  • An-Nahar of May 1 reported that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Denise A. Herbol presented a check of $2.2 million to AUB President Peter Dorman, as part of an annual contribution toward scholarships for deserving students.

  • Al-Liwa', As-Safir, Al-Bayraq, Al-Akhbar, and Al-Anwar of May 1 announced that the sports facilities of the AUB Charles Hostler Center were available for exploration to the Lebanese media and that the AUB Athletics Department is holding a Sports Festival between May 5 and 12, 2009, for the Inauguration of Dr. Peter Dorman as the Fifteenth President of AUB. The papers said that the festival will include sports tournaments between universities in Lebanon.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, and Al-Liwa' of May 1 reported that AUB is taking part in the College Basketball tournament organized by the Lebanese International University and that it lost against the Hariri Canadian University team.

  • Al-Bayraq and Al-Anwar of May 1 reported on the results of the College Judo tournament organized by the Lebanese University Sports Federation in which students from AUB participated.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 1 published a review of AUB professor at the faculty of agricultural and food sciences Rami Zurayk's recently published book entitled From Akkar to Amel: Lebanon's Slow Food Trail.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 1 reported on the Hamra Goes Green plant sale on Hamra street held on April 29 and organized by the People Places Workgroup in collaboration with the Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management Department at AUB.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 1 carried the announcement by the American University of Beirut that the AUB department of architecture and design is inviting Helmi el-Touni, an Egyptian artist, illustrator and graphic designer, to lecture on his work on Monday May 4, 2009 at 6:30 pm. The paper said that the talk will be followed by an exhibition of a selection of his work.

  • An-Nahar of May 4 ran an article by AUBMC professor of hematology and oncology Naji Al-Saghir on road safety in Lebanon.

  • An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Anwar, and The Daily Star of May 4 reported that more than 200 alumni attended on the weekend of May 1-3 the Worldwide Alumni Association of the American University of Beirut (WAAAUB) 2nd International Convention, which also coincided with the launch of Inauguration Month at AUB. The papers said that the convention brought together AUB alumni from Lebanon, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Great Britain, Athens, and North America, who attended WAAAUB meetings and participated in a number of social activities.

The paper said that the talk will be followed by an exhibition of a selection of his work. The paper also announced that AUB held a Choir Concert on the night of May 3. The paper also said that that the students at AUB will be holding a student concert, featuring AUB-student music groups on the occasion of the Inauguration of President Peter Dorman on May 4.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 4 featured the works Helmi el-Touni, an Egyptian artist, illustrator and graphic designer who is invited by AUB's department of architecture and design to lecture on his lifetime work on Monday May 4, 2009 at 6:30 pm. The paper said that the talk will be followed by an exhibition of a selection of his work.

  • The Daily Star of May 4 published an interview with AUB President Peter F. Dorman at the dawn of his inauguration on May 4. The paper quoted President Dorman as saying "I think that one of the things AUB has always done well is represent American educational values in the Middle East."

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', As-Safir, Al-Anwar, The Daily Star, and Dar Al-Hayat (Britain) of May 5 reported on the official ceremony marking the inauguration of the 15th AUB president on May 4 at noon at Assembly Hall. The paper said that among the officials attending the inauguration ceremony in Assembly Hall were Prime Minister Fuad Siniora, who was also representing President Michel Sleiman; MP Yassin Jaber, representing Speaker Nabih Berri; ministers Mohammed Jawad Khalifeh, Tareq Mitri, Tammam Salam, and Raymond Audi; MPs Ismail Sukkariyyeh and Mohammed Amin Itani; former ministers Karam Karam and Michel Pharaon; US Ambassador Michel Sisson, and Jordanian Ambassador Ziad al-Majali. The paper also said that the ceremony was attended by a host of senior Lebanese officials, foreign diplomats, and delegates from top-ranking US universities, in addition to 12 descendants of AUB founder Daniel Bliss--other than President Dorman, who is his great-great-grandson. The papers also said that several trustees also joined the line-up, including ex-PM Najib Mikati, MP Ghassan Tueni and MP Saad Hariri, one of the newest members of the AUB Board of Trustees.

  • Dar Al-Hayat of May 5 reported that on the journalism workshop on reporting from Gaza held at As-Safir Hotel in Beirut and organized by the Lebanese Manar TV channel. The paper said that AUB professor of communications Nabil Dajani assisted in the workshop.

  • As-Safir, Al-Akhbar, www.tayyar.org, and www.aljazeera.net (Qatar) of May 6 reported on the journalism workshop on reporting from Gaza held at As-Safir Hotel in Beirut and organized by the Lebanese Manar TV channel. The paper said that AUB professor of communications Nabil Dajani assisted in the workshop.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 6 and An-Nahar, Al-Mustqbal, Al-Bayraq, Al-Akhbar, and Al-Anwar of May 8, and Al-Liwa' of May 9 announced that the AUB Athletics Department, in collaboration with the Lebanese University League, is holding a Sports Festival between May 5 and 12 2009, for the occasion of Inauguration of Dr. Peter Dorman as the Fifteenth President of AUB.   • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir and Al-Anwar of May 8 announced that on the occasion of receiving the accreditation of Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the AUB Olayan School of Business held a celebration dinner at Phoenicia Hotel, Beirut. The papers said that the Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora and a number of Lebanese politicians attended the dinner.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of May 8 reported that the Children Cancer Center in Lebanon at the AUB Medical Center recently received the ISO 9001 certification. The paper said that the center held a reception to celebrate the certification, which was attended by Lebanese minister of health Muhammad Jawad Khalifeh.

  • Al-Liwa' and Al-Bayraq of May 8, and Al-Balad of May 11 announced the end of the American University of Science and Technology college sports tournament in which AUB participated. The paper said that the tournament was held in association with the Lebanese Sports Federation.

  • Al-Liwa' and Al-Balad of May 8 reported on the dinner held by Lebanese minister of health Muhammad Jawad Khalifeh in honor of AUB president Peter F. Dorman on the occasion of his inauguration as 15th president of the University.

  • Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, and Al-Bayraq of May 9 reported on the Faculty Symposium held on May 3 at AUB discussing the theme of "Toward an Abundant Life." The papers said that the symposium kicked off Inauguration Month at AUB celebrating the Inauguration of President Peter F. Dorman, while speakers at the conference concurred that liberal arts education, multicultural awareness, and ethical values are still needed in a world that has a shortage of people working for the common good. The papers also said that the symposium included the announcement of the Inauguration Student Essay Contest three winners|:  Edmond Gaspard, a first-year electrical and computer engineering student (first winner), Lotfi AlSalah, a first-year architecture student (second), and Jalal Imran, a first-year biology student (third).

  • Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, Al-Liwa', and Ad-Diyar of May 9 announced the results of the first round of the Lebanese basketball college tournament in which AUB's team lost to that of the American University of Science and Technology.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 9 carried the announcement by the AUB Palestinian Cultural Club that, in commemoration of the 61st anniversary of the NAKBA, it is organizing a lecture by Dr. Azmi Bshara entitled "Palestine an Arab Cause or the Palestinian Problem?" The paper said that the lecture will be held on May 14 at Issam Fares Hall.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 9 published an article surveying the repercussions of the lack of pedestrian bridges on university students one of whom is in AUBMC's Intensive Care Unit after she was hit by a car while trying to cross a main road.

  • The Daily Star and www.cyberia.com of May 9 published a political editorial arguing that election monitors during the forthcoming Lebanese parliamentary elections are unlikely to curb wrong-doing in polls. The papers quoted AUB instructor of international affairs Timor Goksel as saying "The monitors' gaps in knowledge about the country and its political idiosyncrasies will make it that much harder for them to spot electoral violations.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, and Al-Akhbar of May 11 reported on the sports results of the weekend preceding the last day of the Sports Festival held at the American University of Beirut Charles Hostler Student Center between May 5 and 12 2009, for the occasion of Inauguration of Dr. Peter Dorman as the Fifteenth President of the American University of Beirut. The papers said that the festival included various sports tournaments between Lebanese universities.

  • As-Safir of May 11 published a eulogy of the late Rami Abi Saab, Lebanese banker, literary, and social worker, who graduated with a BA from AUB in 1952.

  • Al-Anwar of May 11 reported on the annual AUB Folk Dance Festival which was held on Sunday May 10 at AUB's Green Field. The paper said that tens of schools and hundreds of students performed folk dances from around the world.

  • An-Nahar of May 12 published a eulogy Lebanese writer Najla Tannous Akrawi who graduated with a BA from AUB in 1931.

  • The Daily Star, L'Orient Le Jour, and An-Nahar of May 12 reported that a group of environmental activists from IndyAct foundation protested at the Shouf area over the adverse effects of climate change on its Cedar forest infested with harmful insects. The papers quoted an activist as saying AUB carried out a study and concluded that this sudden outburst of insects is due to climate change.

  • Al-Mustaqbal and As-Safir of May 12 reported on the ceremony held by the AUB Alumni Association to honor the head of the Lebanese Order of Engineers Dr. Bilal Alayli. The papers said that the ceremony was held at the AUB Alumni Association's headquarters in Wardieh, Beirut.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 12 published an article about graffiti on bathroom doors at AUB. The paper said that the doors attract notes by students confessing their problems and current social crises.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of May 12 reported on the dinner given by Lebanese minister of health Muhammad Jawad Khalifeh at Eau de Vie restaurant of Pheonicia Hotel in honor of AUB president Peter F. Dorman on the occasion of his inauguration as 15th president of the University.

  • As-Safir, Al-Mustaqbal, An-Nahar, Al-Liwa', Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, Al-Akhbar, Al-Anwar, L'Orient Le Jour, and Al-Awan (Kuwait) of May 13 reported on the opening of the "Second Middle East Human Resources Conference" organized by the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business (OSB) at AUB and held in West Hall on May 12 and 13. The paper said that during the conferenc's opening ceremony and gala dinner held on May 11 at the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel, Prime Minister Fuad Siniora argued that it is human capital that made Lebanon resilient during the most difficult periods of its turbulent 65-year history since independence.

  • As-Safir of May 13 reported that female university athletes from Saudi Arabia have been competing in sports tournaments in the Arab world and have recently competed in basketball against the AUB women team.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 13 announced that the Department of Architecture and Design at AUB is holding its annual City Debates 2009 entitled "Avenues for Change: Towards Politically Committed and Socially Conscious Practices," on May 13-14.

  • The Daily Star of May 13 published a political editorial discussing whether or not the Metn area in Lebanon will witness a fierce competition during the forthcoming Lebanese parliamentary elections in June 2009. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Karim Makdisi as saying "I don't think there will be a surprise in the Metn."

  • www.tayyar.org and Al-Akhbar of May 13 published a political editorial arguing that most of the young candidates for the forthcoming Lebanese elections have not experienced the regular Lebanese life due to their 'elite" upbringing as opposed to MP Wael Abu Faour who came from a middle class family and studied at AUB where he started his political activity.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, and As-Safir of May 14 reported on the launch of the new master's program in mechanical engineering for applied energy at the AUB's Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. The papers said that the event was held under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Education Bahia Hariri.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, and Al-Bayraq of May 14 carried the announcement by AUB that its tennis team ranked first during the Sports Festival recently held to celebrate the inauguration of Peter F. Dorman as AUB's 15th president.

  • As-Safir and Al-Akhbar of May 14 carried the announcement by the AUB Palestinian Cultural Club that, in commemoration of the 61st anniversary of the NAKBA, it is organizing a lecture by Dr. Azmi Bshara entitled "Palestine an Arab Cause or the Palestinian Problem?" The paper said that the lecture will be given on same day at Issam Fares Hall.

  • As-Safir of May 14 carried the announcement by AUB that the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain, in collaboration with the AUB Office of Information and Public Relations, is giving a piano concert by the Spanish pianist Enrique Perez de Guzman, on the occasion of the centenary of the famous Spanish composer, Isaac Albeniz, at AUB Assembly Hall on Friday, May 15, 2009, at 8:00 pm.

  • The Daily Star of May 14 reported on a session held during the "Second Middle East Human Resources Conference" organized by the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business (OSB) at the American University of Beirut by Chairman of Middle East Airlines Muhamamd Hout arguing that low wages are driving educated Lebanese abroad.

  • The Daily Star of May 14 published photo captions of invitees to a gala dinner at Sursock Palace in Achrafieh held to celebrate the inauguration of AUB President Peter F. Dorman.

  • An-Nahar of May 15 published an article about children adoption in Lebanon from the legal and religious perspectives. The paper quoted AUB professor of political and Islamic studies Ahmad Mousalli as saying there is no religious law in Islam that denies one the adoption of children.

  • An-Nahar and Al-Anwar of May 15, and Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, and Al-Balad of May 16 reported that a group of women from AUB went on a day trip to Akkar in North Lebanon and visited the home of MP Issam Fares in the village of Binu.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, and Al-Anwar of May 15, and Al-Balad of May 16 reported that AUB participated in the recent sports tournament organized by the University of Notre Dame in Kaslik.

  • Al-Liwa' and Ad-Diyar of May 15, and As-Safir, Al-Akhbar, and The Daily Star of May 16, and Sama (Palestine) of May 17 reported on the lecture given by Dr. Azmi Bshara entitled "Palestine: an Arab Cause or an Arab Problem?" at AUB's Issam Fares Hall. The paper said that the lecture was organized by the AUB Palestinian Cultural Club in commemoration of the 61st anniversary of the NAKBA.

  • As-Safir, Al-Anwar, and The Daily Star of May 15, and Al-Mustaqbal of May 16 reported on the 2009 AUB Job Fair which attracted close to 200 companies. The paper said that more than 135 companies, almost half of which are multinationals, in addition to 10 non-governmental organizations set up booths and tables to recruit some of AUB's graduates and students, on May 14 and 15.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 15 published a story featuring the pervasiveness of cafes serving coffees and arguiles in Beirut as opposed to pubs that serve alcohol. The paper quoted an AUB student as saying that he occasionally needs to spend some relaxed time at a place which does not serve alcohol.

  • The Daily Star of May 15 and www.tayyar.org of May 18 reported on a lecture given by Jeremy Waiser entitled "The Special Tribunal for Lebanon: Lessons from the Sierra Leone Court." The paper said that the lecture was organized by AUB's Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', As-Safir, Al-Bayraq, and Al-Anwar of May 16 announced the results of the Field Day which officially ended the Sports Festival held between May 5 and 12, 2009 for the occasion of Inauguration of Dr. Peter Dorman the Fifteenth President of AUB. The papers said that the festival included sports tournaments between Lebanese universities and was held at the sports facilities of AUB's Charles Hostler Student Center.

  • Al-Liwa' of May 16 featured Sahar Allawi who won a gold medal in running during the Field Day which was held at AUB's Sports Festival which was held between May 5 and 12 2009, for the occasion of Inauguration of Dr. Peter Dorman, the Fifteenth President of the University.

  • As-Safir of May 16 reported on the annual City Debates 2009 entitled "Avenues for Change: Towards Politically Committed and Socially Conscious Practices," held on May 13-14 at AUB and organized by the University's Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.

  • Ad-Diyar of May 16 announced that the Lebanese Federation of University sports recently held a Judo tournament in which AUB participated.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 16 reported on the book sale held at the AUB Book Store.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 16 reported on the round table discussion on secularism held at AUB and organized by the AUB Makassed Club. The paper said that the discussion was run by a researcher from the Hitten Institute of London called Hamza Tzortsis and AUB Professor of Philosophy Bashar Haidar.

  • The Daily Star and www.cyberia.com of May 16 reported that AUB instructor of political studies and formed UNIFIL spokesman Timor Goksel introduced Donncha Cutriss, a former Irish peacekeeper in Lebanon, who gave a lecture at the AUB Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs.

  • Dar Al-Hayat (Britain) of May 11 and May 19 published a feature article surveying the history of the AUB student newspaper Outlook.

  • As-Safir of May 19 reported on the phenomenon of the wasting of the bee population around the world and alluded to a conference on bee preservation held at AUB in 2001 and organized by its Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences.

  • An-Nahar Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', As-Safir, and Al-Bayraq of May 20 reported on the press conference held at UNESCO Palace to launch the day of national heritage on May 21. The paper said that the Lebanese Minister of Culture Tamam Salam spoke at the press conference, and that the AUB Archaeological Museum is participating in this national day and will be open to receive visitors free of charge.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Akhbar, Al-Anwar, and The Daily Star of May 20 reported that AUB's Faculty of Engineering and Architecture dedicated on May 11 its dean's wing in the name of Fahmi Karagulla, a pioneer in the construction industry and an active AUB donor.

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of May 22 carried the announcement by AUB that its Nature Conservation Center for Sustainable Futures IBSAR is celebrating on the same day the International Biodiversity Day (IBDAA) through an open forum of student presentations on biodiversity and nature.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, and Al-Anwar of May 23 reported that  the 8th FEA Student Conference was held at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at AUB on May 20 and 21, 2009. The paper said that this annual conference provides a forum in which students can present their projects, research, and design. The paper also said that the program included distinguished plenary presentations and technical sessions, and that a concurrent exhibition highlighted the works of FEA students including final year projects. The paper also said that the conference honored 6 FEA graduates for their distinguished contributions to the field.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of May 23 reported that the Zaki Nassif Music Program at the AUB announced the winners of its School Choir Competition.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 23 reported on the round table discussion on secularism and Islam held AUB and organized by the AUB Makassed Club. The paper said that the discussion was run by a researcher from the Hitten Institute of London called Hamza Tzortsis and AUB Professor of Philosophy Bashar Haidar.

  • Al-Anwar of May 23 published a profile of AUB medical doctor and poet Wael Karameh.

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of May 23 published a review of an art exhibit at La Vitrine Gallery in Beirut running until June 5 by Rana Chalabi who studied and graduated at AUB.

  • The Daily Star of May 23 published a review of an art exhibit by Lebanese artist Alfred Tarazi in Downtown Beirut called Silent Square. The paper said that Tarazi works with Atelier Hapsitus run by his former teacher at AUB Nadim Karam.

  • The Daily Star and www.cyberia.com of May 23 published a political editorial arguing that Zahle elections will test Lebanese voters' allegiance to traditional chieftains. The paper quoted Jeffery Karam, a graduate student AUB as saying that "MP Nicholas Fattoush might actually penetrate Minister Elie Skaff's list."

  • As-Safir of May 25 reported on the AUB annual Outdoors festival on May 23-24. The papers said that this year's festival featured Chinese art and culture as a theme.

  • The Daily Star and www.cyberia.com of May 25 published a political editorial questioning the effectiveness of costly electoral ads emerging prior to the Lebanese parliamentary elections on June 7. The paper quoted AUB professor of communications Nabil Dajani as saying that promotional campaigns aim at arousing supporters' emotions and mobilizing them.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', Ad-Diyar, Al-Bayraq, Al-Akhbar, Al-Anwar, and L'Orient Le Jour of May 27 reported on the press conference held by the Baalbeck International Festival committee at AUB's Assembly Hall. The paper said that the conference, which was held to launch the festival of this year, was followed by a special musical evening in collaboration with the Lebanese Higher Conservatory of Music entitled "Jazz the Way We Love it."

  • An-Nahar of May 27 carried the announcement by the AUB Women's League that it will hold its annual Marquand House party on June 1.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 27 and May 28 published in full length the text of the lecture given by Dr. Azmi Bshara entitled "Palestine an Arab Cause or the Palestinian Problem?" held at AUB's Issam Fares Hall on May 14. The paper said that the lecture was organized by the AUB Palestinian Cultural Club, in commemoration of the 61st anniversary of the Palestinian NAKBA.

  • Al-Akhbra and Al-Anwar of May 27 reported on the American University of Beirut annual Outdoors spring festival held on May 23-24. The papers said that this year's festival featured Chinese art and culture as a theme.

  • Al-Mustaqbal and Al-Akhbar of May 28 featured a new Lebanese non-sectarian NGO called "Rootspace" aimed at voicing the peaceful message and opinion of youth in Lebanon. The paper said that among those who joined the initiative is an AUB student called Darine Ghaith.

  • Al-Liwa' of May 28 announced that AUBMC professor of internal medicine Adel Berbari lectured during the conference on hypertension and blood pressure held at the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel, Beirut.

  • Al-Akhbar of May 28 carried the announcement by AUB that Soprano Lubana Al-Kuntar accompanied by pianist Zina Asfour will be performing at the same night at the Assembly Hall.

The paper said that the seminar was organized by the AUB Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs with the Carnegie Middle East Center, and hosted Sven Behrendt, Rami Khouri, Danyel Reiche and Ibrahim A. Warde as panelists.

  • The Daily Star of May 30 and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida (Palestine), Al-Riyadh (KSA), Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat (KSA) of May 31 published an article abiut the popularity of smoking in Lebanon. The paper quoted Dr. Ghazi Zaatari AUB professor of pathology and laboratory medicine and head of the WHO study group on tobacco regulations and AUB professor of health science Rima Nakkash that there is an increase in smoking among youth in Lebanon.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of May 31 reported on the conference held at the AUB and entitled "Arab Youth in the Near East: Marginalization and Modernization." The paper said that the conference was organized by the AUB Center for Behavioral Research.
