Emarat Al-Yawm and Diwan Al-Arab of December 31 and Arabs 48 of January 1 announced that Dr. Anis Sayegh, a writer, editor, founder of the idea of a Palestinian encyclopedia, and founder of the Palestine Research Center, and lifetime staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, died in Amman at the age of 78. The paper said that Sayegh has a BA in political studies and history from the American University of Beirut.

Al-Waqt of January 4 reported that the Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa asked that a street in Bahrain be named after late Bahraini senior administrator and CEO Rashid Abdul Rahman Az-Zayyani. The paper said that Az-Zayani is an AUB alumnus.

Gulf News and Emirates News Agency of January 4 and Maktoob Business of January 5 reported that the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) launched the “Global Health and the UAE: Asia-Middle East Connections” conference, convening sixty of the world's leading health scientists, researchers, and clinicians in Al-Ain, UAE. The papers said that the conference is being held in collaboration with Yale University, the University of California, American University of Beirut, the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, and Unifob Global at the University of Bergen, Norway.

Egypt Today of January 5 reported on a recent Arabic version of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species, which has created a debate about including the theory of evolution in Egypt’s science curriculum. The paper quoted AUB professor of science education Dr. Saouma Boujaoude as saying, “[There are] similar misunderstandings of the scientific basis of evolutionary theory. We cannot focus on evolution without looking at the bigger picture.”

Middle East Online of January 6 published a political editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, entitled, “Wisdom in Yemen,” in which he argues that indigenous traditional societies of the developing world that are at the receiving end of “‘Western powers’ might” become “crazed, distorted,… and those traumatized societies breed more of their own criminal terrorists who attack at home and abroad.”

The National Newspaper of January 6 published an article surveying the dangers of smoking “shisha”. The paper reported that in her research among smokers in four Middle Eastern countries, Professor Rima Nakkash of the American University of Beirut found a tendency for “shisha” smoking among women and youths in particular, and quoted her as saying, “Youths start smoking water pipes because it is socially acceptable and much more permissible than cigarettes, and for women, it is a fashionable trend.”

The paper said that Dean Iman Nuwayhid, of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut, presented his research and his findings to date in a lecture entitled, "Climate Change Challenges to Health in Arab Countries,” and spoke of the joint efforts of the Issam Fares Institute and Faculty of Health Sciences at AUB to promote a regional research and policy agenda on climate change.

Amman Times of January 7 reported on a recent visit by Lebanese PM Saad Hariri to Jordan where he met with Jordanian King Abdullah. The paper said that there are 750 Jordanian students studying at universities in Lebanon including the American University of Beirut.

The Media Line of January 7 reported on Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s recent criticism of Qatari journalists for showing bias in favor of Hamas. The paper quoted Nabil Dajani, a professor of media studies at the American University of Beirut, as saying, “Cutting off life support for Palestinians in the Hamas areas is unacceptable and you cannot justify the way the people in Gaza are being treated. This makes people sympathize with Hamas, whether they are for Hamas or not.”

Al-Ittihad of January 8 published an article surveying the dangers of smoking shisha. The paper quoted AUB Professor Rima Nakkash of the American University of Beirut as saying that the dangers of smoking shisha are 48 times worse than smoking cigarettes.

Araam News, Peyamner News Agency, Kuwait Annahar Newspaper, and Middle East Online of January 10 reported on Lebanon’s unseasonably warm winter and subsequent lack of a skiing season this year. The papers quoted AUB professor of land and water resources Nadim Farajallah as saying, "The short winter season could also negatively impact agriculture this summer as groundwater levels are dropping, making irrigation difficult.”

Al-Rai of January 12 published the results of a study surveying the causes behind the success of the National Bank of Kuwait. The paper said that the study traces this success to the bank’s recent collaboration with universities, including the American University of Beirut, and institutes that provide it with expertise and graduates.

Al-Jazeera of January 14 reported on the phenomenon of reverse brain drain in Lebanon whereby tens of thousands of Lebanese are returning to Lebanon after having left their jobs or having been laid off. The paper quoted Jenny Zailah, a senior economics student at the American University of Beirut as saying, "There are no more places for fresh graduates. We're turning and turning, and we don't know where to go.”
