  • Eye of Dubai and Al-Bayan of March 2 reported that the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation received a delegation from the American University of Beirut that included Patrick McGreevy, AUB’s dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Salma Oueida, associate director at AUB’s Office of Development, to discuss potential partnerships in the future.

  • The National Newspaper of March 2 published an article providing background information on the authors who made it to the short list of the International Prize for Arab Fiction this year including Rabee Jabir who studied Computer Engineering and Physics at the American University of Beirut.

  • Al-Ittihad of March 2 and Al-Ghad of March 3 reported that the Sheikh Zayed Award for the Book is holding a ceremony at the Emirates Palace in honor of the winners of the fourth round of the competition. The paper said that among the winners is author Albert Habeeb Matlaq who won the award for his recently published translation of the book Mawsoo’at Al-Hayawanat Al-Shaamila. The paper said that Habeeb had taught at the American University of Beirut.

  • Middle East Online of March 3 published a political editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut, entitled, “America and Islam,” in which he argued that "religion matters and is worth studying, but policy is far more important for promoting normal and friendly ties between Americans and the citizens of Muslim-majority countries."

  • Al-Bayan of March 3 reported on the graduation ceremony of 27 members of the Emirati Ministry of Health who attended a training course in program management of health services, held for nine months following a collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the American University of Beirut.

  • Dar al-Hayat of March 3 announced that the Lebanese Amar Press publishing house will be holding a book launch ceremony of its recently published book Tasjeelat bila ‘Unwan (Recordings without a Title) which included a contribution from Ghaliya Saadawi, a sociologist who had taught at the American University of Beirut.

  • Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat of March 3 announced that the American University in Beirut is holding a lecture on March 3 by Claude Maroun, director of the Physiotherapy Department at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, and said she will be talking about the causes of back and neck pain, and ways to prevent it.

  • Khaleej Times of March 4 published a profile of Haifa Fahoum Al-Kaylani, the founder and chairperson of the Arab International Women’s Forum. The paper said that she studied economics at the American University of Beirut.

  • The National Newspaper of March 4 reported on an art exhibit by AUB professor Walid Sadek entitled, “Place at Last” being held at the Beirut Art Center until April 9.

  • University of Sharjah of March 4 reported on an honoring ceremony held for participants of the Leaders Preparation Diploma for the staff of the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Health. The paper said that the program was executed by the American University of Beirut in collaboration with University of Sharjah. The paper also said that Special Advisor to the President of the American University of Beirut, Abdel Hamid Hallab, attended the ceremony.

  • Arabian Business of March 5 published an interview with Al Falah Ready Mix General Manager, Abdul Traboulsi in which he discusses his company's shift towards sustainable building and green manufacturing. The paper said that Traboulsi has a BE from the American University of Beirut.

  • Qatar Tribune of March 6 reported that the Doha Qatar Robotic Surgery Center, an initiative of Qatar Science and Technology Park, will formally launch its training services in April 2010. The paper said that the Center has established collaboration with international partners such as American University of Beirut and Imperial College of London.

  • The Daily News Egypt of March 9 reported that Lebanese musician Ziad Rahbani attended a press conference held to announce the econd annual Cairo Jazz Festival. The paper said that the first time Rahbani played jazz was in 1985 at a concert at the American University of Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War.

  • Middle East Online of March 10 published a political editorial by Rami Khouri, director of AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, entitled, “The Benefit of Proximity Talk,” in which he asked, “Given all these signs of obvious weakness and bias in the US position, why does Washington persist in playing the mediating role between Israel and the Palestinians?”

  • Islam Today, As-Safir, and Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat of March 10 announced that AUB Professor Ramzi Baalbaki, holder of the Jewett Chair in the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages, has been awarded the prestigious King Faisal International Prize for Arabic Language and Literature.

  • Dar Al-Hayat of March 10 and Al-Manar of March 11 reported that the American University of Beirut will celebrate the works of more than 60 world-renowned alumni authors, during a literary festival scheduled to take place at the University on March 25 and 26. The paper said that the Worldwide Alumni Association of AUB organized this festival after UNESCO named Beirut World Book Capital 2009.

  • Middle East Online of March 10 published an article by the Director of AUB’s Journalism Training Program, Magda Abu-Fadil, entitled, “Arab Print Media Expected to Grow,” in which she argued that unlike print media in the West, which may be struggling for survival, newspapers in the Arab world, which took a few hits, are thriving and expected to grow.

  • Al-Bayan of March 12 published a profile of economist Talal Abu Ghazaleh about his leading company in patent and copyright laws and services. The paper said that Abu Ghazaleh is an AUB alumnus.

  • Al-Inshaa of March 13 published an in memoriam piece of prominent Palestinian businessman, philanthropist, and the man responsible for the creation of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University in 1993, Hasib Sabbagh who passed away in January 2010. The paper said that Sabbagh, who is co-founder of the Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) is an AUB alumnus, of the year 1943.

  • The National Newspaper of March 14 published an article surveying the controversy a recently issued book entitled, The Power of Inclusive Exclusion, sparked among Israeli circles as some considered it to be “a publication that aims to strip the Israeli state of its legitimacy.” The paper also said that the book triggered discontent among colleagues of the book’s co-editor, AUB Professor Sari Hanafi, and students protesting the mention of the name of their University in the book since its other two co-editors are Israeli.

  • Dar Al-Hayat of March 13, As-Safahat of March 14, and Al-Hourriah of March 15 reported that the recent release of a book that includes articles for 16 Israeli academics and three Palestinian academics triggered a wave of discontent and protest at the American University of Beirut by some members of the faculty and student clubs, especially since one of the main editors and contributors of the book is Sari Hanafi, a professor at the University.

  • Al-Qabas of March 16 reported that AUBMC Professor Sami Azar recently commented on the threat of a breakout of diabetes in Lebanon and warned that ten percent of the Lebanese population will have diabetes in the next 15 years.

  • Al-Qabas of March 16 reported on a conference that garnered experienced diabetes specialists from across the Middle East in Abu Dhabi for the start of a two day brainstorming session known as DEVOTED to help raise awareness and reduce incidence and burden of type 2 diabetes. The paper said that AUBMC Professor Sami Azar, one of the participants, commented on the threat of a breakout of diabetes in Lebanon and stated that ten percent of the Lebanese population will have diabetes in the next 15 years.

  • Voice of America of March 11 reported that the Human Rights Watch is urging the West to engage Syria on its treatment of dissidents. The paper quoted American University of Beirut political studies Professor Hilal Khashan as saying, “Syria is ruled by a minority group, the Alawites that often feels threatened and compelled to clamp down on the population to remain in power.”

  • Scottrade of March 17 published an interview with Seyyed Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization and the former representative of Iran in the International Atomic Energy Agency. The paper said that Salehi received his bachelor’s degree from the American University of Beirut.

  • Gulf in the Media of March 18 published a political piece commenting on recent tensions over whether Lebanese officials will attend the upcoming Arab League summit in Libya. The paper quoted AUB Professor Hilal Khashan as saying, “The row worsened when Libya insulted the Lebanese by trying to deliver an invitation to the summit at the Lebanese Embassy in Damascus – Libya’s choice of mailbox implied that Syria was still the permanent address for Lebanese political affairs, despite the 2005 withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon.”

  • The National Newspaper of March 19 published an article highlighting the difficulties foreign students face when trying to speak Arabic when they travel to the Middle East because they had only been taught fusha or formal Arabic. The paper quoted David Wilmsen, a professor of Arabic at the American University of Beirut and former professor at Georgetown University, as saying, “Fusha is not used to talk about everyday events, which is why students find this high-level vocabulary right from day one.”

  • Al-Quds Al-Arabi of March 22 published an article warning that Lebanon’s water will run out by 2015 arguing that Lebanon should take proper measures to protect its water resources, or else future generations will be left without water as the population increases. The paper quoted Nadim Farajallah, professor of hydrology and water at the American University of Beirut, as saying, “Water is a sensitive political issue and it’s true that any attempt by the state to exploit its rivers in the South would meet with a reaction from Israel.”

The paper said that Ajab had undergone medical tests at the American University of Beirut Medical Center based on which a treatment for him was decided.
