  • Al-Ahram Weekly Newspaper of July 1 reported that thousands of Lebanese and Palestinian demonstrators descended on Beirut demanding civil rights for Lebanon's Palestinian refugees. The paper quoted Sari Hanafi, a professor of sociology at the American University of Beirut and one of the march's organizers, highlighted the need to grant them their right by saying, "There's an awareness that the Palestinian camps' insecurity has increased because of growing poverty and crowdedness, which is a serious threat to Lebanese stability."

  • Al-Zoa, Al-Ghad, Jordan News, Ammon, All of Jo, Al-Helal News, Federation of Arabic News Agencies, and Petra of July 2 published a profile of late Jordanian politician Abdulhamid Sharaf on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his death. The paper said that he graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1959 with a BA in philosophy and received an MA in international law from the same university in 1962.

  • As-Sabah of July 3 reported that world renowned architect Zaha Hadid has been named UNESCO Artist for Peace in honor of her work promoting inter-cultural dialogue and excellence in design. The paper said that Hadid is an AUB alumna.

  • Al-Ghad of July 4 published a political editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, entitled “Lebanese Palestinians under the Spotlight.” He said, “With regard to their Palestinian refugees, the Lebanese face a moment akin to the political, legal and ethical challenges that Americans grasped when they faced and vanquished the crime of official racial discrimination in the 1950s and 60s."

  • The Peninsula Qatar of July 5 reported that the Medical Research Center at Hamad Medical Corporation has been awarded QR24.26 million in the form of Qatar National Research Programme’s  National Priorities Research Fund (NPRF) grants. The paper said that some of the eight NPRF researches will be done in collaboration with international organizations, including Infinite Biomedical Technologies, John Hopkins University, University of Zurich, American University of Beirut, University of Gloucestershire and Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

  • Zawya of July 11 reported on the Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) Apprenticeship Programme 2010 which hosted students from across the MENA region on June 26 to begin their two-week internship with the DSS team. The paper said that AUB student Wessam Najjar was among the participants and quoted him as saying, “After being a part of this programme I’m having second thoughts about my major...I’m now thinking of going into marketing because it really is amazing.”

  • Al-Safahat of July 11 published a review of Patrick Seal's recently published book Riyad Al-Solh wa al-nidal min ajl al istiqlal al-'arabi. The paper said that one of the references made to in the book is the Surya Al-Jadida newspaper that is available in microfilm at the library at the American University of Beirut.

  • Ad-Dustur of July 10, Jordan Times, Sana, Arab Bank, and Amman Stock Exchange of July 11, and Quote.com and Zawya of July 12 reported that the Arab Bank announced the appointment of Randa Sadik as its deputy chief executive office. Sadik holds an MBA degree from the American University of Beirut.

  • The National Newspaper of July 12 reported on power outages occurring in a number of Gulf countries due to high demand on electricity for cooling systems during the summer. The paper quoted Danyel Reiche, an energy policy researcher at the American University of Beirut, as saying, “The energy-intensive industries would fear for their competitive advantage and act as a powerful lobby group against any policies making their business less competitive.”

  • Zawya of July 13 reported on an international training workshop on “New WHO Child Growth Standards” that was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva in association with the WHO Collaborating Center for Education, Research, and Training at the Nutrition and Food Sciences Department at the American University of Beirut.

  • Middle East Online of July 14 published a political editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of the AUB Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, entitled “Turkey’s Superb Balancing Act.” He argued that Turkey is not moving away from the United States, NATO, and Israel in favor of strategic links with Arab-Islamic countries; rather, it is balancing its relations with all these parties as a leading regional power that enjoys international credibility.

  • Zawya of July 14 reported that the Johns Hopkins Clemenceau Medical Center (CMC) recently received the Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. The paper said that the faculties of medicine at the American University of Beirut and the Lebanese University chose CMC as a venue to train their medical students.

  • Gulf News of July 15 published an article on Lebanese diplomat and academic Charles Malek and said that he earned a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Physics in 1929 from the American University of Beirut.

  • Al-Qanat of July 16 reported that Lebanese engineer Samir Abu Samra and his wife Huda recently renewed their wedding vows at the Mar Elias church in Rabieh. The paper said that the ceremony was followed by a celebration, which was also held on the occasion of their son’s graduation from the American University of Beirut.

  • Al-Arab of July 17, Doha Insight of July 18, and Menafn of July 19 reported that the International Bank of Qatar and the Olayan School of Business at the American University of Beirut conducted  a strategic executive leadership training workshop for 24 of the bank’s senior executives and management team. The papers said that the course was led by officials from the University “and aimed at continuing the bank’s commitment to the development and training of their staff, especially in the areas of leadership, communication, performance and customer service.”

  • Zawya of July 19 reported on a three-week “Back to Roots” Summer Academy Program that gave 21 college students from the diaspora the chance to gain an intensive experience of the history, heritage, and politics of Lebanon. The paper said that the program consisted of visits to the campuses of major Lebanese universities, including the American University of Beirut and the Notre Dame University.

The paper quoted AUB professor of political studies Hilal Khashan as saying, “Hizbullah is a structured and hierarchical party... Nobody would do anything without approval from the top."
