Department of Agricultural Sciences

  • Growing Sustainability, Integrated Village Development Project: El Quaraaoun Pilot Village.  Supported by Mercy Corps. 
  • Sustainable Improvement of Marginal Lands in Lebanon.  Supported by IDRC.
  • Darwin Project in Coastal Vegetation Survey and Conservation in Lebanon.  Supported by the Kew Royal Botanical Gardens.

 

 

Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences

  • Trained farmers on livestock and animal husbandry under Sustainable Forage Development Program.  Supported by USAID.
  • Evaluated the ingredients of Epican Forte on avian influenza.  Supported by the Dr. Rath Research Institute in California.
  • Surveyed Influenza viruses in the Lebanese Animal Sector. Supported by the USA reference center for Zoonoses, St. Jude Children Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.
  • Evaluated new Antimirobials to treat economic diseases in poultry. Supported by Bedson Co., Argentina.
  • Established 100 free range poultry farms and 15 Sanaan goat farms.  Supported by the World Rehabilitation Fund.

 

 

Department of Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management

In addition to promoting the profession, sustainability and inter-disciplinarity, the service agenda of the Department includes providing professional consultancies as regional/local experts and community services in the following: planning and implementation of community-based initiative in landscape and livelihood, design and construction of school and learning environments, design and implementation of public parks, post conflict assessments, assessments and strategies for biodiversity conservation and the management of protected areas, and wet utility infrastructure designs for public and private sector.

 

 

Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences

  • Wild Edible Plants: Promoting dietary diversity in Lebanon, to increase dietary diversity for the rural and urban poor.  Supported by IDRC.
  • Established the Lebanese Association for Nutrition and Food Sciences (LANFS) a non-governmental non-profit organization that counts more than 450 dietitians working in Lebanon and the Middle East region. It is a valued and credible reference for scientifically based nutrition and food science information in Lebanon with a primary goal to promote good health and disease prevention. Adhering body of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS). 

                            

 

Environment and Sustainable Development Unit 

In 2009, ESDU successfully achieved the dissemination of the Communication for Development concept supported by FAO. In addition, ESDU joined another 2 years- project with RUAF aiming at contributing to the recognition and support of Urban Agriculture to alleviate poverty, enhance food security and improve the environment. This project entitled “From Seed to Table” is taking place in Amman-Jordan and Sana’a-Yemen using a value chain approach. ESDU as a regional unit is also planning a 3-years action research proposal with the support of IDRC, aiming at Mainstreaming Evaluation Theory and Practice in the MENA region by emphasizing on Outcome Mapping as an entry point.
