Al-Wasat of December 3 reported that Bahraini first Princess Sabika bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa recently honored former Bahraini Minister of Health Nada Abbas Haffaz during a ceremony held on the occasion of the Bahraini Woman Day. Haffaz was the first woman to serve as minister of health in the Arab world. The paper added that she specialized in family medicine at the American University of Beirut. Innovations Report of December 4 and Newspost Online of December 7 published an article surveying the adverse health effects of smoking waterpipes and argued that waterpipe tobacco smokers inhale same toxicants as cigarette smokers. The papers cited a study conducted by Thomas Eissenberg, professor in the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Psychology, and Alan Shihadeh, associate professor at the American University of Beirut, which provided “concrete, scientific evidence that contradicts the oft-repeated myth that waterpipe tobacco smoking does not involve users inhaling the same harmful chemicals that cigarette smokers do.”

Gulf Times of December 5 published an article featuring the reaction of governments of Arab countries to the recent Swiss poll that called for a ban in building minarets and quoted analysts who warned that the consequences of the Swiss minaret ban could be worse than the Danish cartoon riots. The paper quoted Sari Hanafi, professor of sociology at the American University in Beirut, as saying, "With the Danish cartoons there were issues of freedom of expression and questions of interpretation. If you take the banning of the veil in France, there was contention over whether or not the Muslim families were forcing their girls to wear the veil... Here the referendum was explicitly racist, based on a poster campaign depicting an evil looking veiled woman beside a minaret." Al-Riyadh of December 9 and Al-Akhbariah, Moheet, and Ebhare of December 10 published an article by Abdulrahman Al-Zahrani defending his brother, a Binghamton University anthropology student, Abdulsalam Al-Zahrani against accusations of murdering 77-year-old Dr. Richard T. Antoun, who was a Fulbright Scholar and past president of the Middle East Studies Association. The papers said that Antoun had taught at the American University of Beirut. The paper said that the event included the launch of University professor of computer science Muhammad Watfa’s recently published book Coverage Strategies in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Rigorous Analysis. The National Newspaper of December 12 reported that the United Arab Emirates is assembling scientists and researchers from around the world next month to discuss health risks and help set the country’s subsequent research agenda, and said that the panel will talk about epidemics, genetics, food security and other critical issues during a four-day event at UAE University in Al Ain. The paper said that Professor Iman Nuwayhid, dean of the faculty of health sciences at the American University in Beirut, will present work on how Arab nations are particularly vulnerable to climate change and its health consequences.
