The Department of Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management (LDEM) is the first of its kind in the MENA region, and brings together professors and researchers from various disciplines across the broad spectrum of landscape ecology, landscape design, ecosystem and natural resources management, and environmental sciences. The essence of the Department lies in it being interdisciplinary, in teaching and in research with applications in the Middle East region. To that end, the Department builds on the strong linkages established with other academic units within and outside FAFS.
The LDEM Department offers a 4 years undergraduate program and awards a BS in Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management and a Diploma of Ingenieur Agricole. The Department’s teaching agenda promotes holistic view of landscape and environment with applied scientific knowledge and creative, flexible skills for the design and sustainable management of open spaces, natural and cultural resources and landscapes. In addition to regular courses and studios, the department engages students in experiential learning, seminars, internships, projects, consultancies, discussion sessions, exposure to private and public sector, exposure to visiting international professionals and academics. Course topics include landscape history, landscape design, ecological landscape design, landscape horticulture, as well as environmental and sustainable development.
The Department also offers a 2 years interfaculty graduate program in ecosystem management. Since 2007, the LDEM Department has challenged students to be responsible, creative designers and to develop innovative, site-appropriate solutions that enhance aesthetics and value.
