The Importance of Financial Aid

In recent years, we have steadily increased our financial aid budget and taken steps to ensure that our financial aid programs are fair and competitive.  These efforts support our commitment to achieve a dynamic and diverse student body. This is what defines the AUB experience that our students enjoy and our alumni cherish.

Being able to offer more scholarships to qualified young men and women supports AUB’s mission to serve the peoples of the Middle East and beyond.

There are thousands of men and women on campus today like Jamil, Rachelle, Haig, Wisam, Nada, Mona and who rely on financial aid.

The Board of Trustees has significantly increased AUB’s financial aid budget in recent years from $2.6 million in 2001-02 to $17.1 million in 2011-12 when AUB provided financial assistance to more than 3,000 students.  The University’s commitment to offer ever greater numbers of qualified men and women with the opportunity to attend AUB has benefited enormously from the support of its alumni and friends.  Since 2009, AUB has raised more than $20.8 million in new gifts and pledges specifically for financial aid.  In addition, five generous donors came forward with a $5 million matching grant bringing the total amount raised for financial aid between December 2009 and September 2012 to $25.8 million.

Although we are grateful and proud of what we have accomplished, there are still young men and women who do not receive the assistance they need to attend AUB.  Our commitment to them and to the region that we serve is ongoing.  We invite you to support our mission to serve the peoples of the Middle East and beyond by making a gift to AUB’s scholarship program.

There are many ways to give.  You can make a secure online donation, mail a check payable to AUB and send to the New York or Beirut Office of Advancement, wire funds, contribute with stocks and securities, or make a pledge.

 Reinvigorating Liberal Arts Education:

“This is a university steeped in the idea that a broad liberal arts training forms the essence of responsible citizenship.  Education is not a service we contract with our students, one that is of practical use to them only after they get their degree and then go on to greater accomplishment.  Our accountability is greater than that.  Rather, we teach our students how to learn; we lead them down the paths of different methodologies, of different problems of inquiry.  We invite them to participate in a journey of self-discovery that can last for an entire lifetime.”
-AUB President Peter Dorman, Opening Ceremony, October 6, 2008

Promoting Interdisciplinary Research Relevant to the Region:

At AUB, we recognize that today’s most pressing problems demand that scholars from different disciplines come together to integrate data, methodologies, perspectives, and concepts.  A number of AUB professors from throughout the University are already collaborating informally and as members of organized research groups or teams on closely related subject areas such as the environment and energy.  These collaborations enrich the educational experience that our students enjoy and benefit the communities in which we live and work.

Providing Medicine and Health Expertise and Services to Lebanon and the Region:

Since 1867, AUB has provided first class education in medicine and biomedical research while delivering quality and excellence in patient care.  Accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCIA) on hospital accreditation, the AUB Medical Center (AUBMC) is the leading tertiary and quaternary care referral medical center for the Middle East region.

In April 2011, AUBMC announced a comprehensive plan for future growth detailing its vision to be the leading academic medical center in Lebanon and the region by delivering excellence in patient-centered care, outstanding education, and innovative research.  In addition to a new 600-bed medical complex that will include both adult and pediatric hospitals, AUBMC will also establish specialized centers of excellence in a number of areas including oncology, neuroscience, and heart and vascular disease.

The Medical Center is also partnering with other medical institutions in the region and around the world to increase patient access and strengthen the delivery of health care.  These efforts will ensure that AUB will be able to continue to serve the peoples of Lebanon and the region as it has done for almost 150 years.
