Advising Guide 2006-07
Dear Colleagues,
Academic advising is one area where AUB should excel. Many faculty members and departments already work very hard during advising periods and provide high quality advice to our students. What one hears from students, however, is that faculty performance in this area is, despite many excellent efforts, somewhat uneven. The AUB administration wants to improve student satisfaction with advising, to recognize instances of success, and to understand the reasons why sometimes performance is less than excellent. For this reason, academic advising will be an area of focus for the office of the Provost in the coming months.
Academic advising is a complex process. It is not an area where one may generalize or improve by fiat. Rather, the office of the Provost will be working closely with all involved, deans, departmental chairs, faculty members, and students to understand better what exactly the situation is and, based on such communication, to provide the necessary support to ensure that AUB provides students with high quality advising during their studies here.
This page is a first step toward supporting faculty in their advising. Drs. BouJaoude and BouZeineddine have extracted from the university catalogue some of the basic information necessary for advising. This handbook is only a beginning, however. As we understand better the information what faculty and students need, we will supplement and expand the handbook.
The first page consists of a Recommended Statement of Values and a summary of the advisers role. We welcome reactions to and suggestions concerning both of these sections.
I wish to thank Drs. BouJaoude and BouZeineddine for their effort in creating this page. I hope that you find the information in it useful, and I look forward to working with all concerned to foster an excellent environment for academic advising at AUB.
Waddah Nasr, Acting Director of Center
Dear Fellow Academic Advisers,
We put in your hands a revised version of the Academic Advising Guide which, we hope, will be of assistance to you during your advising task. There are new sections in this years Academic Advising Guide: A Recommended Statement of Values, advisers role, interest inventories, students role, frequently asked questions, useful websites for academic advisers, petitions and other forms, and an index. The Academic Advising Guide also contains general information, lists of academic advisers and, finally, University and Faculty rules and regulations as they appear in the 2005-06 University Catalogue. As such, this Guide is meant to highlight information which we, as academic advisers, and our students need to know prior to and throughout the advising period. However, the AUB Catalogue will always be the best detailed reference for our students and us.
Thank you for your time, and again we hope that the Academic Advising Guide will be helpful to you.
