in cooperation with AUBMC.

Ad-Diyar, Al-Anwar, An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa, L'Orient-Le Jour and Al-Hayat of March 5 carried the announcement by the Lebanese Internal Security Forces that former Chief of General Security Brigadier Jamil Sayyed was evacuated to AUBMC on March 4, and underwent checkups after suffering from blood tension troubles. Sayyed is currently detained in Roumieh prison in connection with the assassination of Rafic Hariri.

in Bliss Street next to AUB. The billboard wished AUB students success, similar to the success of national unity.

Al-Liwa, Al-Bayraq and Al-Anwar of March 4 reported on the Public Piano Master class by Waleed Howrani, held at Assembly Hall on March 2. The papers included a brief biography of Howrani who received many awards, including the International Tchaikovsky Award when he was 18 years old and the Award of Queen Elizabeth in Belgium at the age of 20.

Al-Bayraq of March 4 , L'Orient-Le Jour of March 6 and L'Hebdo Magazine and As-Safir of March 7 reported that a presentation of anthology of poems written by the late Fortunato El-Khoury accompanied by the music composed by Julia Sfeir El-Khoury will be held at AUB Assembly Hall on March 9 under the title: "Melodies of Love between Notes and Verses." The paper included a brief biography of late Dr. El-Khoury and his wife Julia, saying that the latter had her first concert in Assembly Hall on 2003.

The paper said that many professors and students from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences participated and that the meeting was organized by AUB Book Club.

The paper said that the forum will feature two lectures, on March 7 and 14.

Al-Bayraq and Al-Mustaqbal of March 3 reported on the workshop held in LAU in coordination with EIFL and LIA regarding the development of libraries in Lebanon. The paper said that library directors coming from different institutions and universities including AUB participated in the workshop.

The Daily Star of March 3 published a lengthy article about Sursock exhibition which raises funds for the rehabilitation of Lebanon's National Library. The paper interviewed several participating artists including Nada Sehnaoui, who talked about the importance of this exhibition, recalling her memories in Beirut when she used to visit AUB library. Lebanon's National Library was founded in 1921 when Viscount Philippe de Tarazi donated thousands of printed documents and manuscripts to the Lebanese state. The National Library moved into the old parliament building in Beirut's Place des Etoiles in 1937. Its collection had grown to 200,000 works. The war caused a chunk of its holdings to be lost but attempts to rehabilitate it began in the mid-1990s.

Ash-Sharq al- Awsat (Saudi Arabia) of March 3 reviewed the screening of "Al-Bosta" (the bus) movie in Beirut, and interviewed several spectators about their opinion in the movie including AUB student Rima Moumtaz who said that the movie dealt indirectly with the Lebanese civil war.

An-Nahar of March 2 reported on the meeting held for launching the "Youth for Clergy Accountability" society, and excerpted the addresses by its founders, Badre Aftimos and Salim Yazbeck. The paper said that Mrs. Aftimos is the executive secretary of AUB Alumni Association, Mount Lebanon Branch.
The paper listed the objectives of the society and these include: Getting the youth closer to the church; Conduct census to gauge the number of young degree of commitment to the church, conduct family status census; commit to secular committees to help in religious court cases; update church law; defend woman and child rights.

An-Nahar, Al-Balad and Al-Liwa of March 2 reported on the debate meeting held by MP Hussein Hajj Hassan (Hizbullah) and MP Nabil Nicola (Free Patriotic Movement) at Issam Fares Hall on March 1. MP Hassan talked about the relationship between the two parties and said that General Aoun is a serious candidate for the Lebanese presidency. MP Nicola said that the issue of Hizbullah's weapons can be solved only by dialogue.

Al-Bayraq of March 2 , As-Safir of March 3 , Ash-Sharq, As-Safir, An-Nahar, Al-Liwa, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Bayraq of March 6 and Al-Anwar of March 7 reported on Beirut Arab University (BAU) Faculty of Medicine conference on women's reproductive diseases, delivery, and infertility. The conference was part of the cooperation program for the exchange of expertise among physicians and experts from BAU, AUB, USJ, Makassed and other universities. Ten participants from Lebanon and four from Egypt lectured at the conference and the topics included: infertility, invitro fertilization, ovarian cancer and others.

The papers said that many officials participated in the ceremony including AUB President John Waterbury and AUBMC Deputy Director Marina Hajj.

An-Nahar of March 1 reported on the annual ceremony of the natural cedar forests reserve in Tannourine. The paper excerpted the talks of participants including Lina Yamout who represented the Minister of Environment Yaaqoub Sarraf. Engineer Yamout talked about the establishment of the preserve on 25 February 1998 and the efforts by the ministry to preserve the cedars of Tannourine, including the Integrated Management Project for the Cedar Forests in Lebanon, implemented by AUB in coordination with the ministry.

L'Orient Le Jour of March 1 excerpted the lecture given by the AUB Archaeological Museum Curator Dr. Leila Badre at AUB on February 22. Dr. Badre talked about the AUB Museum team excavations at Tell Kazel, and explained the historical importance of this area. She said Tell Kazel is 18 km north of Tartous, 10 km north of the coastal frontier, overlooks the Abrash river and thus controls the only commercial way from the sea to the heartlands. She said that Tell Kazel remained a chain in the Phoenician commercial network until it was overrun by the Assyrians in 738 BC. The lecture was organized by the Society of the Friends of the AUB.
