  • Al-Balad and L'Orient Le Jour of October 3 reported that the 2008-09 academic year at AUB started on September 29. The papers said that about 1600 new students, of whom 217 are international students from 32 countries, arrived on campus for orientation week at the end of September.

  • The Daily Star of October 3 reported that physician and world-renowned surgeon Shukri Khuri passed away during the weekend of October 1-2. The paper said that Khuri is a graduate of AUB and a recipient of its Penrose Award.

  • As-Safir of October 3 announced that the Lebanese Heritage Club at AUB announced their program of activities for the year 2008-09. The paper said that the activities would commemorate Lebanese writer Amin Rihani.

  • <http://www.cyberia.com>www.cyberia.com of October 3 published an editorial discussing the emergence of Islamic fundamentalist movements such as the Salafi movement in Syria and quoted AUB professor of political studies Ahmad Moussali who said that Syria has a bad history with this group.

  • The Central News Agency of October 3 reported that AUB professor of economics Jad Chaaban will participate in a business and economic journalism workshop held on October 11 at the Meridian Commodore Hotel, Beirut.

  • As-Safir, Al-Liwa', Al-Bayraq, and Al-Balad of October 4 reported that the Lebanese Rugby League will compete in the finals of the European Rugby League Championship against the Serbian team at the Amin Abdelnour Stadium in Bhamdoun, Lebanon. The paper said that the Lebanese team includes AUB students.

  • As-Safir of October 4 announced that AUB will hold the Opening Ceremony inaugurating its academic year 2008-09 on October 6 featuring a speech by AUB president Peter Dorman.

  • The Daily Star of October 4 carried the announcement by AUB that the Lebanese certification body for organic farming, LibanCert/Quacerta will hold a ceremony to announce AUB as a recipient of EU accreditation on Monday October 6 at 11 am at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Hamra.

  • Al-Maw'id of October 6 published an interview with Camilla, daughter of legendary Arab woman singer Asmahan. Camilla recalled that when she was young she visited a friend at the AUB hospital.

  • Al-Akhbar of October 6 reported on student elections at universities in Lebanon last year and this year. Among the examples given of student parties affiliated with Lebanese political parties were ones from AUB.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of October 7 carried an ad by the American University of Beirut of a vacancy for Engineer/Architect is available at the University's Facilities and Design Unit.

  • As-Safir, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', Al-Bayraq, Al-Anwar, Ad-Diyar, An-Nahar, The Daily Star of October , Al-Balad of October 8 and Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat (KSA) of October 9  reported that AUB  held its 143rd Opening Ceremony inaugurating the academic year 2008-09. The paper said that ceremony featured a speech by AUB's new president Peter Dorman entitled "Education at AUB: The Importance of Fallibility."

  • An-Nahar of October 7 and 8 announced that a book session will be held to discuss Marwan Muasher's recently published book "Nahj al-I'tidal al-Arabi" (the movement of Arab moderation) at Issam Fares Hall on October 10. The paper also published chapter 3 of the book.

  • The Daily Star of October 7 and Sawa (USA) of October 8  published a political editorial discussing concerns about incursions of Syrian troops on Lebanon's northern border. The paper included a quotation by AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of October 8 reported that the Lebanese certification body for organic farming, LibanCert/Quacerta held a ceremony on Monday October 6 at 11 am at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Hamra to announce AUB as a recipient of the EU accreditation.

  • Al-Liwa' and Al-Jareeda (Kuwait) of October 8, Al-Watan (Oman) of October 9, Al-Qabas (Kuwait) of October 11, Awan (Kuwait) of October 12, Al-Rai (Kuwait) of October 13 announced that Monot Theatre will host starting October 15 a dark comedy entitled Sharon and my Mother in Law based on a novel by Palestinian writer Su'ad al-'Ameri. The papers said that al-'Ameri studied architecture at AUB.

  • As-Safir of October 8 carried AUB announcement that professor Antoine Zahlan will give a lecture entitled "The Nakba after 60 years" at AUB's West Hall on October 10, 2008. The paper said that the lecture is part of the Constantine Zurayk Lecture Series organized by the Institute for Palestine Studies.

  • The Daily Star of October 8 reported on a three-day seminar on the relationship between religion and democracy held in the city of Byblos by a group of Lebanese students and scholars from Germany, Lebanon, and France. The paper said that AUB visiting professor of political studies Theodore Hanf participated in the seminar.

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa', As-Safir, Al-Anwar, and Ad-Diyar of October 9 reported that the American University of Beirut welcomed its new students with a gathering on October 7, 2008 at the Green Oval where the university's new president Peter Dorman announced this year's recipients of three scholarships: the Merit Scholarship, the Baccalaureate Scholarship, and the President's Scholarship.

  • An-Nahar and Al-Liwa' of October 9 announced that AUB's Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs will hold on October 9 at West Hall its 3rd lecture of The Bill and Sally Hambrecht Distinguished Peacemakers Lectures entitled "Can Washington Mediate Arab-Israeli Peace? Lessons from Camp David II, the Clinton Years and beyond" given by Robert Malley.

  • Al-Liwa' of October 9 announced that the AUB's Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs will hold on October 14-15 a workshop on policies for regional climate change entitled "Arab World Policies Post 2012 Climate Negotiations."

  • L'Orient Le Jour of October 9 reported that Kulturzentrum and AUB's Office of Information and Public Relations held a guitar duo concert by Judith and Volker Niehusmann on October 7 at AUB's Assembly Hall. The paper said that the program included Ferdinando Carulli, Padre Antonio Soler, Volker Niehusmann, Ida Presti, and Fernando Sor.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of October 10 reported on the recently published 2008 International Union Report on Mental Health, launched on the International Day for Mental Health to raise awareness of the issue. The paper quoted AUB associate professor of psychology at AUBMC Munir Khani as saying that the responsibility of raising mental health awareness lies on all of us.

  • The Daily Star of October 11 published an article surveying the Italian Embassy's efforts to finance alternative energy projects. The paper said that the Italian Embassy in Lebanon co-financed the construction of the first solar car of the Middle East, designed and assembled by the American University of Beirut.

  • The Central News Agency of October 10 and Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat (KSA) of October 11 announced that a two-day workshop on Arab business journalism organized by Reuters in collaboration with AUB's Olayan School of Business will held on October 13 and 14 at AUB.

  • Al-Anwar of October 12 and Al-Mustaqbal of October 13 reported on the campaign for the reforestation of the Cedars of the Chouf area that is initiated by IBSAR at AUB as part of its project Seeds of Hope, Trees for Tomorrow. The paper said that the campaign planted 3000 trees in the Chouf area.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of October 12 reported on the lecture organized by AUB's Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and given by Robert Malley on October 9 and entitled "Lessons from Camp David II, the Clinton Years and Beyond." The paper said that Malley served in 2000-01 as Special Assistant to President Bill Clinton for Arab-Israeli Affairs and Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs at the National Security Council.

  • Al-Balad of October 13 published an article featuring the kinds of financial aid given to university students at private universities including AUB.

  • An-Nahar of October 13 published a eulogy by Dr. Joseph Ghafari, Professor and Head of the Division of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, remembering Andre Tabourian, co-donor of the Karekin Tabourian Dentofacial Clinic at AUBMC.

  • The Daily Star of October 14 and L'Orient Le Jour of October 15 published an in memoriam piece by Joseph George Ghafari, head of the dento-facial clinic at AUBMC, on the passing away on October 7 of Andre Tabourian, co-donor of Karekin Tabourian Dentofacial Clinic at AUBMC.

  • The Central News Agency, L'Orient Le Jour, Al-Anwar, Al-Bayraq, As-Safir, Ash-Sharq, Al-Liwa', and Al-Mustaqbal of October 14 published an article on a recent parliamentary commission formulated to regulate the sale of Lebanese bottled water. The papers said that water samples from Lebanese water companies will be analyzed in laboratories at AUB.

  • Al-Akhbar of October 14 published an article on the effects of the 7 percent increase in tuition fees at AUB this year. The paper said that the increase did not deter students form enrolling at AUB nor encourage them to protest; rather, the students said they will wait for student elections to raise the issue.

  • Al-Liwa' of October 14 published an article analyzing the effect of the recent reconciliation between the 14 and 8 of March parties on student life and interaction at AUB.

  • The Daily Star, Al-Anwar, Al-Bayraq, As-Safir, Al-Liwa', and Al-Mustaqbal of October 15 reported on the a two-day regional workshop entitled "Arab World Policy for Post-2012 Climate Negotiations" held on October 14 and 15 and hosted by AUB's Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) in collaboration with the Heinrich Boll Foundation and the League of Independent Activists (IndyACT). The papers said that the keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Habib El-Habr director and regional representative of the United Nations Environment Program, Regional Office for West Asia, Bahrain.

The papers said that speakers will include  minister Tarek Mitri, ambassador Khalil Mekkawi, former President of LAU Riad Nassar, and Assistant Professor of Economics at AUB Jad Chaaban.

  • As-Safir and the Central News Agency of October 16 announced that AUB Alumni Association Beirut Branch will inaugurate and host at its premises in Wardieh, Beirut, a painting exhibition, Dreams, by artist Shirine Cronfol.

  • Al-Akhbar of October 16 published an editorial that discusses the students' use of English as the only spoken language on AUB campus while excluding Arabic altogether.

  • Al-Akhbar of October 16 published a review of the recent AUB Issam Fares Institute workshop on regional climate change. The paper said that among the flaws of the workshop is the absence of individuals in positions of power and whose presence might have been effective in communicating the outcomes of the workshop to the Arab League.

  • The Daily Star and Al-Qabas (Kuwait) of October 16, and The Jordan Times (Jordan) published an analysis on the mixed reviews of Syrian-Lebanese diplomatic ties. The papers quoted AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan as saying "Syria may change its tactics vis-à-vis Lebanon but not its strategy."

  • The Daily Star of October 16 published an editorial on the traces of Latin American culture in Lebanon by recounting the story of a Latin American family of Lebanese ancestry living in Lebanon. The paper said that part of the signs of Latin American culture in Lebanon include the emergence of Capoeira as a popular dance and the existence of the Latino Dance club at AUB.

  • The Central News Agency of October 17, and As-Safir of October 18 announced that the WAAAUB, under the patronage of AUB president Peter Dorman, will hold on October 24 at West Hall a reception in honor of PM Fuad Siniora and Lebanese politicians who are AUB alumni.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of October 18 carried the announcement by Society of the Friends of the AUB Museum that the AUB Museum will be hosting on October 22 AUB President Peter Dorman to give a lecture entitled "Gender Trouble in Ancient Egypt: The Case of King/Queen Hatshepsut."

  • Al-Anwar, As-Safir, Al-Liwa', Al-Mustaqbal,  An-Nahar and Ad-Diyar of October 18 reported that the AUB Faculty of Engineering and Architecture honored six of its alumni during the 7th FEA Student Conference held on October 16 and 17. The papers said that the honorees are Karem Saqqallah, professor at the University of Michigan; Fadi Qurdahi, professor at the University of California Irvine; George Berbari head and founder of PRO Engineering UAE; Muhammed Moughrabi, director and executive member of Taamir Group, UAE; Ubaida Sidani, head of creative department at Dubai Information Company; and Taha Mikati, founder and head of MI Group.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of October 18 reported that the Hariri Foundation recently established, in collaboration with the American University of Beirut, a career orientation center for university students and graduates.

  • 14 March of October 20 reported the theft of a Lebanese lawyer by two males thieves who snatched her purse after she had parked her car in a parking lot next to AUBMC.

The papers said that program includes speakers such as HE Tarek Mitri, HE Khalil Mekkawi, Riad Nassar - Former President of LAU, and Jad Chaaban - Assistant Professor of Economics at AUB.

  • The Daily Star of October 21 published an article on the recent US approach towards the Lebanese Armed Forces. The paper said that the US has recently committed to supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces. The paper quoted former senior adviser to the UN and lecturer in international relations at AUB Timor Goksel as saying "No matter what the Americans give the Lebanese army it will never be a threat to Israel."

  • Al-Hayat of October 22 reported that the AUB Faculty of Engineering and Architecture honored six of its alumni during the 7th FEA Student Conference held on October 16 and 17.   • The Daily Star of October 22 published an article featuring a new software designed by academics at the University of Maryland that can predict the future actions of Hizbullah. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Ahmad Moussalli as saying "you cannot predict these things using a computer."

  • L'Orient Le Jour and Al-Mustaqbal of October 22 announced that the Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with AUB's Department of Architecture and Design, is holding on October 30 a round table discussion entitled "The New Ways of Living in the City" by Spanish architects Juan Herreros and Javier Maderuelo, and Lebanese architect Bernard Khoury.

  • Al-Anwar of October 22 announced that the Brazilian Embassy, in collaboration with the Office of Information and Public Relations, is holding a public lecture introducing the Brazillian Dance Capoeira on October 23 at West Hall.

  • The Daily Star of October 23 published a political essay analyzing the reconciliation bid between Samir Geagea and Sleiman Frenjieh. The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan as saying "the Christian leaders are dividing the spoils of the system - they call it reconciliation."

  • The Daily Star of October 23 published an article featuring the new two-year certificate in journalism offered by the journalism training program at AUB.

  • Al-Bayraq, Al-Mustaqbal, An-Nahar, and Al-Anwar of October 23 reported on the Sociology Cafe gathering that hosted on October 21 the managing partner of Information International Jawad Adra in a talk entitled "The Impact of Opinion Polls on Decision Making between USA and the Arab World." The papers said that the Sociology Cafe meeting was organized by AUB's Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

  • As-Safir and the Central News Agency of October 23 carried an AUB announcement that the lecture introducing Capoeira Dance that was scheduled to take place at West Hall on October 23 was postponed to October 24 and that the Capoeira workshop will continue until October 28.

The papers said that the lecture was organized by the Society of Friends of the AUB Museum. The papers also said that Dorman surveyed the history of the Egyptian Queen Hatsheput who was the only queen in ancient Egypt to rule and dress as a king.

The paper said among those given the honorary awards was Lebanon's PM Fouad Siniora,  and that the ceremony was organized by the Worldwide Alumni Association of the American University of Beirut (WAAAUB).

  • An-Nahar, Al-Mustaqbal, Ad-Diyar, and Al-Anwar of October 26 reported on the meeting of President Michel Sleiman and PM Fuad Siniora with Qatari businessman Badre Abdallah Al Darwish Fakhro in which they discussed with him his funding projects in Lebanon including projects at AUBMC.

  • Al-Akhbar of October 27 reported on the latest annual report of the Arab Forum on Development and Environment to which AUB professor Farid Chaaban contributed with a study on air quality in the region.

  • Al-Akhbar of October 27 reported on a peaceful student sit in at AUB protesting the oppression of the Palestinian people at the occupied territories.

  • Al-Akhbar of October 27 published a biography of Palestinian historian Anis Sayegh who graduated from AUB before traveling to Cambrige, UK, in 1953.

  • Al-Liwa' of October 27 announced that world-renowned mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah will be giving at AUB on October 27 a lecture entitled "Mind, Matter, and Mathematics." The paper said that the lecture is organized by AUB's Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences and will take place at AUB's Issam Fares Hall.

  • The Daily Star of October 29 reported on the ceremony held in honor of 11 current Lebanese ministers who are AUB alumni on October 24 at AUB's West Hall. The paper said among those given the honorary awards was Lebanon's PM Fouad Siniora, and that the ceremony was organized by the Worldwide Alumni Association of the American University of Beirut (WAAAUB).

The papers said that the Board of Trustees of International College called for and organized the memorial. The papers also said that the memorial announced the establishment of the Randa Khoury Teaching Aptitude Development Fund in her honor.
