The Women’s Auxiliary enjoyed another successful year in 2007-08. During the annual Toy Tea Party that took place at Marquand House on June 12, 2008, the Women’s Auxiliary celebrated the hard work and dedication of its volunteers who spent countless hours serving at the Coffee Shop, the Bargain Box, the Hospital, the Gift Shop, and as members of the Social Committee. Thanks to their efforts, the Women’s Auxiliary contributed $138,767 to the AUBMC as follows: $48,000 from the Coffee Shop to the Social Services Department to assist adult patients; $32,000 from the Bargain Box to the Social Services Department to help pediatric patients; $40,000 to the Nabila Firzli Emergency Fund; $6,667 to provide medications for needy patients; $10,000 to fund scholarships for two student nurses; and $2,100 for awards to student nurses and hospital nurses. As part of its regular program of cultural activities, the Women’s Auxiliary held two lectures that featured Dr. Ala’ Sharara who addressed the topic of colon cancer and former Minister of Health Dr. Karam Karam, whose lecture entitled “Feminine Forever” focused on the important concept of femininity in a woman’s life cycle. Both lectures were well attended. In addition, the Women’s Auxiliary held an avant premier of the movie “Atonement” on February 5, 2008. At the Christmas Luncheon on December 15, 2007, members of the Women’s Auxiliary honored former president Mrs. Leila Iliya for her more than 20 years of service and selfless dedication. Mrs. Iliya, who passed away on July 31, 2008, will long be remembered by the members of the Women’s Auxiliary. | | |
