Middle East Online of August 1 published a political editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut, entitled, “A Welcomed Beirut Luncheon.” He argued that the “Saudi-Syrian lunch in Beirut is a positive and welcomed move that should keep things quiet for some months; however, the long-term, structural stability in this entire region will remain elusive. Zawya of July 3 reported that the Friends of Poet Jawdat Haydar, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, launched the third annual Jawdat Haydar Poetry Recital Competition at the UNESCO Palace in late May. The paper reported that the Friends of Jawdat Haydar also announced the winner of the Jawdat Haydar Prize in Poetry hosted by The Banyan Tree, a new student literary journal at the American University of Beirut. All Headline News, Jewish Indy, and The Jerusalem Post of August 4 published an article commenting on the recent clash between the Lebanese and Israeli armies in southern Lebanon and the local tensions regarding the Special Tribunal for Lebanon investigating the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri. AK News of August 6 reported that in its weekly activities to honor cultural symbols in Iraq, Al-Mada Cultural House celebrated late Iraqi novelist Abdul-Malik Nouri. The paper said that Nouri joined the American University of Beirut, but later returned to Baghdad and completed his studies in law, graduating in 1944. Arabian Business of August 9 reported that computer usage by private sector businesses in the United Arab Emirates has hit 97 percent, while 82 percent currently have a company website, according to a study by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. The National Newspaper of August 15 reported that Lebanese security officials hailed the killing of a wanted Fatah al-Islam leader “as an important step in ending the threat posed by militant jihadist groups in Lebanon.” The paper quoted AUB professor of sociology Sari Hanafi as saying, “It [Fatah Al-Islam] is a very small group, with a combination of ideologies... The National of August 17 reported that Lebanese parliament approved a measure that grants Palestinian refugees in Lebanon the right to work in the country. Analysts said that under the new law, professional associations and syndicates, which regulate the employment of lawyers, doctors and other high-skilled trades, may continue to deny admission to Palestinian refugees. AUB professor of sociology Sari Hanafi said, “The issue at stake is not related to manual labor... The issue at stake is where you have professional orders. The paper said that there is a growing number of professionals in the Middle East who are seeking CFA certification.
