Al-Jazirah of September 1 published an article featuring the phenomenon of Saudi students who leave to neighboring countries in pursuit of higher educational degrees. The paper said that there are 800 Saudi students in Lebanon studying at four universities, including the American University of Beirut. Al-Wasat of September 21 reported that Rima Khalaf was recently appointed undersecretary general and executive secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The paper said that Khalaf holds a BA in economics from the American University of Beirut and a doctorate of philosophy in system science from Portland State University. Middle East Online of September 27 published a political editorial arguing that “the post-9/11 decade saw two opposite movements: first, an extraordinary response by members of the international community to build or rebuild relations between Islam and Christianity, the Muslim world and the West; second, at the same time, the growth of Islamophobia.” The paper said that among the examples of the former is Prince Al-Walid Bin Talal's endowment of six centers, enabling the creation of two American studies centers at the American University in Cairo and American University in Beirut, and four centers at Harvard, Cambridge and Edinburgh universities, and the continued work of Georgetown University's Centre for Muslim Christian Understanding established in 1993 to build bridges between Islam and the West.
