Al-Afkar of March 1 reported on a lecture given by Amr Moussa, the secretary general of the Arab League, at the American University of Beirut. The papers said that the lecture was entitled, “The Situation in the Middle East: A Vision for the Future.”

Al-Akhbar of March 1 published an article in which AUB professor Jad Chaaban rebuked claims made against his recent economic study, conducted in collaboration with AUB Professor of Economics Nisreen Salti, which examined the effects of raising the Lebanese Value Added Tax from 10 to 12 percent on the consumer habits of low income population.

Lebanon Files of March 2 and An-Nahar and L’Orient Le Jour of March 3 announced that the International Monetary Fund is holding a series of roundtable discussions on ways to address economic policy challenges facing the region and the youth. The paper said that the first roundtable discussion, hosted by the Department of Economics at the American University of Beirut, will take place on March 4.

As-Safir and Al-Akhbar of March 2 reported on the launch of the Israeli Apartheid Week at the American University of Beirut with a poetry recital by Palestinian poet Murid Barguouti. The papers also listed the remaining activities being held on campus for that occasion.

Al-Markazia, Scottrade, and Al-Akhbar of March 2, AME Info of March 3, and Maktoob Business of March 4 announced that the American University of Beirut Medical Center inaugurated on February 24 the Women's Health Center, which is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to women's healthcare. The papers said that the Center was conceived as a full service practice, and offers a comprehensive range of obstetrical and gynecological services to female patients at every stage of life.

Al-Mustaqbal and As-Safir of March 3 reported on the new initiative by the American University of Beirut that donates old computers to underprivileged communities. The papers said that this recycling project is a product of the joint collaboration of AUB’s Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service and the Department of Computing and Networking Services.

As-Safir of March 3 announced that Jalal Amin will be giving a lecture on March 5 at the American University of Beirut entitled, “The Future of Arab Nationalism.” The paper said that the lecture is organized by the Institute for Palestine Studies.

L’Orient Le Jour of March 3 reported on an art exhibit of masques designed by Italian artist Antonio Fava. The paper said that the Lebanese are familiar with Fava who previously exhibited his works at various places in Lebanon including the American University of Beirut.

Now Lebanon of March 3 reported that the American University of Beirut launched the Israeli Apartheid Week to take place from March 1 until March 6, featuring events including lectures, film screenings, student round tables, and workshops. The paper said that according to advocates of the Israeli Apartheid Week, the event aims to “inspire and mobilize the next generation of students” about Israeli policies and to call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against the Jewish State.

The Daily Star of March 3 and Terra Net and upi.com of March 4 published a political piece commenting on Lebanese President Michel Suleiman’s decision to convene a national dialogue session on March 9, even though the meeting will not change the status of Hizbullah’s arms. The papers quoted AUB Professor of political studies Hilal Khashan as saying, “International actors such as the United States and the United Nations have been pushing Suleiman to reopen the subject of Hizbullah’s weapons.”

Al-Akhbar of March 8 published an article surveying the possible effects of raising the Value-Added Tax in Lebanon in response to plans by the government to increase it from 10 percent to 12 or 15 percent. The paper quoted an economic study conducted by AUB Professors Jad Chaaban and Nisreen Salti, which examined the effects of raising the tax from 10 to 12 percent on the consumer habits of low income population.

Al-Markazia of March 8 reported that the Advisory Board of the international evangelical theological education held a conference in Lebanon that garnered 23 professors in Theology. The paper said that the evangelists have a long history in promoting education in Lebanon and gave the example of their founding the American University of Beirut in 1866.

Terra Net and The Daily Star of March 9 published an article discussing the Lebanese Ministry of Finance’s plans to raise the Value-Added Tax (VAT) from 10 percent to 12 to 15 percent and the decision of the General Labor Confederation to protest should the government approve the plan. The paper referred to a study prepared by the American University of Beirut which examined how a 15 percent VAT would negatively affect low income Lebanese.

The Daily Star of March 10 and Terra Net of March 11 reported that US media reports mentioned on March 10 that Washington had warned Israel against conducting military maneuvers in its northern region, out of fears of a conflict with Lebanon and Syria. Al-Akhbar of March 10 published an article commenting on the wave of destruction of old buildings in Beirut and the consequent erasure of a considerable part of its history. The paper quoted AUB Professor of Architecture, George Arbid, as saying that these buildings have historic value in the architecture of the city in that through them one can trace the evolution of the city’s architecture from traditional to contemporary.

As-Safir and Al-Akhbar of March 11 published the content of a petition signed by a number of members of the AUB community announcing their rejection of all forms of normalization of relations with Israeli institutions, and supporting the call of Palestinian civil society for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel including the academic and cultural boycott as one of the few non-violent strategies to bring to an end Israeli military occupation of Palestinian and other Arab territories. The petition also called on the American University of Beirut, its President and Board of Trustees, Provost, and Deans of the Faculties to join the petitioners in acknowledging that the University recognizes that normal academic exchange with Israeli academic institutions and their faculty is not an option open to AUB faculty and staff.

Al-Anwar of March 12 and As-Safir of March 13 reported that the forum of Palestinian Women in Lebanon held a ceremony to honor eight Palestinian and Lebanese women on the occasion of “International Women's Day.” The papers said that Rosemary Sayegh, former scholar at the American University of Beirut’s Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies, and Aziza Khalidi, who received a MPH from AUB in 1978, were among the honorees.
