- Al-Khiyam of November 10 listed brief biographies of the members of the new national unity government recently announced by Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri. The papers said the among the new ministers who are American University of Beirut graduates are: Minister of Economy and Commerce Muhammad Safadi, who received a BBA from AUB in 1968; Minister of Information Tarek Mitri who received a BA in Philosophy from AUB; Minister of Energy Jubran Bassil who has a ME from AUB in 1993; Minister of Industry Ibrahim Dahdahian who received a BE from AUB in 1961; Minister of Finance Raya Muhammad Ali Al Haffar who earned a BBA from AUB in 1987; and Minister of Health Mohamed Jawad Khalifeh who completed his residency in general surgery at the American University of Beirut Medical Center in 1990, and is professor at the AUB Faculty of Medicine. - Eye of Dubai of November 10 reported that the director of AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs Rami Khouri participated in a panel discussion on material struggles faced by young people in the Middle East. The paper said that the discussion was part of a launch of a book entitled, “Generation in Waiting: The Unfulfilled Promise of Young People in the Middle East,” which is a result of a joint venture of the Wolfensohn Center for Development and the Dubai School of Government. - Dubai Chronicle and Al-Waqt of November 10 carried the announcement by Société Génerale (SG) Private Banking group that, in order to reinforce its presence in the Middle East, it has appointed two new senior managers including Eric Lorentz as Managing Director and Global Market Manager for Arab High and Ultra-High Net Worth clients. The papers said that Lorentz, who is a graduate of University of California Los Angeles and the American University of Beirut, will be based in the United Arab Emirates to lead and coordinate SG Private Banking’s worldwide marketing activities for Arab clients of its offices in Europe and the Middle East. - Arab Health of November 11 reported on the first conference held by the Lebanese Society of Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disorders (OSTEOS) during which it announced its new osteoporosis prevention and treatment program and fracture risk calculator called FRAX Lebanon. The paper said that FRAX came to Lebanon as a result of the efforts of American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) doctor and president of OSTEOS Ghada Hajj Fuleihan and the Lebanese Ministry of Health, and that this facility can be accessed at AUBMC. - Al-Waqt of November 12 published a historical piece featuring the first pharmacy in Bahrain, which opened in 1910 by pharmacist Ali Yatim. The paper said that Yatim, who studied pharmacy in India, was the first certified pharmacist to work in Bahrain and contended a claim done by a history book entitled, “Lamahat min Madi Al Bahrain” (Glimpses of Bahrain’s Past) that Rasul Al-Jayshi, who graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1958, is the first certified Bahraini pharmacist. - Avokato of November 15 announced that the Lebanese Criminal Court Judge formally acquitted US journalist Ernest Orso Libraries of charges of forging identification documents. The paper said that the journalist was caught at the American University of Beirut on January 28 last year for not possessing the right ID documents. - The National of November 17 reported on the recent efforts done by the Emirati Ministry of Health to make up for the shortage of female nurses in the United Arab Emirates by proposing a program that consolidates existing diploma degrees in the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) into a single bachelor’s program. - The Jordan Times, Amman Net, Jordan News Agency-Petra, Al-Ghad, and the Federation of Arabic News Agencies of November 22 reported on the recent Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) Conference during which American University of Beirut professor of communications Nabil Dajani gave the closing remarks. The papers said that Dajani argued that media institutions would benefit if they invest more money into investigative journalism since it tackles “crucial issues” that can translate into increased revenues for publications as well as television and radio networks. - Aljazeera.net, Al-Quds, and Al-Bawaba of November 23 carried the statement by the British embassy in Lebanon confirming through DNA testing the identity of the body of British reporter Elik Collet, which has been missing for more than two decades and discovered recently in the southern Lebanese village of ‘Aita Al-Fukhar. The papers said that the body of Collet was transported to the American University of Beirut Medical Center after it was uncovered. Aram News of November 25 reported on a new youth movement in Lebanon called Sarkha which advocates the eradication of sectarian alliances that are pervasive among student parties at universities in Lebanon. The paper said that Sarkha was founded at the Lebanese American University and is seeing the light at the American University of Beirut.

JO of November 25 published an article featuring a new music project in Amman called the Gas Car project, which provides an alternative tune for music played by Jordan’s gas cars. The paper said that the Gas Car project is partly run by Samah Hijjawi who studied at the American University of Beirut.

AME Info of November 29 published an article featuring the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs offered at the American University of Beirut’s Hariri School of Nursing. The paper quoted Professor Huda Abou-Saad-Huijer, the director of the nursing school at AUB, as saying, “Not many people know that nursing graduates are snapped up as soon as they finish their degrees and that they are offered above-average salaries.”

Arabic Economic and Financial News of November 29 published an article featuring the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs offered at the American University of Beirut’s Hariri School of Nursing. The paper quoted Professor Huda Abou-Saad-Huijer, the director of the nursing school at AUB as saying, “Not many people know that nursing graduates are snapped up as soon as they finish their degrees and that they are offered above-average salaries.”

Arabic Economic and Financial News of November 29 reported that researchers at the American University of Beirut’s Department of Health Behavior and Education announced, at a conference held at Gefinor Rotana Hotel, the results of a study entitled, “Results of the Qualitative Study Evaluating the Implementation of Smoke Free Policies in Public Places in Lebanon,” on the topic of the partial success of the smoking ban campaigns at restaurants and bars and other public spaces in Lebanon. The paper said that AUB Faculty of Health Sciences professors Rima Nakkash, Joanna Khalil, Rima Afifi, and Monique Shaaya contributed to the study.

Al-Bayan of November 30 reported on the Arab Leadership Organization which has helped more than 7000 Arab youth advance and succeed in their careers. The paper said that a few American University of Beirut alumni have undergone their training in Europe thanks to an exchange program facilitated by the organization.

Middle East Online of November 30 published an editorial by Rami Khouri, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut, entitled, “From Biblical Principles to Poker,” in which he argues that in order to achieve peace in the Middle East, the Arabs should “call and raise the Israeli bet, galvanize our peace proposal and reinvigorate Arab diplomacy, challenge the Israelis to negotiate seriously in Geneva on the basis of existing proposals and already negotiated principles that offer both sides their legitimate national rights, and nudge the Americans to be fair and decisive mediators.”

AME Info and UAE Today of November 30 reported on a lecture given by Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Wollongong Dubai Muhammad Watfa on his new book entitled Coverage Strategies in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Rigorous Analysis. The papers said that Watfa has a BS in computer science from the American University of Beirut.

Al-Wasat of November 30 published a profile of new Lebanese Minister of Finance Raya Al Haffar. The paper said that Al-Haffar received a BBA from the American University of Beirut in 1987.
