The Society of the Friends of the AUB Museum organized an extraordinary number of activities last year – as they do every year. In addition to a regular series of lectures, there were also trips to sites in Lebanon and abroad, museum exhibits, and the always popular Children’s Program. Highlights of this year’s lectures included Dr. Francoise Briquel Chatonnet from the CNRS- Paris speaking on “The Origins of Oriental Churches” in October 2007; a presentation by Asaad Seif, coordinator of archaeological excavations at the Directorate General of Antiquities (DGA) on “New Archaeological Discoveries in Beirut”; Anne-Marie Afeiche’s remarks on “The Steles of Nahr el Kalb from the First Millennium BC to the Second Millennium AD”; Dr. Barbara Porter, Director of ACOR – Amman spoke about “The Byzantine World of Petra”; and M. Julien Aliquot’s address on “les Ituréens: Un peuple du Liban.” Amulets and Talismans was the theme of both the Christmas exhibit and the Children’s Program in December. In addition to a chance to check out the museum’s collection of decorative objects, the participants had the opportunity to listen to an overview by Nevine Mattar, from the University of Balamand and the Lebanese American University. This year’s Children’s Program also included activities focused on past and present “wonders of the world” and Lebanese mud brick houses. The Society organized both a trip to Jurd Jbeil in October 2007 and a trip to “the Heart of Russia” in June 2008. Hundreds of museum fans who gathered on June 25 to celebrate International Museum Day were treated to a viewing of the documentary film “The Phoenicians”. A reception with oriental music, and a buffet provided by “Souk el Tayeb” highlighted the event. | | |
