AGSC graduates manage leading MENA companies in agricultural consulting, landscape, marketing of irrigation systems, seeds fertilizer, pesticide and hold important positions in the MENA public sector and international development agencies.

Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences

The Animal and Veterinary Sciences Department (AVSC), trains students in pathophysiology, animal nutrition and production, hematology, veterinary microbiology, pathology, and the molecular biology of animal pathogens. Since its establishment in the mid 1950s, AVSC has played an important role in the poultry, livestock, and dairy sectors in the region in the following areas:

  • Determining proper animal nutrient requirements.
  • Introducing new feed supplements.
  • Improving the genetic make-up of dairy herds and sheep.
  • Developing animal vaccines and diagnostics.
  • Pioneering various holistic approaches for the control of prevalent animal diseases.

At the undergraduate level, AVSC awards a BS in Veterinary Science with course topics including veterinary immunology and microbiology, anatomy, pathology, clinical diagnostics, and veterinary medicine. It also offers core and elective courses as part of the BS program in Agriculture on topics such as animal nutrition, animal physiology, breeding, and agricultural microbiology.  The department also offers graduate programs in animal science and poultry science.

AVSC graduates are recruited in the MENA region to manage poultry and large livestock farms, feed mills, hatcheries, and businesses related to veterinary medicine, such as vaccines, diagnostics, immune-enhancers, and feed supplements.

Department of Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management

The Department of Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management (LDEM) is the first of its kind in the MENA region, and brings together professors and researchers from various disciplines across the broad spectrum of landscape ecology, landscape design, ecosystem and natural resources management, and environmental sciences. The essence of the Department lies in it being interdisciplinary, in teaching and in research with applications in the Middle East region. To that end, the Department builds on the strong linkages established with other academic units within and outside FAFS.

The LDEM Department offers a 4 years undergraduate program and awards a BS in Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management and a Diploma of Ingenieur Agricole. The Department’s teaching agenda promotes holistic view of landscape and environment with applied scientific knowledge and creative, flexible skills for the design and sustainable management of open spaces, natural and cultural resources and landscapes. In addition to regular courses and studios, the department engages students in experiential learning, seminars, internships, projects, consultancies, discussion sessions, exposure to private and public sector, exposure to visiting international professionals and academics. Course topics include landscape history, landscape design, ecological landscape design, landscape horticulture, as well as environmental and sustainable development.

The Department also offers a 2 years interfaculty graduate program in ecosystem management. Since 2007, the LDEM Department has challenged students to be responsible, creative designers and to develop innovative, site-appropriate solutions that enhance aesthetics and value.

Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences

The Nutrition and Food Sciences (NFSC) Department is a leader in nutritional research and education in Lebanon and the region. It fosters a multidisciplinary approach to basic, clinical, and translational research with an emphasis on food consumption practices, nutritional assessment, food safety, quality of traditional foods, diet-related non-communicable diseases, and associated genetic traits underlying nutrition and obesity-related health problems. The Department has a distinguished history in accomplishments where work in the area of nutrition at AUB has been ongoing since the establishment of FAFS. From its early days, in the 1960’s, the NFSC Department had focused on enhancing people’s nutritional well-being and health by addressing nutritional problems in the community. It also sponsors a dietetic internship at the internationally accredited AUB Medical Center. In 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) in recognition of excellence designated the department as a collaborating center for research, training, and outreach in nutrition and food science. In 2009, it housed the first Associated Research Unit for Undernutrition and Obesity in Lebanon under the support of the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research (LNCSR).

The Department hosted a number of internationally renowned scientists as visiting professors and lecturers since its establishment. It has also established cooperation with international Universities from France and Britain where many PhD students registered in France and Britain partially conducted their research at AUB and with NFSC members of faculty serving on their supervisory committees.

At the undergraduate level, NFSC awards a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics. Courses are offered on topics such as human nutrition, therapeutic nutrition, community nutrition, and nutritional assessment. Additionally, the department is seeking accreditation by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) for its new undergraduate Coordinated Program in Nutrition & Dietetics which will be launched in 2009-2010.

The department also awards a BS in Food Science and Management. Courses are offered on topics such as food chemistry and analysis, food microbiology, food processing, food quality and service management, and food engineering.
