Summary of Recommendations

    As a result of the discussion that took place during the Seminar on Academic Advising, Jan.14, �05, recommendations ensued. Following is a summary of these recommendations:

    1. A reward system should be devised to reward Academic Advisors in much the same way as the Teaching Excellence Award;
    2. The academic advising load allotted to full time faculty members should be revised;
    3. Sophomore academic advising should be given utmost importance as it sets the stage for academic advising in the coming years;
    4. Two types of advising should be observed: mechanical/registration advising (prescriptive) along with academic advising (developmental advising);
    5. Centralized academic advising should be considered where each Faculty would establish an office assigned for academic advising;
    6. Technological implementations in academic advising should assist not impede academic advising, for example, accurate advisee lists, section capacity, etc.;
    7. Academic advising should be considered as part of the duties of a full time faculty member;
    8.  An evaluation system of the advising process should be developed in much the same way as ICE;
    9. Information about support services at AUB should be disseminated to academic advisors;
    10. Group advising as well as individual advising should be considered when an advisor has a large number of advisees;
    11. Awareness of Lebanese laws in the Ministry of Education and AUB rules should be disseminated to academic advisors;
    12. Student awareness about AUB academic advising system should be raised during orientation sessions and included in their letters of acceptance;
    13. Most effective academic advising models should be looked into, adopted or modified to fit Faculty academic advising needs;
    14. Academic advising responsibilities for new faculty could be deferred until after they receive training in academic advising.
