  • Al-Royya of April 1 reported on the two-day Arab Forum for Environment and Development during which world environmental experts said that Arab states, likely to be among those hit hardest by climate change, are not doing enough to promote renewable energy. The paper quoted Mey Jurdi, a professor of environmental health at the American University in Beirut, as saying, “They keep saying we need more research. Why do you need additional diagnosis when the patient is dying?”

  • Awan Kuwait Newspaper of April 1 published a profile of Dr. Shibli Shmayyil (1850-1917) and described him as one of the key figures in Arab renaissance. The paper said that he graduated from the American University of Beirut.

  • Laha Magazine of April 2 reported on the Ziad Rahbani concert held in Cairo as part of the Cairo International Jazz Festival and said that the first time Rahbani played jazz was at a concert at the American University of Beirut in 1985 during the Lebanese Civil War.

  • Arab News and RBC Dain Rauscher Inc. of April 2 reported on the keynote speech inaugurating the Toastmasters Annual Division M Conference on April 1 in Alkhobar given by former Saudi Aramco President and CEO, Abdallah Jum’ah. The paper quoted Jum’ah as saying that working for Aramco at age 16 was his first paying job, and that the company helped him attend the American University of Cairo and later the American University of Beirut.

  • Al-Wasat of April 3 published an editorial which argued for the need of effective planning and investment in education in the Arab world. The paper gave the example of the American University of Beirut that started off in 1866 with only 16 students and has since then developed into a complete university.

  • Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat of April 3 announced that the American Society of Transplantation (AST) has announced that its board of directors has selected Dr. Mohamed H. Sayegh, AUB’s vice president for Medical Affairs and the Raja N. Khuri dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Medical Center, as this year’s recipient of the AST Basic Science Established Investigator Award (Professor Level).

  • Dar Al-Hayat of April 4 reported that Dhofar University has passed the initial phase of accreditation and is approved as Oman’s first official private university. The paper said that it is thanks to the affiliation of Dhofar University with the American University of Beirut that it was able to achieve this accreditation.

  • Middle East Online of April 7 published a political editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of the AUB Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, entitled, "The Israeli-American-Arab Dance Will Resume." In it, he argued that unless Washington "puts bite into its position [regarding Israeli settlements] - by threatening to withhold financial or trade incentives, say - the mediating role of the United States will remain largely docile, symbolic, and ineffective."

  • Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat of April 10 reported that the Coordinating Committee for Autism in Lebanon is organizing a series of events during the month of April in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Department of Disabled, and the Arab Network for Autism.   • Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat of April 11 reported that AUB President Peter Dorman edited the compilation Medinet Habu IX. The Eighteenth Dynasty Temple, Part I: The Inner Sanctuaries at the end of 2009. The compilation is a collection of 150 plates with a 92-page guidebook and commentary. The paper said that the book is published by the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago.

  • Ar-Rayah of April 13 published an interview with Dalal Mukarzil, the director of the Career Development Office at Qatar University. The paper quoted Mukarzil as saying the Qatar University hopes to host experts from the American University of Beirut to conduct development workshops, namely in the areas of education for current teachers at the University.

  • Middle East Online of April 14 published a political editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of the AUB Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, entitled, "An American Middle East Peace Plan.” In it, he argued, "If the US government offers a blueprint for Arab-Israeli peace it should first review all its failed mediating efforts of the past 30 years; then chart a new strategy that avoids repeating the mistakes of the past."

  • Al-Ghad, Petra Jordan News Agency and Federation of Arabic News Agencies of April 20 reported on a talk and round table discussion given by former Jordanian Minister of Information Layla Sharaf as part of the Big Leaders Forum in which she spoke about her political, cultural, and social journey. The paper said that Sharaf met her husband while she was a student at the American University of Beirut. The papers also said that her father studied medicine at the American University of Beirut and graduated in 1917.

  • Ma'an News Agency and Al-Quds of April 21 reported that a group of physicians from the Palestinian Foundation for Skin and Reproductive Disorders participated in the Third Winter International Academy for Skin Disorders Conference held in Switzerland. The paper said that the Foundation will offer Dr. Abdul Ghani Kibbi of the American University of Beirut Medical Center an honorary membership due to his contributions in the field of dermatology.

  • Countercurrents.org of April 17, Salem News, Al-Manar, and Atlantic Free Press of April 19, The Palestine Chronicle and Uruknet of April 20, and World Prout Assembly of April 21 published a letter by Franklin Lamb, written in 2007, addressed to his late wife and journalist Janet Lee Stevens on the anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila Massacre. The paper said that Janet’s body was found in 1983 in the basement morgue of the American University of Beirut Medical Center.

  • Business Week and Bloomberg, Hurriyet Daily News, and Economic Reviews of April 19 reported on Turk Telekom’s interactive education service and said that its Chief Executive Officer, Paul Doany, turned the former state-owned monopoly into a provider of data and entertainment over the Internet. The paper said that Doany studied engineering at the American University of Beirut.

  • WBUR.org and NPR Broadcast of April 21 published a political piece which argued that Lebanon and Syria are experiencing a rapprochement that could result in significant economic benefits, adding that the Lebanese, however, are wary and wondering how long the positive trend will last. The paper quoted Karim Makdisi, a professor of political studies at the American University of Beirut, as saying that "all in all, it seems this thaw in relations between the Lebanese and the Syrians could continue for some time, but only if things remain quiet."

  • Gulf News of April 25 reported that thousands of Lebanese  took to the streets on April 25 in a demonstration calling for secularism and a new personal status law. The paper quoted Sarah Obeid, 21, who is a student at the American University of Beirut, as saying, "As a young Lebanese woman, it was a spark of hope because we face frustration everyday when we hear about sectarian incidents."

  • Al-Arab Online of April 25 reported on the first solo exhibition in the UAE by Lebanese artist Mohammad el-Rawas at Art Sawa. The paper said that upon returning to Beirut from abroad in 1981 with a masters degree in printmaking, he started his academic career at the Lebanese University and the American University of Beirut, that lasted 27 years.

  • BBC News of April 25 reported that thousands of Lebanese  took to the streets on Sunday in a demonstration that called for secularism and a new personal status law. The paper quoted Dima, a student at the American University of Beirut, who opposes the call for secularism in Lebanon, as saying, "I will never marry anyone outside my sect and I don't think anything will change because there is no way in Lebanon that a Christian from the north, for example, will ever allow his daughter to marry a Shia Muslim from the south."

  • Carnegie Mellon University of April 24, The Tartan of April 25, Sys-con, Scottrade and Forbes.com of April 26, and Fox44 News of April 27 announced that Ian Rawson, the managing director of Haiti’s Hopital Albert Schweitzer, will give the keynote address at Carnegie Mellon’s 113th commencement ceremony scheduled for May 16. The papers said that Rawson has a bachelor’s degree in political studies from the American University of Beirut.

  • America.gov-Arabic of April 29 published an article featuring  AUB Trustee Abdul Salam Haykal who was invited by the US administration to attend the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship that took place on April 26 and 27 in Washington D.C. The paper said that Haykal is an AUB alumnus.

  • Main Line Media News of April 29 published an article surveying the health hazards posed by smoking the "hookah," or narguileh. The paper said that researchers at the American University of Beirut  found that the  practice of smoking hookah "bodes health risks of its own" since smokers tend to inhale more volume of smoke for a longer period of time.
