The Women’s Auxiliary at the AUB Medical Center, or the ‘ladies in pink,’ is an exceptional group commited to a high and worthy cause. The academic year 2001-2002 saw no exception to their hard work and devotion, for it carried many impressive numbers, activities, and above all, a comforting promise of continued and dedicated social work.
The total sum donated to the Social Service Fund amounted to LL 96,000,000 in addition to LL 6,000,000 presented as help for patients at the AUBMC. The Women’s Auxiliary also contributed gifts, worth over $11,000 to the Medical Center, namely equipment for the Department of Pediatrics and five television sets for different AUB Hospital departments.
The main fundraising activity of the Women’s Auxiliary was a luncheon at the Bristol Hotel, sponsored by Mrs. Wadad Sabbagh Khoury. Proceeds of this luncheon went into the Nabila Firzli Emergency Fund, which contributed over LL 20,000,000 to emergency cases at the AUB Hospital. Dr. Nadim Cortas, Vice President and Dean of the Medical School, and Mr. John Rhoder, Director of the Hospital, were present at this fundraiser.
The Women’s Auxiliary finished off a successful year by holding their annual Toy Tea Party in the gardens of Marquand House on June 27, 2002. The program included a fashion show by Miss Samia Saab, which highlighted modern adaptation of our Lebanese heritage in current fashion styles. Mrs. Firzli and Dr. Salwa Makarem then offered awards to eight distinguished nursing graduates. In conclusion, Mr. Rhoder thanked all the ladies in pink for their immense contributions to AUB and its Hospital.
In addition to great financial assistance, the Women’s Auxiliary also gave special effort to cultural activities. Several engaging lectures were presented by prominent Lebanese public figures, the earliest of which was a talk on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in October. MP Nayla Mouawad spoke on the occasion of the International Year of the Child at Issam Fares Hall in February. His Excellency Dr. Riad Tabbara also gave a lecture on migration and unemployment in Lebanon. In addition, a trip to Amchit was organized to visit the old historical houses in the area in April. |
